Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

J. K. Rowling and her book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone are both really popular. This is the most unique book yet. It has all kinds of wizarding stuff and weird yet wonderful animals. The best thing about it though is the game called Quidditch. Quiditch is the best because it would be great to have it in real life. This book has all sorts of twists and turns which makes it the best. I recommend it for all ages.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Rivals The Hobbit

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

J.K. Rowling has created a magical world with such believable details that the reader is immediately transported. I haven't felt this way about a book since I read The Hobbit as a child. Everything from the character's names to "Quidditch", the game played by Harry at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is perfectly believable in the context of the book. I bought the book as a Christmas gift for my nine year old daughter and read it myself in one sitting. My daugher read it in two days and it is now making its way through our whole extended family and we have friends eagerly awaiting their turn to read it. We couldn't wait for the sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Autobiography of a Fat Bride : True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood - book cover picture

Laurie Notaro is a comic genius! So many laugh (or snort) out-loud moments are in this book. I think many of her readers see so much of themselves in her stories, but her true gift is in the storytelling. We've all had home-improvement store breakdowns, dealings with nutty moms, oafish but well-meaning husbands and "wardrobe malfunctions", but her hilarious spin on the tales make this a worthy read. I think I may even make my husband sit down and read this; after he takes down the Christmas tree and puts up the Halloween decorations.

Mr. Levin you're the bomb!

Book title: The Stepford Wives
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Stepford Wives - book cover picture

Ira Levin's stories are a pleasure to read. Stepford Wives has a fantastic premise (already coverd in other reviews), and delivers a brilliant story with thought-provoking ideas at its heart.

To conform or not to conform will ALWAYS be something Americans wrestle with (can't speak for other cultures). But in America, where we value liberty and individuality, there is also an insidious pressure to conform in some manner to some group--and those who don't will have to suffer consequences to be sure. That's why the premise of Stepford Wives will always be relevant.

As for the writing, Mr. Levin's prose are as clear and clean and knife-sharp as Scott Fitzgerald. Check it out for heaven's sake!

Life changing experience

Atlas Shrugged : 35th Anniversary Edition - book cover picture

I'm not sure what has had a bigger impact in my life: my parents putting me through college or my mother introducing me to this work when I was 25yrs old. The beauty of this novel is its mere simplicity and that unlike other works on philosophy (which state only theory), Atlas is thoery and practice. The story, the actions of the vast amount of characters, is more than believable: it is a mirror image of yesterday and today's culture. Atlas proves that Objectivism is the only logical and moral philosophy for man to survive on earth.

Looking In At Himself (Jim Carroll's amazing!)

Forced Entries : The Downtown Diaries: 1971-1973 - book cover picture

This is not a book of records, jam-packed with the daily happenings and sometime wondering why. No, it's not The Basketball Diaries, and Jim Carroll's no longer a basketball star, a cool street kid just starting to try Heroin and to expereince the lows of street life. Here, he's a star on the New York art scene, having dealt w/his addiction for quite some time now. He leave nyc, then comes back, all the while writing it down and looking for the answer to why/how/etc. inside himself. It doesn't have the energy and excitement of The Basketball Diaries, and it may leave you wondering what happened, but it's the raw and naked truth that shine. One of the best books ever written, you have to read it to appreciate its beauty!

I first read this book when I was 14, having borrowed it from the school library. I read it twice more in the following year. It affected me deeply and since then it has quite often crossed my mind to find the book again and re-read it. How surprised and happy I am after idly checking this website to see if that title would come up! I plan on ordering the book so I may savour every word of it all over again!

A must-read for anyone who adores food and restaurants

Book title: Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly - book cover picture

This is a fantastic story, blending blunt, often hilarious narrative with powerful insights into the core of the restaurant business, with some touching and bang-on insights on character. We learn about how the restaurant industry really works (which is great for those of us who eat in them frequently), and the invisible characters behind the kitchen doors come to life most vividly. For those of us who've done some time in restaurant kitchens, it's a great revisitation; for those who haven't, it's quite instructive. Regardless, the book remains thoroughly riveting and enjoyable from beginning to end, and, with all it's threads back to the human condition, Kitchen Confidential should be widely appealing.Bourdain comes through as honest and learned, and his story never fails to engage, amaze, and satisfy. One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long while.

Cat's Eye - book cover picture

I loved the story it gave a sincere and tantalizing story of girl growing up. I walked from it believing that I understood myself and the world a little bit better. The other reviews seemed to be disturbed that it wasn't a happy book? It was a real book! It was hard to think of it as fiction. The discriptions of what Elaine saw and painted and felt, had me wanting to paint and look and feel my own life. (I wish I could write a better review but I read the book over a year ago and picked it up again yesterday reading through it and it inspired to write this. The book was capturing me just looking through it.)

The missing ingredient for true artificial intelligence

Book title: Affective Computing
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Affective Computing - book cover picture

A fascinating book with many implications for the fields of artifical intelligence and human-computer interaction. Picard provides a rich background on modern research in emotion and puts forth compelling arguments for the need to incorporate affective abilities in computers as, perhaps, the only way to allow them to respond intelligently to their environment and make rational decisions. An entertaining and mind-opening read.
