Great read and I learned a lot about the war in Russia

War of the Rats - book cover picture

I knew about Nazism, but I had never really considered the enormity of the war as fought between the Germans and Russians. Their conflict was exhausting, raking, bitter and terrible. Though the novel was almost too painful to read at times, I endured to the end of War Of The Rats because it is the telling of a tale that happened. Thank goodness for the love story and the personal touches in the novel which Robbins handled so well. I also felt keenly what a cold and inhospitable landscape Stalingrad must have been. At some points I felt like I was personaly having to trudge through it myself. I recommend War Of The Rats to anyone with a yen for historical fiction. This is it, of the highest caliber.

Demon in My View (Laurel-Leaf Books) - book cover picture

This is a great book that is in a way a sequel to Atwater-Rhodes's first novel. Atwater-Rhodes renames her first novel Tiger, Tiger, and uses a teenage girl named Jessica to portray herself. Jessica is a seventeen year old girl who writes popular vampire novels under the pen name Ash Night. She thinks that what she writes is fiction, but when she meets Alex, who has an uncanny resemblence to the powerful vampire, Aubrey (a character that readers will recognize from the first book) she begins to realize that what she wrote was not at all fiction. This is a very suspensuful novel that readers will enjoy even more after reading her first book, In The Forests of the Night. I think that every teen would like it, especially if they aqre the Gothic type.

An Excellent Introduction

Gurdjieff: An Approach to His Ideas (Arkana S.) - book cover picture

Michel Waldberg writes clearly and gives a good picture of Gurdjieff's ideas. The main contents of his book are direct quotations from Beelzebub's Tales and In Search of the Miraculous, which gives an authentic impression. But the books is not only quotations it is also full of acute observations and thoughts on the teaching. Consider the following little quotation:"It is as children that we must read Meetings with Remarkable Men' - as children capable of wonder, of following where the storyteller leads, and also of identifying with the marvellous living figures whom we see. Anybody who came to this book in search of new revelations, or new methods of achieving the consciousness without which it remains useless to utter the word freedom, would be quickly disenchanted."

Selected Poetry (Oxford World's Classics (Paperback)) - book cover picture

Gerard Manley Hopkins is the greatest English poet to ever put pen to paper, bar none. Yes, even better than Shakespeare. Every student of English lit should read Hopkins. Hopkins writes from a profound love and awe of God and the beauty of His creations, but also from a deep despair resulting from chronic depression. His mastery of classical English combined with his magic use of sounds and word inventions is sheer genius. Read him.

Mind Game - book cover picture

I absolutely loved this book. It is a great sequeal to Shadow Game but can stand alone as a great read. I have enjoyed Christine Feehan's Dark series and this is a nice well thought out change. There is wonderful chemistry between the two main characters of Dahlia and Nicolas. I liked the way the story took place in a somewhat contained time frame and didn't drag on or go off on tangents. I would highly recommend this book...it is a keeper.

Red Dragon - book cover picture

When Will Graham sets out to find the terrifying killer in this novel, no one could predict the rather sinister outcome. In a twisting, spiralling plot which captivates the reader, Harris subtly gives us a mere glimpse of Dr Hannibal Lector. One must remember that such a book is not dominated by Lector. The reader must (somehow) try and focus on the main plot- this proves almightly hard when the creation of such a character as Lector is inspired. I strongly advise, that if one has read Harris' other novels, there absolutely no reason not to read this. A real treat.

Small Sacrifices: A True Story of Passion and Murder - book cover picture

The book I just recently read is Small Sacrifices by Ann Rule. The book was an excellent book. It was the kind of book that made you want to keep turning pages. This book is about a mother that goes through a tragic event when her three children were shot. The book goes into detail on what went on the night of the shooting and how the cops got the answers they were looking for. The main plot was easy to figure out once you got started into the book. The mother of this story plays an incredible unbelievable part in the story. The ending is unbelievable and makes the whole book well worth reading. I strongly advise anyone that likes Ann Rule or those types of books to read this one.

A Great book by Wendy Markham

Slightly Settled (Red Dress Ink) - book cover picture

"Slightly Settled" is the follow-up to Wendy Markahm's first Red Dress ink book "Slightly Single." This is a really great book. This books picks-up three months after the first book as Tracey is still looking for love in the big city. As usual, Ms. Markham delivers sassy characters, who each should get their own book. Quick dialogue that holds the readers interest and makes them wanting for more.
This is a great book for any fan of "Chick-lit" and I hope in the future we get more of both Tracey and Wendy Markham.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right - book cover picture

Mr. Franken has the truth and actually backs it up with extensive research. Unlike Coultor or O'Reilly he uses facts to prove what we as Americans for long have been lied to about. People who refuse to look as history as a valuable learning tool (elite right) will make the same mistakes over and over. Al Franken mirrors the frustration of many Americans who follow world events closely. Thank you Mr. Franken for not speaking to us as stupid blind followers!
