I thought this is a great book as it is REALLY realitstic and you can realate with Virginia (Rusty) very easily. The story line is about a girl who has lived in America for 5 years (after being evaccutated there for safety during the Second World War) and what happens to her when she arrives back in England. I won't go on otherwise there will be no point you reading the book!! I recommend this for 11-15 year olds.

Tender as Hellfire : A Novel - book cover picture

Tender as Hellfire by Joe Meno is the book everyone needs to read and own. The vivid and unconventional way Joe writes is something you don't want to miss. He completely captures Dough and Pills' unwaivering spirit in a way you can't help but admire. The mixture of the cruel truth and surreality entrances you like no other. So if you have the misfortune of being unable to meet Joe read the book. Much like him it's sweet yet harsh.

The Mountain of the Women : Memoirs of an Irish Troubadour - book cover picture

The most enjoyable Book on CD'S I have ever read.Liam makes it come alive to the extent that you would think he was at the fireside reading it to you. His descriptions of events are full of colour and shadings that make it really interesting.I can unreservedly recommend this CD collection to anyone. I'm just on the last of the five cd's now and I'm sorry in many ways that I'm almost finished it - I just wish there was more. Still I'll read the whole book next although I doubt if it will be as good as listening to the author reading it.

An unflinching look at America's most important Songwriter

Book title: Woody Guthrie : A Life

Woody Guthrie : A Life - book cover picture

I first picked up a copy of this book after Bruce Springsteen mentioned during a concert that he had read it and loved it. It inspired him to sing a very sad and mournful rendition of This Land is Your Land and to explain why it was really an angry song and not at all the happy little ditty we remembered from childhood. That was a fitting introduction to this book of his life which was also not a happy little ditty. Woddie Guthrie's life and music speak to more than just Folk Music fans and I hope more younger folks pick this book up, read it and as a result give his music a listen. If you want to hear Bruce's comments on this book, they preceed his performance of This Land is Your Land on his Live performance Boxed Set. I highly recommend listening to NEBRASKA and THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD while reading this book!!

Armageddon: The Battle for Germany, 1944-1945 - book cover picture

Max Hastings has penned a magisterial masterpiece, one of the finest war histories that I have ever read. As an author, his attention to detail is meticulous, his reporting first-rate. As an analyst, his thoughts are derived from the facts he has unearthed, grounded soberly in the realities of the time. This tale of bloodshed at a time of foreseen outcomes tells more about the horrors of war, and the cold calculations that can go into its execution, than any work I have ever read or seen.

Those who Will Not remember The Past...

A Canticle for Leibowitz (Bantam Spectra Book) - book cover picture

Walter M.Miller Jr. offers us a look into the years of a post-apocolypic world run by gangs and highwaymen. The work begins in an almost medevial time, with the clergy protecting the pre- deluge spoils of Rome with a fervor. The day to day machinations of these poor acolytes with their dedications is to look into the past instead of the future. The appearance of the strange "Benjamin" heralds a journey into that future that none knows or would care to see. Walter M. Miller Jr. handles this tale with such aplomb that we are led through hundreds of years of time and changing circumstance with a smooth, unveiled cadence that lulls the reader into a calm look into a history that never was-until the last chapters where we realize that technology has been reborn in its most monsterous form-and that it's all about to happen again. Hence the title for my humble take on a CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ.

A Non Expert's Review

Book title: The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-first Century

The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-first Century - book cover picture

I am a lowley civilian. Many of the reviews here seem to come learned insiders. Experts in the field need read no furhter. I found the book excellent and thought provoking. The thought process that goes into the Pentagon's budgeting process, and how it is/was tied to the Pentagon's view of the world and potential enemies was of interest. One can argue that 2 or 3 or 11 different kinds of forces are needed to do the job of winning early 21st century battles, war and then the peace, but the author was the first to get me, an average guy, to focus on the very different needs of our military today vs. 10 years ago in a comprehensive, well reasoned manner. I recommend this book to those that wish to get a peak behind the curtain at the Pentagon and the Naval War College and plans for military action in the 21 st century

With No One As Witness (Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers Novels) - book cover picture

This is the first Elizabeth George novel I've read and I think it is terrific and am going to read some more George novels. So many novels today are mere outlines but George develops all the characters in detail. Perhaps there was one or two references to characters in movies that we were supposed to refer to. Perhaps not. The ending was not very satisfying but neither is life. The touch and feel of London was great. Actually the ending wasn't very good. The villan Hillier got away with everything and our hero was defeated. Are the all her novels like that I wonder?

A lasting monument from a great man

The Mute's Soliloquy : A Memoir - book cover picture

This book is a monument for hundreds who died at the Buru penal colony. It also recorded the extraordinary human spirit of those prisoners who were left there practically to die from the cruel treatments, harsh environment and corrupt practices from the military officials. This book is also a remarkable memoir. It is like a mirror that enable you to look at yourself, your life, your relationships and the depth of your soul. Many told me that they cried when they read about Pram's suffering. However this great man do not need our pity. He is a fighter, it is not possible to destroy this man. Despite all the arms and his army, Suharto fear this man who is armed only with humanity and compassion.A memoir that should be in your library!

One of Crichton's Best

State Of Fear - book cover picture

This book is a great book. I don't see how anybody could be giving this 1 star besides the fact that this book just upset them in some way. And the characters are very well thought out. One of the people is made so you don't like him so all you people that are whining can get over it. If your not into Crichton's other books this one probably won't change your mind but if you have and open mind and realize that this is a "SCIENCE FICTION/TECHNO THRILLER" then I highly suggest it. It will open up your mind and actually make you think "Wow what else could be a lie?"
