What a fabulous back yard read this book was! The writing was excellent, the plot engaging and the characters highly entertaining. I particularly loved Alice's grandmother, the feisty 89 year old former actress who loved to dress in designer clothes and wear red lipstick when company came over. Alice Hammond is a single thirty-something working woman in Manhattan when her jerk boyfriend of five years (Nick) dumps her via telephone for another woman and gives her six weeks to clear out of his apartment. Alice is staying with her crotchety grandmother temporarily until a caregiver can be replaced (and unbeknownst to her at the time, she is pregnant) and thus begins this tale of this unique, colorful family. My only regret was that the book ended when it did. I loved the character of Dan and would have liked to seen his character developed more. Perhaps a sequel is in order, Ms. Lewis!?

A charming memoir, I laughted and I wept

The Hills of Tuscany - book cover picture

Mate is a delightful writer, giving the reader a real sence of Tuscany and it's warm and wonderful people. Last May I was in Montepulciano and we walked to the small village of Monticchiello, where as Mate say "in the finest Italian tradition, instead of giving directions..." we were lead to the house of a shop owner who's shop was closed. That brought tears to my eyes. It was wonderful to re-walk the street and plaza of Montepulciano and better yet to experience life there through the eyes and hearts of people who are open to wonderful new experiences and people.

The Blood Road : The Ho Chi Minh Trail and the Vietnam War - book cover picture

This is a must-read for all Vietnam veterans and students of the Vietnam War. Author Prados outlines why we were never able to interdict the flow of troops and supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail through Laos into South Vietnam. As a veteran of C-130 flare missions searching for trucks over the Trail, I now understand why our task was often so fruitless.Sam McGowan

I was in pain from laughing so hard!

Book title: Autobiography of a Fat Bride : True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood

Autobiography of a Fat Bride : True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood - book cover picture

This is, hands down, the most hilarious book I've read in a long time. I could not put it down for a minute--I read the whole thing in a matter of hours. I laughed so hard that I had tears streaming down my face the whole time, and my abdominal muscles were actually sore. Laurie's descriptions of her life events are ones we can all relate to, but it's her incredible wit that brings out the humor in every situation. (In fact, I had to go back and read some chapters several times, because they were so funny.) I've made my mother, my friends, and even my husband read it, and they all agree. I can't wait to read her other books!

Using an Art Theft to Illustrate Art Stealing

The Rescue Artist : A True Story of Art, Thieves, and the Hunt for a Missing Masterpiece - book cover picture

There were two things that struck me about this book.

First of course was the setting in the world of the very rich where art thieves steal priceless paintings. What I had to do first was turn to the pictures to see if they really looked like Cary Grant. Nope!

Second was the comparison with a lot of other undercover police books that have come out in recent years. Most have dealt with drug enforcement. The world of the high end art thief seems a lot more civilized a place than some back alley heroin warehouse.

Mr. Dolnich has written this book around the theft of a painting in Norway. He uses this central theme as a way to educate us all in the overall history of the big time art stealing.

This is a book well written about an unusual subject and filled with some very interesting people.

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day (Oprah's Book Club) - book cover picture

This book is so wonderful. Halfway through the book, I found myself looking furtively toward the end, not wanting to spoil the ending for myself but at the same time wanting to ensure that nothing horrible would happen to characters who already felt like dear friends. And I think that Eddie, even with his dark side, is just about the most perfect man I have ever heard of; I just really hope he (or some reasonable facsimile thereof) actually exists somewhere!

Pain Free : A Revolutionary Method For Stopping Chronic Pain - book cover picture

OK, so I'm in pain and willing to try anything for my neck. I did these simple positions. They are not stretches or exercize per say but rather poses for muscular realignment. Anyway, I did them this morning exactly as described. And I had no neck pain when I was done, 30 minutes later. I figured, ok, I distracted my neck for 10 or 15 minutes (which would be a miricle in itself), but I went without pain medication for almost 4 hours. I am going to do these every morning, and I don't commit to much!

The Rise of Professional Society: England Since, 1880 - book cover picture

One can hardly exaggerate the importance of this book in Historical research. This analysis of the mechanisms of Modern English society presents an original and suggesting view point about the industrialised world as a whole, one that seems to put together all the pieces Historians had gathered without knowing how to connect. Harold Perkin shows how the professional elites in both hemispheres have been shaping the world to their image, interests and ambitions, and what dangers this scenario brings with it. His theory overcomes the old-fashioned and limited concepts of capitalism and socialism that have hampered any progress in our understanding of the contemporary world and created myths that should no longer prevail. A must.

Best book I've read in ages!

More Than You Know: A Novel - book cover picture

This is my first Beth Gutcheon novel. I'm hooked. I read it well into the night, just didn't want to put it down and couldn't wait to find out what happened to Hannah and Conary. Gutcheon's characters take on a life of their own. You can feel their silent pain, their joys in knowing what it is to truly live. Gutcheon's ability to capture the family dynamics from all angles is amazing. She enabled the reader to actually feel sympathy for the unlikeliest of characters. This book was suspenseful and spooky! The ghostly hauntings are handled well -- well enough to make me wish I hadn't read until late into the night! The intertwined love story is icing on the cake. Enjoy!
