Under the Volcano : A Novel (Perennial Classics) - book cover picture

Lowry's book is amazing! Its stunning setting and complex characters are fascinating and the story mesmerizes the reader.Unofortunately, the editing of the book is of very low quality. There are innumerable errors in spelling and in the typeface, which is a shame because it breaks up the lyrical lilt of the words. As an illustration of the flaws in the book, look no further than the front cover, where the name of the author is spelled two different ways!Still, it is worth the time and effort to read, and since no other version of the book is available, this one should be recommended.

Brian Wells, Esquire, reviews "A History of Prussia"

Book title: A History of Prussia

A History of Prussia - book cover picture

This compact little book is an excellent primer to the history of the small kingdom which would over the course of 200 years (from the crowning of Frederick William, the Great Elector,in 1640 until the crowning of William I as Emperor of all Germany in 1871) would rise to the position of dominate power in Central Europe and a world power with aspirations toward a foreign empire on the order of the British Empire. Dense with information, the book serves as a reference book rather than a book which is merely read once and place on the shelf. It provides an excellent companion book to have on hand while reading any other book on German/Prussian History. The very denseness ot the factual material may make reading the book for the first time somewhat difficult. Yet the book does have a good index by which information can be retrieved at a later point in time. All in all it is a necessary addition to the German History section of any private library.

This is an amazing book, but not for the weak of heart

Book of Sorrows, The - book cover picture

I think this is an extraordianry book, with a great story and characters that you feel as if you already know. The fact that the characters are animals is also wonderful, because then you don't have to wonder about their race or ethnicity. This is a great book, that I found to be very uplifting, but there are some parts that are disturbing to the weak-hearted. Despite the sometimes gruesome details, this is definately a book everyone should read.

Excellent Process to Murder

The Case of the Lazy Lover - book cover picture

Very well-plotted mystery. Especially, the process to the murder is very complicated and fascinating. The disclosure of who is murdered is so surprising, so explosive! That makes this story outstanding. It is well-known that Mason's clients are always innocent. That seems to limit the mystery, but Mason mysteries are not so easy. It is not sure whether the clients tell the truth. They often tell various lies on various reasons, but sometimes they tell the genuine truth. This is perplexing, and that makes it difficult for Mason and readers to guess what really happened.

Glass Menagerie - book cover picture

This play tells the story about a family with his sad difficulties. Tennessee had the talent of describing characters so well that you could think he was a psychologist. And because of this well describing you can even learn while you are enjoying this play. Learn about human problems. We read it in class and every time after we'd read a little, our teacher showed us the same we'd read with the film. I must say, that helped really to realise the story with its little details. Personally I preferred the character of Tom. His story is about liberation from his family. I think every person has to go through this period of life. Not in a extreme way as him, but I think this fact makes it easy to feel with him, and to understand his acting.

504 Decorative Vignettes in Full Color (Dover Pictorial Archive Series) - book cover picture

Lots of variety, good images that seem to have been scanned in from original postcards. I found them quite useable, the majority are crisp and clear. They are pretty easy to cut out too in terms of not having too many sharp/difficult corners. Subjects range from people to flowers to animals to buildings/castles. Some are comic in nature (big heads, small bodies) others are victorian looking. Excellent collection, and like I said earlier - lots of variety to play with.

Forests of the Heart (Newford) - book cover picture

I thoroughly enjoyed "Forests of the Heart". Bettina is a fabulous character - I hope to meet her again in another book. I found the blend of Native and Celtic folklore/magics fascinating and I plan to do more reading about Native mythology. The story was fast-paced, and I don't think the character development suffered in the slightest. I have to say, the interludes in the music store inspired me to buy a copy of "High Fidelity"! I highly recommend this book, but agree with the previous reviewer - read the 3 short story collections before picking this up. His previous book, "Someplace to be Flying" is also a must-read.

The Most Complete Java Book

Java How to Program (3rd Edition) - book cover picture

This was the only book I've seen, which covered pretty much everything I needed to learn in Java. In fact, its style in tutoring is very efficient because neither does it bore you with too much details, nor does it confuse you with too little. The main reason why I liked this book though is because it was the only one that explained inheritance and polymorphism clearly. I consider the clarity of explaining inheritance and polymorphism the most important benchmark for Java books. The reason is because if the author didn't know them well, then he better off not teach the rest of Java; which mostly depend on them.

Ender's Game (Ender Quartet) - book cover picture

Having read Ender's Game a little over a year ago, I can still remember staying up until 3AM begging for "only a few more minutes! "This is a true example of how science-fiction should be written. The entire plot fits together, although the main character (Ender) seemed suspiciously like an adult in a 6-year old's body. But anyone who questions ender is a fool. I've heard arguments that he is a brilliant tactician, yet gets beat up so it doesn't make sense. WRONG. A brilliant tactician doesn't need to be a built up mud-slugger. that's what grunts are for.Easily in the Top 3 science fiction books with only Dune (of course, what else) and 2001: Space Odyssey above it.

Great redefined

How Great Generals Win - book cover picture

Bevin Alexander's book may redefine the meaning of "great" commander for some of its readers. A lot of readers are in the same classroom as I when it comes to military history. I grew up accepting that the generals presented to me in history class were the best because my betters said they were. Especially, when it came to the Civil War. They don't cast bronzes of incompetents, right? Maybe, maybe not, but Mr. Alexander did a convincing job explaining why some of history's spotlights are on the wrong statues. A lack of military history won't prevent anyone from reading and enjoying his book. He will set the stage for each adventure and allow the reader to be swept along by the likes of Hannibal, Lawrence of Arabia and Erwin Rommel without loosing him. These stories are real, first class, adventures and that's how Mr. Alexander's book comes across.
