Got me interested in areas I didn't think very interesting

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lost Civilizations - book cover picture

If you want a good entertaining view of Archaeology, check this book out. Dr Ryan's sense of humor and immense knowledge that I experienced while taking a couple classes by him at a local college, really comes out in his book. He gives the same amount of attention to all the major civilizations and also delves into what some of us may consider "kooky" areas of archaeology without being critical. For someone that may be interested in becoming an Archaeologist he tells you what to expect and where to go for information. Like I said in my title, I didn't really think Central and South American archaeology was very interesting but after reading this book, I'm rethinking that opinion.

The Secret Adversary (Agatha Christie Mysteries Collection (Paperback)) - book cover picture

Being one who is far from fond of the characters of Tommy and Tuppence, I picked up this book wary of what I would find unfolded in the pages. However, my fears were unallayed. This book is in no comparison to 'Postern of Fate', the last book featuring this daring duo, and also one of few mysteries of Agatha that entirely lacks a plot. From the first pages, the story has a tightly woven plot that toils for more of a surprise effect than realism. Reminiscent of 'The Big Four', another fantastically interesting mystery, 'The Secret Adversary' is made for those seeking adventure in their lives, not a feasible plot. With Christie swinging her signature style of convincing you the murderer really IS the other person (when in reality it is the man on the right), nothing could be more of a thriller and relaxing story than 'Secret Adversary'. My suggestion: read this. After all, there's practically a money-back guarantee you'll like it.

Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Book One: Prodigal Son - book cover picture

I hate reviews that tell me too much about a book.

What I loved about Prodigal Son was the pacing, the gritty feel of the darker parts of New Orleans (my personal favorite city), and complex characters who were interwoven in this thriller. I was also thrilled to know that Kevin J. Anderson was a co-author on this adventure. Kevin's novelizations for SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN capture the feel of the movie as well as allow a reader to fill in with their own imagination. How I wish that FRANKENSTEIN had been made for TV or Film...I'd be in line at least twice to see it because of the craftmanship of Anderson & Koontz on paper only makes my want to see a filmed interpretation that much more.

Nineteen Eighty-Four (Penguin Twentieth Century Classics S.) - book cover picture

This book describes an extreme situation of what totalitarianism can lead to. But I think that's just the power of the book; because the state, as talked about in the book,is an extreme example, but I think that extremes show the real danger of something; it makes you more aware of a situation (a state form, a social question etc.) than a report based on real facts does. therefore you also shouldn't take this book for real, but you should take parts of this books and compare them to reality. and by doing so you'll find a lot of things that form, as described in the book, dangers in present day society also. this book actually shows all what totalitarianism can lead to, and therefore enables you to see the danger of it

The Scourging of Iraq : Sanctions, Law and Natural Justice - book cover picture

The author provides a vivid picture of the effects of the US's methodical destruction of the life support infastructure in Iraq during "Desert Storm" and its relationship to, and the continuing use of, "Economic Warfare", i.e. "sanctions" to produce hundreds of thousands of deaths, targeting especially babies and children, the elderly and the chronically ill, by starvation and preventable diseases.

In the Shadow of the Law : A novel - book cover picture

Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE SHADOW OF THE LAW as a first class debut novel & a powerfully elegant read, offering a deep look into the workings of top American law firms. The two lives of a lawyer -- the personal & the professional are also craftily highlighted. However, because of the legalese, this book will probably be better enjoyed by readers well-versed in law, or have a passion for legal-fiction. Not your usual travel or vacation read -- THE SHADOW OF THE LAW is meant to be savored, relished & enjoyed.

LaBrava - book cover picture

There's something about Elmore Leonard's dialogue that has always struck me as true to life. I don't know why I know this, I've never met any of the people who populate his books. It's just that they talk to each other in the way that I imagine these people do.Of all Mr. Leonard's books (and I've read almost all of them), La Brava has always been my favorite. Mr. Leonard crawls inside his characters heads and lets us share what goes on in there. It's great fun and a wonderful read.

Book title: Terminal

Terminal - book cover picture

Brian Keene established himself as a great new author, and a powerful voice in horror upon the release of The Rising (also worth checking out).

But in Terminal, Keene's fiction reaches an all new level. It isn't often I can get so emotionally connected to a character as I could in Terminal. And even though Tommy, the protagonist, is doing something that is wrong by almost any code of ethics out there, I could still relate to the character.

Terminal is a great and moving story. Just don't expect a light, fun summer read to take to the beach. It's a dark tale of love and loss, and how one mistake can affect the lives of so many people.

You do not want to miss this one.

A Little Java, A Few Patterns - book cover picture

There are really only a few ideas in object oriented programming, but this is often obscured by the complexity of the language implementation, and is especially the case with JAVA, which has such a robust library. If you are trying to get at the essential concepts by browsing the library, you frankly will be unlikely to see the forest for the trees. This book glides lightly over the forest. If you love programming for its potential for elegance, then read this book--if it's strictly a practical affair for you, then skip it, it will seem too removed.
