Lost and Found: Dogs, Cats, and Everyday Heroes at a Country Animal Shelter - book cover picture

I volunteer at my local animal shelter every day. I see it all--the ignorant humans, the frightened pets, the happy endings and the all-too-frequent deaths. Lost and Found does a terrific job of telling the animal welfare tale, and it hits all the issues while remaining utterly readable and thoroughly gripping. If you want the inside scoop on what goes on at animal shelters, this is your book. Moving, inspiring, and TRUE.

Sister Carrie (Oxford World's Classics) - book cover picture

A nice blunt written book, very unusual for an early 1900's novel, yet interesting story I must admit. I never really liked this author, but this book has changed much of that statement. Sister Carrie is a rich and entertaining twisted tragic novel. I reccommend it but what I just don't understand is why this novel was called "SISTER" carrie. Oh well, maybe only the author knowns.

Blood and Chocolate - book cover picture

When I first picked up this book, I thought that it was a little bit weird. But after reading it I feel this overwelming sense of what Vivian was going through. Very insightful, probing. I could feel the anguish that she felt when her father died. The fights between herself and her mother.... And also, when Gabriel became pack leader, I had this feeling that he would be a good leader and a good husband/mate for Vivian. My only wish is that there would be a sequal, becuase then I would probably read it up.

From Bomba to Hip-Hop - book cover picture

While Juan Flores is perceptive in his discussion of the Puerto Rican component of Latino culture, and discusses other major critics like Perez Firmat and Stavans, I was frankly surprised not to see any discussion of William Luis's Dance Between Two Cultures: Latino Caribbean Literature Written in the United States, which in my estimation is as important as those written by the critics Flores discusses. The value of Luis's study is that he addresses the same Puerto Rican community mentioned in Flores' book, but Luis also contextualizes this community by considering its relation to the Cuban and Dominican components of Latino culture. Anyone interested in understanding Latino literature and culture should also read Dance Between Two Cultures, which contains perceptive readings of Latino Caribbean literature unavailable in any other study.

Life As Gilda Saw It.

It's Always Something - book cover picture

I have read "It's Always Something" by Gilda Radner probably a dozen or so times. Last night, I finished it once again. The message that Gilda gives to us is that you can never give up and no matter how bad things may seem in your own life, it can always be worse. Gilda Radner was a class act. She left behind memories that will someday make my children laugh. Gilda died as she lived; with respect, humor and dignity. Whenever I feel that life cannot get any worse, I pick up her book and it inspires me to go back out there and do whatever I can do to just get through the day. She is right when she says that some poems don't rhyme and some stories do not have a clear beginning, middle or end. Life was too short for Gilda. Her incredible life is her legacy. She made me laugh and I miss her. I finished the book once again, and I feel very sad today.

A Prayer for Owen Meany - book cover picture

This book takes place, largely, in the late 50's, early 60's, but that doesn't make the themes of the book (Friendship, love, religion, and morality) any less identifiable. It's a very funny book in parts (Just picturing the scene with the VW in the assembly hall is funny!) It's also very touching. All I can say is that, as Owen might say, "YOU HAVE TO EXPERIENCE IT FIRST-HAND TO KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE!" In other words, I could never describe the book to you, you just have to go read it!

This book is very well written

Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover: 10 Steps to Your B.E.S.T. Body : Balance, Energy, Stamina, Toxin-Free - book cover picture

I read lots of health and nutrition books and this one is excellent, and it's not written by an "expert". Marilu has condensed a lot of health information in one book. She has answers to my questions that I have piece-mealed from other sources. I have eliminated dairy, my first step, and I believe it has showed in my skin tone. I'm planning on following some of the other steps as well. I am very critical and objective when I read any health information, and I do take issue with some of Marilu's points, however I can research them further on my own by "experts". All in all, this book was excellent, motivating and easy to read.

Hack outwrites Clancy, Coonts and Marcinko!

Book title: The Price of Honor

The Price of Honor - book cover picture

Having read all of the books by Col. Hackworth, Stephen Coonts, and most of the Tom Clancy and Richard Marcinko efforts, I feel Col. Hackworth has topped them all with "The Price of Honor". His vivid description and prose can only come from someone that has been there and done that. Weaving the past with the current events, makes this a very intriquing and soul searching novel. It also helps us question the current status of Our Military and their Political Leadership. Caleb Tarleton (Capt. USAR 1959-1967)
