When you are done reading it, you wish he could have stayed the full 8 years with Clinton, and the book was 800 pages long!!!! Liberal to the bone, Robert Reich, the finest Secretary of Labor this country's had, tells the lows and highs of 4 years in the Clinton's cabinet (first term). He respects the republicans; but he let's them have it too. From lobying in Congress to trying to get into the White House without his ID. Just funny. What a fantastic inside look. I could not put it down and was sad when it was over. Enjoy!!

Disgustingly Good...

Montaillou : The Promised Land of Error - book cover picture

This book was a very good look at the early Church. In school I was always taught that the first Christain group to rebel againt the Catholics, was Martin Luther's people. Just another thing public school messes up. It was amazing to learn there were "heretical groups" almost 300 years before Luther. I also surprised my English professor when I told her there were Inquisitions before the famous Spanish one.The most disguting part though, was the "cure for lust" It was better for the priests to have intercourse with boys on dung heaps than to sleep with women. It's interesting to know that, while these were Cathars and not Catholics, this type of homosexual pedaphilia is nothing new to religion. Definitely a book well worth reading to get another look at the insanity of the Middle Ages.

This is a book which evokes our best emotions and thoughts.

The Notebook - book cover picture

I know this book will stay with me for a long time. Although it is a simple book, the feelings it evokes are not simple, but deep. It's the kind of book which brings out the best emotions a human being can have. That is its strength. <P> Those who take the dialogue and descriptions out of context and disparage them, are ignoring the whole idea of the book. I thought the letters were touching and the love described beautiful. The simple language goes well with the simple ideal of true love. Although it may be a simple ideal, we can't ignore the universality of it. It is this universality which gives the book its realism.

An epic glory

The Pillars of the Earth - book cover picture

There has rarely been as gripping a story as this one that touches on so many emotions and feelings. The story revolves around a select few characters and their struggle to reach their goals. The beautiful daughter of a fallen king wishes to regain her father's land, the gentle father wishes simply to build a cathedral that will be a true testament to his craft...and so on. Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for us, there is a counterpart to this cast of heroes, which is a devilish cast of villians whose goals conflict nicely with those of the heroes. All seven or so characters end up playing against each other, relying on fellow good guys or doublecrossing fellow bad guys as this handful of people tries to get what they want in the backdrop of an exquisitely drawn Middle Age England. This book is gripping and masterfully put together by an expert storyteller.

I totally agree with everyone else's reviews, and thought I was the only one to have discovered the magic of this book - I'm glad I was wrong. I'm a huge Alan Garner fan and this book was a study read at school 20 years ago. Usually I greatly dislike books I'm 'forced' to read, but this one is so magical, fantastical and memorable that I make a point to read it every year...and every year it gets better. I shall definitely be passing this onto my children!

The Seduction - book cover picture

Based on past reading experience with Julia Ross's books, I began reading THE SEDUCTION with very high hopes. I was not disappointed. Taking place during the Georigan period, the settings and costumes are absolutely luscious! The main characters, Alden and Juliet, seem to be as opposite as 2 people can be -- who only meet due to Alden losing a wager.Throughout the story, Juliet and Alden's interactions -- and the reasons for how they act -- flow and intermingle so smoothly it is hard to put the book down. These characters get under your skin. And the writing is so fantastic (elegant, smooth, accessible) that I immediately began a reread upon completion. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Sabbathday River - book cover picture

This book has some very minor flaws but I still had to give it 5 stars and here's why: This is one of those rare books that is so well-written and so engrossing that it is impossible to put down. I absolutely hated to finish it. At the heart of the book, is the murder of 2 babies, who may or may not be related and the trial of a woman who may be falsely accused, even though the evidence seems to point to her as the murderer. Behind the main story, however, are the kinds of details that make a book truly come alive, revealing deeper and deeper layers of complexity and mystery as the story unfolds. There is so much here to hold the reader - the descriptions of small town life, characters which are not stereotypical, portrayals of women searching for their identity in the rather constricted community they inhabit. Finally, there is the story itself, which is gripping, intriguing and horrifying. One of my favorite books of the year!

I Know This Much Is True - book cover picture

This book-on-tape stayed with us and haunted us for some time. The psychological insights were thought provoking. We should all be so lucky as to have the protagonist's shrink. (She seemed insightful and didn't waste time.) My only complaint - and this may be due to us inadvertently missing a portion of the audio - is that we did not hear how he came into money. I hope it was our listening error and not bad editing on the part of the audio producer. Looking forward to reading/hearing more of Mr. Lamb's books.
