I absolutely adored this book! I loved the premise of a reality show about the life a Victorian-era duke - and his American duchess (the heroine, Tessa). Tessa was refreshingly funny as she is thrust into the role of Max Edgerton's duchess, complete with a lady's maid who is a stickler for details, and who tries to bully Tessa into compliance. Tessa is immediately attracted to Max, but she attempts to keep him at a distance (unsuccessfully, thank goodness!), considering that she's only just met him. Max is a sexy hero with just enough alpha in him to be interesting, but not annoyingly inflexible. I've read all of Ms. MacAlister's books, and have enjoyed them all - but THE CORSET DIARIES is my new favorite! I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good spot of humor with their romance.

As an african american woman in her fourties, I was given this book when I was 10 years old. I longed for a life of riches and a different place in life. Polly's story touched me in ways you can never imagine. Made me appreciate the best of my own life and what being "an old-fashioned girl" had to offer in terms of family, friends and values. I re-read it every year to center my thoughts and my view of mankind. All girls should read it. Polly's story runs circles around Jo's story for me!

Cat and Mouse - book cover picture

Cat and Mouse is a heart-racing book you won't want to put down, and it will have you continually questioning just who is the cat and who is the mouse. Mr. Smith, Cross's psychopathic murdering rival, surpasses Soneji in his cruelty and intelligence and shocks even the avid Patterson reader. Surprises too are in store in this novel as Patterson is known for. I enjoyed every minute reading this book -- it made an 11-hour flight seem much shorter. Read it!

Why I Am Still a Christian - book cover picture

This short book is definitely Kung's most accessible treatment of the essentials of the Christian faith. Written specifically for the average layperson, yet lucid enough to engross any serious theologian, Kung presents the basic theological program which is the essence of his much grander works such as "On Being a Christian" and "The Church." In a nutshell, Kung, like Luther before him, calls for constant renewal of the Christian Church in the name of the man who is its source and criterion: Jesus Christ Himself.

Hunger (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) - book cover picture

I read this book on a vacation last year and found I was looking forward to my next hotel room or moment on the boat to read this book as much as the expedition itself! The protagonist is an amazing loner, a captivatingly desprate man with the single purpose of escaping the pain of his life. Every moment of the novel is filled with a tense hope only to be dashed by ironic black humor and then built up again. Hamsun keeps us intrigued with both the character's intelligence and the bizzarre and often funny miserable situations he pinballs through.

9 Secrets of Women Who Get Everything They Want - book cover picture

Kate White tells it like it is. Her writing style is entertaining, effective, and humorous. I enjoyed her "just between us girls" tone. I've found myself going back to some of her advice and applying it successfully in my everyday life. She may espouse material pleasures--i.e., getting a massage, buying a beautiful outfit--but, for better or worse, we live in a materialistic world. And what's wrong with using some of your hard-earned cash to make yourself feel good?

Winters Tale (New Penguin Shakespeare) - book cover picture

"A sad tale's best for winter." And this tale is full of misperceived motives, anger, absurdities, seeming tragedy, and hysterical comedy. The Winter's tale is one of my all-time favorite Shakespearean stories. The story revolves upon tragicomic figure of Leontes, King of Sicilia. Essentially a good King, Leontes buys himself a heepin' spoonful o' trouble and grief because of his suspicion, envy, and foolish rashness. I won't spoil the story here so I will end by saying that The Winter's Tale is a wonderfully entertaining story of romance, loss, redemption and restoration. It is of course superbly written; with Shakespeare tossing in one of his great comic rogues: Autolycus. This book gets my highest recommendation

If you're interested in American symbols of all kinds and/or in the varied and changing attitudes Americans have had toward liberty and freedom, this is a must-have book. Well-organized, easy to read but profound, with over 500 illustrations, this book again marks David Hackett Fischer as an author with a unique understanding of how the country's present has developed out of a past few Americans understand. Bravo, David!

Carson McCullers' first and best

Book title: The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter - book cover picture

This is an easy to read, sad and thought provoking novel that stayed with me a long time after finishing. The story involves the lives of four characters as they revolve around the life of a deaf mute in a small southern town in the 1930's. The story of the five main characters is so void of ego and superficiality that it allows their voices to resonate after you've finished with such haunting power it is miraculus to behold. Carson McCullers, who was increadibly only 23 when she wrote the book, writes with such fresh clean talent and crafts the arc of the characters with such sublety that it didn't hit me until the very end of the book where the elusive paths of the characters were leading to. The inside cover of the book calls McCullers a creative genius and after reading it I would have to be inclined to agree. The book reminds us that innocence at any age may be fleeting, so hold on to it as long as you can.
