Frommer's Washington State (1st Ed) - book cover picture

I found this to be an excellent user friendly, tradtional tourist guide book. However, it was published in 1998 and would be better if updated. It offers "The best of" in more than a dozen categories such as restaurants, B&Bs, hikes, etc which gives good starting points for trip planning. Phone numbers and web site address are available to obtain more detailed information on areas of interest. A map of "Washington State Driving Times " was very helful since we have found that in unfamiliar locations, driving times are sometimes easy to misfigure based only on milage. Like other Frommer's guide books that I have used, I find this type of advice the best because it lists good choices from expensive to budget. For an average family tourist, this book is an excellent general guide.

Cat to the Dogs (Joe Grey Mysteries (Hardcover)) - book cover picture

With this fifth entry in her well-done series, Shirley Rousseau Murphy gives us the best yet.Joe Grey and Dulcie, two talking and intelligent, cats are catapulted into a labyrinthine mystery of murder, embezzlement, shoplifting, and deceit. Joe and Dulcie are wonderful characters, imbued with such human characteristics, that you almost forget they are cats. Joe's repartee with his human, Clyde, is delightful, and the way they play the informants to hapless Det. Harper is lots of fun.The addition of the Tortoiseshell kit is a nice touch, too. As in all of these mysteries, the plot is not the main thing, but the way these cats go about solving the murders. This one has a tightly woven plot, and even though the identity of the culprits is revealed earlier than usual, the way they are captured and the resultant aftermath are delightful.A great entry in this series, can't wait for her next one!

Clay's Quilt (Ballantine Reader's Circle) - book cover picture

I enjoyed reading all the reviews of this book. I don't think I could add anything to them. I just want to encourage you not to miss this book. I came away loving the characters, the countryside and the wisdom of this little book. I look forward to reading more by Mr. House. One phrase that caused a lump in my throat was something to the effect that families, like seeds that are scattered, cannot grow. This book made me really think about family.

Night Tales: Nightshade & Night Smoke : Nightshade\Night Smoke - book cover picture

This is a re-release for a new generation of Nora Fans.

NIGHTSHADE: This is Boyd Fletcher's partner from Night Shift, Althea Grayson's story. Her 'nemesis' is Colt Nightshade. Their relationship is hot and heavy. Lots of wonderful tension. He gets under her nails and then, she lets him. Basic mystery story comes close to my profession of abuse counseling, and it was well done by Nora. I am convinced that Althea is the prototype for Eve Dallas in Nora's J. D. Robb series. It was fun recognizing the signs. The story was very good. Nora sure knows how to write a love scene.

NIGHT SMOKE: This was Natalie's story and my least favorite of the four "Night Tales". But it did bring back all the characters from the 3 previous stories. The 'family' aspect of that is something I liked a lot.

I consider all of Nora's books Keepers. They entertain and what more could you ask?

Hidden political messages in Seuss

Book title: Hop on Pop
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Hop on Pop - book cover picture

Hop on Pop, besides being a brilliant learning tool for children, has the added dimension of a hidden historico-political message. Pop is not only the literal father of the hopping children, but a representation of monarchy. Kings are after all seen in a paternalistic role towards their countries. More specifically, Pop is Charles the First of England, and the "hoppers" represent Oliver Cromwell and his Roundheads, who not only hopped, but chopped the monarchy out of power in the 1600s.When Pop declares "Stop. Stop. You can not hop on Pop," this is one of Seuss's most brilliant political statements. Here, the monarchy, now in the person of Charles the Second, is throwing off the rule imposed by Cromwell, and restoring to its rightful place the monarchy. "Pop" is asserting his paternal right and duty, his droit de seigneur." Le roi est mort, vive le roi!

Master and Commander - book cover picture

I remember the first time I read "Pride and Prejudice", toward the end I began to suspect who it was had actually paid off Wickham, and I simply couldn't do anything else until I had finished that book -- I read through the night. Now I read it again every few years, and it's great, but I can never again read it for the first time; that wonderful shocking suspicion and climax has lost something, simply because I know how it turns out. The O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin novels are like that. I'd give almost anything if I could go back and read these novels again for the first time. Sure, they're not for everyone, and they can be pretty rough going. But for anyone who is just beginning to make their way through the series, I envy you!

A Deeply moving, personal book

The Pull of the Moon - book cover picture

I bought this book to read during my lunch hours at work. I must say there are probably several waitresses in town wondering about the lady who looks up at them with tear-filled eyes when she orders her meal. There were moments in Pull of the Moon, simple, human moments, that made me weep just from the exquisite recognition that we are all connected emotionally, in spite of time and distance and lifestyle.

Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland - book cover picture

A wonderful book by Tomie dePaola filled with helpful information about the true story of St. Patrick's life, as well as fun legends attributed to the patron Saint of Ireland. dePaola's bold illustrations lend to the attraction of the book. He mentions at the end of the book his reasons for writing it and his attraction to Saint Patrick. My own eight year old son has a strong devotion to Saint Patrick and this book is among his favorites. I appreciate the clear differentiation between fact and legend in this book and would highly recommend it for any family.

Quincunx - book cover picture

Buy this book if you have to sell your grandmother to organ traders to do so. A young boy in 19th Century London struggles against mysterious enemies and fights to regain his rightful inheritance. Somewhat in the manner of Wilkie Collins or Dickens, with a slight, although never obtrusive, modern spin. I was so caught up I was yelling at the characters. 'No! Don't trust him! It's a trick! Doh!'So unputdownable your loved ones will have to feed you intravenously.

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl - book cover picture

When I first read this book, I felt like crying in the end. Whenever I read the book now, the entire scence comes in front of my eyes. This book prompted me to see the movie on Anne too! This book doesn't necessarily say that Anne was the only girl who suffered oppression under the Nazi rule. It gives a clear picture of what transpired in the Netherlands when the Germans tried to wipe out the jews and their supporters from the face of this earth. A must read for someone who is interested in WW and its aftermath.
