Foxfire : Confessions of a Girl Gang - book cover picture

Oates' novel begins with a furious pace and never lets up. The prose mirrors the feeling and the action of the novel -- fast-paced, raw and vibrant. Legs Sadovsky is one of the most memorable characters I have encountered in a long time -- a complex character that needs another book! I read this book in one sitting because I just couldn't stop reading. I had to find our what happened to Foxfire and Legs and why these girls ended up separating. The way Oates develops the chracterization of the gang, as if it were a character itself, is fantastic. We watch the gang go from petty vandalism to violence and prostitution, and the whole way we can understand why they have made the choices they do. I felt for these characters and never once thought they went too far, even their final act which seals their fate.

Lessons in Living - book cover picture

As a buddhist, I was a little bit turned off by the author's relating to God. But after the first few chapters I began to like the book. It really soothed my mind and uplisted my soul. I particularly like the Living Love Chapter (partly because at this point in my life I can very well relate to that). The sharing truth of life in the book did calm me down emotionally.
It seems no matter what religion we hold the basic concept of living a good life is all the same. The difference might just lie in the approach in each doctrine.

Overall I would recommend this book especially to those in need of a life recess. To stop, rethink and reevaluate our being and our lives.

Here be Dragons - book cover picture

Having been recommended this book, I finally broke down and bought it. If my high school history classes were half as entertaining, I might have become a historian! Penman's historical accuracy is phenomenal. She brings to life real people in a manner that allows us to think of these long dead characters as living, breathing beings, rather than names in history books. She paints vivid, accurate potraits of the everyday events these real characters experienced: marriages, child birth, death beds, battle fields, court discussions, imprisonments. This book is a must read for anyone who enjoys GOOD historical fiction with detailed accuracy.
The love between Llewlyn and Joanna drives the story along beautifully.

The Last Book In The Universe (Scholastic Signature) - book cover picture

The Last Book the Universe, written by Rodman Philbrick is suspenful and exciting. There is always some kind of conflict going on, whether it be fight or a rescue. There is never a dull moment. As I was reading the book, I could not put it down. The story follows a boy named Spaz who has epilepsy and is on a journey to get to his dying sister. On the way, he makes friends
with " a proov" (a genetically improved person) from Eden named Lanaya and a"gummy"(an old person who knows a lot about the past) named Ryter. Together, they fight for their lives and uncover Spaz's past. I think Philbrick has a gold mine of a book and and should have a sequel because he leaves the reader hanging on by a thead about the solution to the main prejudice problem: the antagonism between the proovs and the normals.

The Reality Dysfunction - book cover picture

I liked the book for all it's complexity and meandering thru worlds and characters on a large scale. I've read the other reviews and almost didn't buy the book. Some made it sound as if you could skip hundreds of pages others complained about sex and or violence. IMHO This is really a romp thru space with lots of characters, all of whom were interesting to me. There is violence and sex but from my point of view it is in context with the plot. No gratuitous (sp ? ) offensive stuff. The plot is dense. If you can skip hundreds of pages, and still think that you read the book. I can only estimate the size of your ego with a road atlas. Lots of space Lots of adventure. Oh and it is well written.

Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year - book cover picture

I am six months pregnant with my first child and looking for books that will help me set my expectations for the upcoming year. My sister, a mother of an 18-month old, recommended _Operating Instructions_ by Annie Lamott. It beautifully balances the horrors of colic and sleep deprivation with the relief of a supportive extended community and the joys of mothering. Also, Lamott is a luminous writer; her story made both my husband and me laugh out loud and ache painfully many times--sometimes at the same time. She doesn't have to say that she wouldn't miss being a mother for the world; one can feel the reasons with each page.

Flu : The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It - book cover picture

Gina Kolata makes science fun! Her writing is intricate and detailed and the chrononology of the epidemic is easy to follow. This true story is a true thriller. The flu pandemic of 1918 was one of the worst in the history of the world, yet so few people know it even existed. The book is interesting as well as educational. And reading "Flu" makes me want to change professions and study microbiology and cell science. Believe me, it doesn't matter if you are interested in science or not, this book is riveting and will demand your attention from start to finish!

Reading the Lines of Basil Street Blues and Between Them

Basil Street Blues - book cover picture

Although Michael Holroyd had a difficult life growing up among eccentrics, his beautiful prose and gentle sense of humor show that he nonetheless emerged as a remarkably insightful, down-to-earth adult. His descriptions of the people who influenced him are wonderfully observant, and kinder than most of the people probably deserved. On page 142, he notes that what he can reveal "emerges more between the lines of my writing," and he gives us ample lines to read between. I would strongly recommend Basil Street Blues to anyone interested in the art of memoir writing, as well as anyone interested in knowing more about Holroyd.

Dune Encyclopedia Tr - book cover picture

I got interested in the Dune series after borrowing the book from a friend when I was in highschool (who hated it!!!!). After reading it and seeing the 4 hour David Lynch version of the film I was almost obsessed with the story and the whole series. It was then discovered that my highschool library had a copy of the Dune encylopedia. I spent many hours looking through it and was literally the only student to check it out. I only wish now that I had taken it with me after graduation in 1992!!!!I hope that the publishers will see how desperate we all are to have it back in circulation and make an effort to bring it back. There are enough of us out there that want it to make a good profit for them. Let us all ban together in this effort!!!!

Shying at Trouble (Pine Hollow No. 6) - book cover picture

This Pine Hollow book is one of the best. I havn't read any further than this because I can't find any more, but I'm going to order them soon. The AJ thing was getting so frusterating, I was glad to find out the truth. I found it a bit surprising when Veronica draged the truth out of him, and as for the way she hangs on to scott - GAG! I know some people feel the same way about Alex and Lisa, but I know people like that in real life so... Carole's obsession with Samson is screaming trouble, she's forgotten all about Starlight. I think Ben should say something too her about it. and as for stevie's brothers giving her a hard time about teasing Michal, he deserves it!
