The Elements of Style, Third Edition - book cover picture

I needed a book that would draw attention to ideas and elements of writing not easily recognized. This is a small, to-the-point reference guide that I have used for my final edit on research essays. It greatly improved my writings by calling attention to my use of abstract words and adverbs--all with clear samples of proper/improper use to help you identify the difference.I would recommend this to anyone who wants a condensed reference in grammer usage, and so did my college English Professor.

What a shock!

The Handmaid's Tale - book cover picture

This book was one of the three novels taken for the exam to be an English teacher in France last year. Further I went into the analysis of the book, more I discovered how deep the text is. This book is not only prose, it is also poetry. The tone is sometimes melancholy, however the reader feels the strenghth of the narrator behind. Sometimes it sounds bizarre, even shocking, but it remains profoundly meaningful (for a female reader). I never had the occasion to read such a novel before, and I assume there are not so many comparable texts.I never felt such a thrill while reading a fiction (and I hope it will never be something else than a fiction).

a very thought provoking commentary

Book title: Adam Clarke's Commentary

Adam Clarke's Commentary - book cover picture

Adam Clarke's commentary is very unique. He believed in total sanctification and makes a very cogent argument for it. He is very scholarly , but very accessible. He takes the greek words and shows what they meant in greek works, like the Iliad, etc. He was not afraid to change the meaning of a verse when he thought that verse was inconsistent with the corpus of orthodoxy and to me, at least, it gives a much different interpretation than what i was taught..but he always backs up his interpretations with lucid commentary..would highly recommend..a definite call to holiness.

The Tribes of Palos Verdes - book cover picture

Joy Nicholson weaves an intricate tale of intriguing characters in this novel set in Palos Verdes, Calif. Reading about the dysfunctional family that Medina Mason is forced to put up with is certainly entertaining, but as some other reviewers have pointed out, there's not much of a plot to the whole story. Nevertheless, the book was extremely interesting to me because I live on the east coast and haven't really experienced the SoCal scene. The book definitely proves even the family that seems perfect on the outside has the biggest problems. With (pretty much) realistic teen experiences and encounters and exceptional blending (Nicholson neither writes too much or too little), The Tribes of Palos Verdes has a lot to offer.

This wonderful book by Sue Savage-Rumbaugh and Roger Lewin forces the reader to reevaluate what it means to be human. Kanzi is a remarkable ape that has revolutionized our understanding of how our closest relatives think, how our common ancestors may have evolved, and why we may not be as different as once supposed. Roger and Sue's collaboration is very readable and conveys the excitement of Sue's scientific research and Kanzi's remarkable talents

Acts of God: The Christ Clone Trilogy, Book Three (Christ Clone Trilogy) - book cover picture

James BeauSeigneur shows himself to be a master at keeping you on the edge of your seat! His plot twists keep you guessing, even if you're familiar with the prophetic end-times. Even though the Trilogy is a work of fiction, the scientific, medical, and political scholarship is extraordinary. BeauSeigneur has certainly done his homework! And while the technical detail in the book is incredible, it does nothing to bog down the story. In fact, it enhances the story all the more. The Christ Clone Trilogy never strays outside of what Scripture tells us, though it does take some very unexpected twists. While the trilogy may not follow the usual "party line" on all subjects, BeauSeigneur never, ever violates Scripture. In fact, he documents Scripture more than any other end-times writer I've read. This book is a must-read. If you haven't read it, you're missing out on one of the best reads of your life.

The post - modern man

Book title: Mr Phillips

Mr Phillips - book cover picture

In Mr. Phillips, John Lanchester has created not only a bitter-sweet chronical of middle-aged suburbia, but also a psychological study of the existentialist nightmare. For the coffee-table reader there are plenty of pleasing encounters covering all the major socio-literary themes of our time, but don't be deceived, these are not merely to tease and please. By all means chortle at the unfortunate antics to befall the eponymous Mr. Phillips and then enjoy reflecting on the wider social implications of this clever and witty novel.
