Uncle Tungsten : Memories of a Chemical Boyhood (Vintage) - book cover picture

Dr. Sacks was a lucky man indeed to have grown up in an intellectual and social petri dish of such richness that one can only marvel. A time when people could play piano, set sodium on fire, experiment with electronics and bask in the glow of a talented, extended family. Days of self-sufficiency and unity marred only by WWII German firebombs and the odd cruel schoolmaster straight out of a Roger Waters nightmare. There's no overprotectionism here; Oliver could easily have blown himself up on many occasions, but thankfully his parents gave him the freedom to let his curiosities run their course. By the time you've made it to the end of this book, you'll have learned quite a bit of interesting chemical knowledge, too - enough to long for days when you might be able to order a gram of thallium or a pinch of white phosphorus over the counter!

My favorite book ever!

Beauty - book cover picture

As I was browsing in a used bookstore one day, I was attracted to this book by the cover and the simple title. Over the past 10 years, I have gone back to this book again and again. I fall in love every time! The romance between Beauty and Giles is one of the most beautiful I have read anywhere. I am fascinated by time travel, fairy tales, and the struggle to discover identity, and Tepper skillfully weaves all these and more into a simply wonderful story. After reading this, I went out and looked for her other books, but the only one I would recommend beyond Beauty is "A Plague of Angels". My only caveat: some of Tepper's ideas are very liberal, but don't let that stop you from discovering this priceless book.

Best Redwall book I have read

Book title: Mattimeo (Redwall, Book 3)

Mattimeo (Redwall, Book 3) - book cover picture

Out of all of the readwall books I have read -- Redwall, Mattimeo, Mariel of Redwall, Salamdastron, The Bellmaker and currently reading mossflower -- this one is the best. The book starts out iwth a party at redwall, while a fox named Slagar goes to redwall with other vermin dressed as circus people to kidnap all of the children, including mattimeo mathias's son. It is really cool to see where the salves go, and the end will be really exciting if you have read mossflower, or have at least passed chapter 10. The really cool thing about this book is that you get to see all of the children older, and sam actually talk, unlike in Redwall. This book is best read after you have read redwall, or mossflower since it is the sequel to redwall, and was published right after mossflower.

Assassin's Apprentice - book cover picture

This book was way better than I had expected! Great story-telling (even though I don't usually like the first person), great characters (Burrich and Chade are my favorite), suspense, mystery, and just plain crazy plot turns make this one an easy 5-star! While most of the book is pretty tough on Fitz (the main character) and might be a bit depressing, the last couple of chapters are completely awesome. This is really an exciting and entertaining book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Highly reccomended for anyone who likes a unique world with a great story.

A Living Nightmare (Cirque du Freak, Book 1) - book cover picture

Cirque Du Freak is about two young teenagers and a man. Their names are Darren, Steve, and Mr. Crepsley. Darren and Steve receive tickets to this weird freak show and they end up going to it, even though they are not aloud to. They meet Mr. Crepsley and one of the boys goes to a world of vampires in order to save his friend. I can't tell you who.
I like how this book makes you want to know what's going to happen next. You don't want to put the book down and stop reading it. It's that good. It's totally unreal, but it seems real because of how the author writes it. I liked this whole entire book. I didn't hate one part of it.
This novel is part of a series and its book number one. If you do start the series, you have to read this one first. This is actually the first vampire book I read and I loved it. If you don't like fiction, I definitely wouldn't recommend this book. If you love reading books about scary stuff, this is the book for you. You can't put it down.

Fish out of water?

Book title: Brain Plague
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Brain Plague - book cover picture

The main character of the book is a young female artist--a creative and ambitious girl (not woman) who seeks a shortcut to making her art better. She agrees to allow a colony of microsized "people" to live on the outskirts of her brain, in exchange for their willingness to help her with her art projects. She gets far more than she bargained for, and finds herself embroiled in the lives of her "people" and their sister colonies who live inside other carriers. Although the carriers are a diverse group who mostly seem to consider her an upstart who can't properly "control" her colony, they slowly learn to respect her differences as she in turn matures and learns. In the long run, the "people" learn a great deal from her as well, and they end up helping her in ways having nothing to do with her art. Altogether, a fascinating and diverse group of characters interacting in plausible ways. I look forward to another book set in this world.

Starship Troopers - book cover picture

Those who dismiss this book as "right-wing facsism" probably took one look at the book and labeled it as that. They did not look deeper into the meat of the book. They would have found a world that glorifies duty, honor, responsibility, and personal integrity. Every time I read the papers and see the Secretary of the Army lowering the standards of enlistment because some minorities can't get in, or the UC system considering dropping SAT scores as an entrance requirment, I wish to myself that I could live in the world of Juan Rico.

I happened upon this book as it sat on the "New Books" shelf of the Seattle Public Library. I had never heard of Boyd at that time. The book is wonderful. Don't read reviews, read the first four pages. You'll be hooked. I find myself, three years later, remembering that the first controlled airplane flight was not at Kitty Hawk, but in Manila, and the pilot was the coroners assistant!

The Best Book on Java Programming I've Ever Found!

Book title: Java How to Program (3rd Edition)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Java How to Program (3rd Edition) - book cover picture

I learned how to program procedural languages during the 1980s and tripped and fumbled over learning object oriented programming in the 1990s (for me, programming is a hobby, not my vocation). My library is filled with books on how to program Java but no book ever took into consideration how to systematically teach the intricacies of Java in a formalized way. Until now. This book is the best book on learning Java that I've seen to date. It's a textbook, and anybody who's gone to high school or college should be familiar with how textbooks work. There are copious examples, sample problems (with answers), clear definitions, well organized passages and much more that you'll need to learn Java. If you've been having trouble learning Java, check out this book before you give up. You'll be glad you did.

Acts of Love - book cover picture

The authors' use of letters was a huge attraction! Just as Luke, one of the central characters, longed to get back each night to Jessica's letters, I, too, looked forward to getting back to this book so I could discover what happened to Jessica. Then, later, I looked forward to Luke's letters to Jessica. It made me realize how the art of letter writing is lost and how powerful it can be. You can put so much detail in a letter about your inner-most thoughts. After reading this book, I have decided to begin writing letters to my husband - to tell him of my thoughts about the day that I would never otherwise share. I seem to tell him what I did during the day but leave out the vivid descriptions and how I felt about the day.Rarely does a book make you want to adapt a new bahavior in your private life.I loved this book!
