The Greatest Salesman in the World - book cover picture

First published in 1968, Mandino's text remains relevant today, and a must read for anyone in the sales profession. If all FORTUNE 500 companies embraced this business philosophy, Corporate America would be a much better place to put in your time. My college sales instructor (Mr. Jim Null--The University of Memphis) introduced me to this book over 15-years ago, and I still read it at least once a year.

Excellent women's Civil War history book

All the Daring of the Soldier: Women of the Civil War Armies - book cover picture

I am the author of "Memories of Maggie" and "Potpourri Of War" so I readily ordered this new book to learn more about the women who served during the Civil War."All the Daring of the Soldier" was excellent. It brought forth more women than I was even aware of who did so much for their country during the Civil War. Elizabeth D. Leonard should be proud of the work she put into her research and writing. This book should be a welcomed item to anyone's collection but especially for students to learn more women's history.I only have one complaint. There was no mention of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker who also served during the Civil War and was ultimately the only woman to date to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for her actions during the war. I hope this was just an oversight on the author's part.BUT believe the rest of this book is wonderful!

Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid - book cover picture

I'm surprised not to see more discussion of the chapter on translation and meaning. I thought it was one of the best parts of the book. The Japanese translation of the book also included a Japanese version of Jabberwocky. Though I read the book several years ago, it made a deep and lasting impression in many ways. What actually brought it to mind just now was the coming year of the dragon, which reminded me of Escher's amazing wannabe 3D dragon image used in the book. I don't think anyone can deal with this book in the few weeks a library would allow you to have it...

Disappointed at first ...

Paladin of Souls - book cover picture

I was disappointed to realize that this book would not be about Cazaril but the Royina Ista. Then I began reading it, and my dissatisfaction evaporated as I became quite attached to Ista and her entourage-Liss, dy Cabon, and all the others. My only regret about Paladin of Souls is that I cannot unread it to have the pleasure of reading it again for the first time. That misfortune is somewhat mitigated, however, by the fact that I am about to begin reading the Vorkosigan series. I can't wait.

Titan : The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. (Cassette/Abridged) - book cover picture

Ron Chernow reveals one revelation after another about John D. Sr. Reading like a novel, this is not only the story of how he became a huge, financial success while still in his mid-twenties, but as he established Standard Oil, he wrote the book on how corporate structures would evolve to the present day. And, later on his philanthropic activity is nothing less than awesome...the founding of the University of Chicago, Spelman College, how all of human kind benefits to this day from the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (later Rockefeller University). Robert A. Caro said it for me in his comment on the book's jacket: "It's a thrill to read a biography as good as this one. TITAN is a triumph, a brilliant, riveting, and monumental portrait of a fascinating human being and his age."

365 Tao : Daily Meditations - book cover picture

Deng Ming-Dao is an excellent Taoist author, and in 365 Tao, he has taken a lifetime of Taoist thought and experience and sculpted it into something anyone, regardless of their religious or philosophical background, can use in their lives. Each daily entry is excellently phrased to inspire thought and examination of one's beliefs. My only complaint: the binding needs to be sturdier - I'm on my second copy in three years!

She's Come Undone - book cover picture

This was the first of Oprah's selections that I actually liked!! Wally Lamb manages to capture the true flavor of human suffering, triumph and feeling in a story that is fantastic in that it tells us so much about the characters through such mundane activities as watching t.v. or eating a meal. I really felt like I knew Dolores by the end of the book and felt she had really come full circle, etching out a life for herself that was by no means perfect, but certainly the best she had ever experienced. A real story of hope no matter what. I loved it and will recommend it to friends.

The Stand - book cover picture

It's been years since I read this book, but it still is one of the best I've ever read. King transcends his typical 'let's create monsters' formula to pen an epic story of human nature. Is there anyone who hasn't considered what would happen to society after such an appocolyptic event? The character of Nick was beautifully drawn. I still feel the pain over what happens to that character. Read this book. It's not quite like anything else I've read
