The Way We Lived Then : Recollections of a Well-Known Name Dropper - book cover picture

I loved this book. My only disappointment is that it ended and I didn't want it to. I wanted more photos and more stories. Dominick Dunne is my top favorite writer and I read all that he writes. In this book, he tells of his family - the happiness and the tragedy through pictures and prose - mingled with his fabulous party days as a Hollywood insider who knew many of the rich and famous. He has felt pain in the most tragic way - the murder of his beloved daughter and a divorce from the love of his life. I wish I could meet him in person as he is surely to be a fascinating man.

Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy (The Children of the Red King, Book 3) - book cover picture

Ok, im going to star by saying The Invisible Boy is the best installment yet in the children of the red king series. first of all, don't even look at the summary of the book that amazon.com provided, none of it is true. NONE ZERO ZIP ZILCH! None of it so dont bother reading it. i mean, how could the yewbeam sisters try to marry amy bone unless they're lesbians? overall, this book is an amazing piece of work by jenny nimmo; if she was at bloors, she'd be in the drama department no question. However if you haven't read the first 2 books get reading because there is a slim chance you will understand the third book without reading the first two books. THIS BOOK ROX

True storys about the 'new economy'

Net Slaves: True Tales of Working the Web - book cover picture

Every single word is absolutely true. If you want to know something about living and working in the new economy you have to read these "job descriptions". And these sometimes sad real life storys are not only related to the states but also happen in europe. I really liked the writing style of the authors Bill and Steve, they've got kind of an ironically speach but easily get back down to the issue. This book is not a helper for starting work in the web world, but a very good self reflection and everybody else: have a good laugh!

Foucault's Pendulum - book cover picture

this book is tough, i'll give you that. my college friend challenged me to read it - i'll give you five bucks if you finish and give me a brief synopsis, he said. well, i finished it, and it was pretty gratifying. let's just say, though, that this shouldn't be on my summer reading list...haha. the "scary stuff" to which i referred is about the review above me. i quote: "For once, a writer expects his reader's to have a brain." isn't it nice when all of a book reader's have a brain? jeez. i have a feeling he read this book with a dictionary next to him.

Excellent book! Cool ending

Book title: Hannibal

Hannibal - book cover picture

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed understanding some of the motives behind Lecter's behavior. I wasn't all that fond of the gory descriptions of cannabalism but hey, that's Harris. I unlike alot of people enjoyed the ending. Come on, it was going to happen somehow, why not with a little brainwashing. Hannibal is a very unconventional fairy tale with the monster as the unconventional "hero". It was worth the wait hopefully it isn't the last book with our favorite doctor. Just hope we don't have to wait as long and hopefully there will be a movie. I have to say as a work of psychological horror it ranks up there with Dostoevsky. Harris marvelous job!

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly - book cover picture

Reading this brought back memories, both good and bad from my earlier days in the restaurant field. Rising early in the dark morning hours to stand in front of a prep sink picking spinach to deveining 200 pounds of shrimp for Mother's day. This book goes into the back door stories that many a patron might want to know. Ever been to a place where the bathroom stank and was a total mess? The kitchen probably isn't far off! The stories ring true and the lifestyle is one I will never forget. Only the strong will survive and after reading the accounts of his various restaurants I can luckly say, I have survived.Very good book, easy to read, and hard to put down. This is a must for your budding chef or chef wanna be. Just be careful to whom you give the book. The details get spicy, raunchy and vulgar, but then again, that's many a kitchen for you.Spice up your life.

Room to Grow : Twenty-two Writers Encounter the Pleasures and Paradoxes of Raising Young Children - book cover picture

As my daughter grew from a baby to a toddler, I found myself as confused about parenting books as I was about her clothing size. No books seemed to fit my needs: I no longer wanted the "new parent hand holding" books, but I didn't feel ready to approach this new stage without the comfort I've always derived from reading thoughtful -- and thought-provoking -- essays about personal experiences similar to my own. When a friend told me about "Room To Grow" I was relieved; when I started to read the essays, I was ecstatic. This book was exactly what I was looking for: smart, moving pieces about the kind of parenting issues the parenting books ignore. I am certain I'll come back to this book again and again as my daughter grows older. Every parent should know about this collection.

Cutthroat - book cover picture

In this one we start out with a Canadian judge being assassinated. We take a peak in on Custer's last stand. Then we flip around to Hong Kong. Some Canadian mountie named William Blake tracks down an Indian named Ironchild (I think that's his name...can't remember off the top of my head). There is some kind of intrigue going on with a Hong Kong pharmacy company and its owners, the Kwan family. And you know the real amazing thing? All this stuff ties together and makes perfect sense by the novel's conclusion. Slade truly is a master.

The Oracle book I had hoped to find!

Oracle PL/SQL 101 - book cover picture

As a beginning Oracle student, I've looked through many shelves of Oracle books, trying to find just one that was not dry, written in an encyclopedic fashion, with too little explanation to even get a hook in the topic, much less understand it. This book is written in a friendly style -- as though Christopher Allen is right there talking to you. It has the technical information, but also plenty of explanations to tie it all together. I enrolled in an Introductory Oracle class that uses books published by Oracle. The instructor recommended this book the first night of class and I'm glad I bought it. I highly recommend it!

Ella Enchanted (Newbery Honor Book) - book cover picture

I really enjoyed reading this book. It has all the things i look for in a book, it has adventure, it has a lot of weird creatures, its very imaginative, and it has a little bit of romance. When I read this book I thought wow, I wonder how it would feel like to live in those weird places with giants and strange creatures. Though I thought it was a little confusing, I really go confused trying to figure out the names of the creatures. I really liked how Lucinda learned her lesson at the end and used small magic and how Ella took her curse away for the sake of Char. I think my favorite part in the book was when Char asked Ella to marry him but she couldnt say anything and the curse was broken. I think the only thing i hated about this book was Hattie, Olive, and Dame Olga.
