Fantastic - I couldn't put it down!

The Last Hostage (Last Hostage) - book cover picture

Little did I know... When I was told by a relative that this was a "must read" book and that I wouldn't be able to put it down I thought, "sure, we'll see about that." Well, they were 100% correct. I could NOT put the book down. By the time Airbridge 90 took off, I was completely hooked and wondered what would happen next. I found the storyline intriguing and found myself silently cheering for the anti-hero as I flew through the pages. What a wild ride... or should I say flight? <g>

Its just a book! !! but a hilariously sad one worth reading

I Don't Know How She Does It - book cover picture

Some reviewers seem to be taking this book way too seriously or personally. Either you get it/enjoy it or you don't. I thought the humor was great- and yes, over the top. Some of the "nasty" remarks about stay at home mothers were hilariously outrageous and (of course!) ludicrous (what some working mothers in their most hysterical, deranged moments fantasize think things are like on the other side of the fence- no need to get defensive!) This book isn't written for stay at home moms, it is written for frantic-working-outside-the-home moms (is that the politically correct phrasing?) If you are as pursued by guilt, driven by competition, and as frantic with perfectionism as the FICTIONAL character is you may find something to think about.

Different, and amazing

Book title: Blindness

Blindness - book cover picture

This book is a tough read, and it is important to know that going in. Saramango uses long sentences, long paragraphs, and ignores punctuation (especially quotation marks). There were times when I had to go back and re-read passages because I completely lost who was talking. With all of the difficulty...this is probably the most amazing book I have read in a long time. The story is original. The characters are strong, vibrant, and alive. It made me think about human nature, about our society, and about how shaky civiliation really is. (akin to Lord of the Rings) I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read something new, and different. The nobel prize Saramango won was well deserved, and if you read this book you will see why.

The Last Silk Dress - book cover picture

This book is defiantly one of Rinaldi's best books yet. I'd say it's my favorite so far. It is mainly about a fourteen year old girl, Susan Chimark, that has a crazy mother. She meets up with her older brother, that her family never speaks of, and becomes closer to him. Susan after awhile reliezes what the south is really fighthing for. She then has to find out how to let go of her past, and she does find a way...

A Great Book!!

The Mists of Avalon - book cover picture

This is the only book by Marion Zimmer Bradley I have read so far. I truly enjoyed it. The book holds a special place on my shelf, as will the others that I have begun. Ms. Bradley spun a realistic and believable world of sorcery, with characters that are very lifelike. I was entranced by the words, and would read for hours on end! I recommend this book to all fantasy fans, whether your also a fan of Authurian legend or not, if only for the wonderful storytelling.

This is a very good book for starting a Bible study that is labor intensive versus study intensive. I do recommended this for all people to lead after they have to a personal study with Celebration of Discipline materials. To my knowledge, this version is out of print because it has been revised and replaces by ISBN 0062516264. This new book includes the sixth tradition of incarnationalism. Also recommended.

A Beautiful Book

Book title: The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro

The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro - book cover picture

McGinnis shares his awakening to the game of soccer towards the beginning of this book. It was his description of that dawning obsession that drew me in as it somewhat mirrors my own. What I love about this book is the many nice small things. Bits about the players. Insights into the tactics. Background on the cities of Serie B. The general sweep of the story is good, but it's the little moments that make the book. One of my favorites comes when McGinnis serves as referee for an intrasquad game. So much is revealed about the game, about relationships, about honor and about class in such a small space. I didn't find McGinnis participation in the story to be the distraction that some other reviewers did. My one small quibble would be what seems to be an abrupt ending that begs for a postscript. At any rate, I think a non-soccer fan could enjoy this book. I think a soccer fan who enjoys a fine story would love it.

Best Novel About Vampires!

Book title: I Am Legend
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
I Am Legend - book cover picture

I have to say that this book was a pleasant surprise. A nice vacation from reading about the romatic vampire, or the postmodern vampire who is a rockstar and is far too effeminate to take seriously. Matheson's vampire is a filthy corspe who is not quick footed or witted and is basically a zombie only the passion is for blood and not brains. The struggle of the protagonist Neville is both heartfelt and realistic. A great book from beginning to end!

Another One Bites the Grass: Making Sense of International Advertising - book cover picture

Advertising copy too often reads like an AD's afterthought, a state of affairs that has only worsened with the rise of new media. Anholt addresses a seldom-glimpsed corollary: when firms try to break into foreign markets, they often stumble because they rely on workmanlike translations of home office copy. A wealth of amusing but cautionary anecdotes make a very readable argument for investing in writers who understand the new markets intimately and can (re)write copy from the ground up. Required reading for any marketing department with aspirations overseas.
