David Goes To School - book cover picture

I recenctly checked this book out of the library for my 2 year old. She loves David's teacher always saying," no david !" We also love the very vivd illustrations depicting David throughout his day. It is a book that kids will find an easy read in and also laughter while relating to David. As a parent you will delight in hearing your child request this story again and again, and will read it just to see the teacher say, "Good Job David."

"I was born in a small town..."

Book title: Empire Falls
Rating: 5/5

Empire Falls - book cover picture

Ok, first with the criticisms:
Yes, some developments are overdone and can be seen coming a mile away. And it's also true that the book is wordy and complex. Finally, the ending does disappoint just a bit.Nonetheless, this book rocks! I read Russo's "Straight Man" a few years ago and enjoyed it, but it wasn't a book that stayed with me. "Empire Falls" will stay with me because the characters just ring so true.I am another reviewer who grew up in a small town and left for college in the city. Unlike Miles, I never went back (except to visit briefly). I'm from Montana, but it seems a small town is a small town.An author who can create so many fleshed-out, believable characters is something rare. I give this book my highest recommendation.Oh, and I also loved "The Corrections," though many reviewers seem to view the two novels as an "either-or" proposition. Both are great books about people who feel real.

The Flight of the Romanovs: A Family Saga - book cover picture

This is a lively, well-written and informative book on a subject not really well-covered in other works on the last days of the Russian Empire. Occasionally, the plethora of patronymics becomes confusing, but the authors have kindly listed everyone with family connections on a chart in the front. That's of great help to the reader. Anyone interested in early twentieth century Imperial Russian history will appreciate this book very much.

With the growth of literature on goddess religion in recent years, it is easy to compare Stone's achievement with that of those who have stood on her shoulders. Originally published more than 20 years ago, it has remained steadily in print since, in great part because of its accessibility to the lay audience. Although some of the material in her book has since been superceded, this remains an important and exciting book.

Goldy Bear is not only a great character, but about the only inspiration since Christmas for getting out into the kitchen and whipping up something great from a new recipe! The character Goldy is a hoot with her stubborn inquisitiveness. A Jessica Fletcher with a twist, she always is around when there's trouble, or vice versa. She is an every day *real* woman that readers can identify with even when her situations are unreal. You'll want to hold her hand to help her through her problems (and a plate of her brownies would be great too!) A fun turn into the world of mystery. Put on a pot of coffee and curl up with your favorite sweets while you *whip* through Goldy's adventure

Wonderful Adventure that captivates

Book title: Byzantium

Byzantium - book cover picture

Purely becasue I have not checked I am not sure about the accuracy of all that is mentioned in the book but I am sure some research went in to it and the book gives you no reason to doubt it, which is what a good book does. It keeps you captivated and attentive to details but not really concerned about their validity. However, the historical details make this a more interesting story. The story weaves together the different worlds that existed around the same time in different parts of the world through Aedans fantastic journey from Ireland to his captivity by vikings to Byzantium and further yet into the arabic world. It has at times a humours and accepting way to describe differences in culture and lifestyle. I loved this book. It was well written and kept me wanting to pick it up again each time my lunch hour was over and I had to stop until the next day's lunchtime.

Send me to the Hyperion Universe and let me there die.

Book title: Rise of Endymion

Rise of Endymion - book cover picture

Well, I've read so many novels but never something of this sort like the Hyperion saga; strong characters, impressive, very good structured, not to mention that the author made use of almost all future technology principles and guess what ?? Everything just fall great in place from hyper jumps using the Void That Binds to time manipulation. The end was very sad to me although it's not a reason to pull off a star (or even a piece of a star) from the rating. All in all: I'm afraid I will never read something that good like Hyperion (all parts !!) and will never be impressed by any other universe like that I've seen in Hyperion. I loved Aenea and Raul Endymion, Rachel and Fedmahn Kassad, and all other characters.

A superb and cogent introduction for interested laymen

Book title: The Presocratics
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Presocratics - book cover picture

This is a fine book on an important topic. My only caveat: it is somewhat dated by now. Still it is very well-done. Wheelwright first clearly outlines a conceptualization of religion that explains the sky vs. earth religion dichotomy better than any introductory text I have ever seen. He explains the evolution of early Greek philosophy from religion in a succinct and non-verbose way, and then in the bulk of the book he treats each pre-Socratic philosopher and philosophical school carefully, clearly, and intelligently, with a minimum of twentieth-century nonsense mixed in. He uses plenty of fragments to illustrate his points. This is a really lovely book. It will perhaps be less-than-useful for a graduate student in Classics but for undergraduates and interested bystanders it will suffice very well as an introduction. Highly recommended. After you read it, however, you will need to read things more recent if you want to pursue the topic.
