When Christ and His Saints Slept - book cover picture

There are times when you wonder why people have to make up stories when history provides such wonderful tales. The events in English history portrayed here are an excellent example of this, and Ms Penman does a wonderful job narrating them.We have the fabulous characters of Steven and Maude, and their seemingly endless conflict, and we meet her son Henry and the wonderful Eleanor of Aquitaine, some of the most remarkable people in history. Ms Penman does a wonderful job in animating them for the modern reader. There are adventures aplenty, like Maud escaping from a castle in a snow storm wrapped in a white cloak, as well as all the richly embroidered details of every day life you expect from a great historical novel.Ms Penman is a great writer, as she showed so well with "The Sunne in Splendour", and this is a great book.

Whatever Happened to Janie? - book cover picture

I absolutely loved this book, the one before it, and the one after it. Mrs. Cooney is one of my favorite authors. She really knows how to make the characters and situations come alive. As I read these books, I felt as if I were there, just watching over everything. I felt as if I totally connected with Janie. The books focus on love, trust, and friendships...the three most important emotions a teenager goes through. I would reccomend this three book mini series to anyone looking to lose themselves in a whole different world.

Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, Book 1) - book cover picture

Wizard's First Rule is a well put together story that will keep you flipping pages to get to the next chapter. I finished this book then moved on to Stone of Tears and am now reading Blood of the Fold. Each book contains themes that will be answered as the books unfold, but each book is complete with a satisfying ending and won't leave you hanging until the next book. I don't know how he does it but these books will make you want to spend more time outdoors instead of sitting in front of the TV. Also, Truth, Honor, and Loyalty and the ability to make hard decisions is a major focal point of these books. So if these things still matter to you, hop on board for a thrilling ride.

A skeptic's skeptic...

Voodoo Science: The Road from Foolishness to Fraud - book cover picture

In a society increasingly dominated by technology and scientific advances, it's difficult for the average citizen to distinguish between developments that are genuine and those that cross the line into foolishness and fraud. Robert Park, a physicist, knows the difference. For over two decades, Park has been the head of the press office of the American Physical Society, and as such, he is often at the front lines of science's response to extraordinary claims and sensational press reports. Park's book beautifully embodies the late Carl Sagan's "art of baloney detection." Whether it's cold fusion, perpetual motion (unlimited energy) machines, Roswell UFOs or homeopathic medicines, Park is brutally direct and occasionally amusing as he directs the razor sharp scrutiny of a skeptical scientist on modern day nonsense. Any person with a modest interest in science should read this book.

A gentle, English comedy-of-manners

Harnessing Peacocks (King Penguin) - book cover picture

"Harnessing Peacocks" is one of my all-time favorite books. In some ways, it's a typical British comedy-of-manners, but with terrific, quirky characters and a gentle, romantic plot.Teenaged Hebe runs away from the home she shares with her grandparents when she overhears them and her bossy older sisters plotting to get her an unwanted abortion. We see her again as her son, Silas, is growing old enough to question his background. His mother has raised him on her own, cooking for wealthy elderly clients and "tarting" (as she calls it) for several selected men, to be able to provide him with the same upbringing she had. She is smart, fiercely independent, and vulnerable (although she doesn't realize it).One of my favorite things about this book is Wesley's wonderfully quirky and complex characters. If you enjoy other authors such as Barbara Pym, Laurie Colwin and Jane Austen, I think you will enjoy this book.

Bravo for Braver

Elixir - book cover picture

I totally enjoyed this exciting, thought provoking novel. It has a "little bit of something" for everyone.
When (not if) this gets made into a movie, I know my husband and I will be first in line. "Elixir" is heavy enough to make you think, while light enough to let you escape from the ordinary, every day routines of life. Woven within a biotech, Sci Fi thriller are many incredible (and anything but Sci Fi) everlasting love stories. I look forward to seeing it become an awesome special FX, blockbuster movie, and I impatiently await future works from Mr. Braver. You have to read this BOOK!

Could Dark Desire live up to the first book of the series..Dark Prince. Could it be possible? A resounding YES! is heard. Ms. Feehan made the perfect sequel. This tale is full of all the ingredients that make a novel stand out. Not least of all a scrumptuous leading male character, Jacques. How can she keep pulling these great books out of her sleeve? Absolutely A Must Read Book

Harris and Me: A Summer Remembered - book cover picture

It started with a giggle at the end of the first five pages and, by the end of Gary Paulsen's first day on the farm with his cousin Harris, I had been thrown out of silent reading for laughing so hard. Don't let me waste anymore of your reading time extolling the virtues of this book--just trust me, it is one hysterical adventure after another. You don't have to like the farm life to relate to the action of this story, you only have to remember what the world was like when you were young and everywhere you went was an adventure just waiting.
As a reading teacher of seventh graders, I have read "Harris and Me" to the most "hardened" of audiences and, without fail, Harris and Gary reduce them to giggling chaos. They even forget to be "cool" and ask for more at the end of the chapter--a true testament to a great book. From grownups to the "think they are grown," this book is a slam dunk...just don't try to read it during silent reading!

George Anderson's Lessons from the Light: Extraordinary Messages of Comfort and Hope from the Other Side - book cover picture

This book is like a gentle massage on the heart and soul of someone who has lost a loved one. There is so much comfort in George Anderson's written words. I have given this book to family, friends - even strangers - and it's given them such peace and comfort. I gave this book to a girlfriend whose mother was dying of cancer and the mother asked to read it. She loved it and when it came her time to pass over, she had a smile on her face. Because of the book, she had no fear of death. This book is an absolute must for anyone who is grieving. And the sooner they read it, the better.

Part 6 in The Green Mile Serialization

The Green Mile: Coffey on the Mile (Green Mile Series) - book cover picture

"Coffey on the Mile" is the longest book in the series (130+ pages), while the other five had averaged approximately 90 pages. In this sixth and final installment in The Green Mile serialization, the true identity of the twins' killer is revealed (though I won't give that away, because it's a shocker). Plus, the killer and Percy Wetmore (the evil prison guard), at last(!), get what they deserve. And as for John Coffey: well, that was just a tear-jerker. I won't give away what happens to him either. You just have to read the series--or just this book, if you want to skip the rest.In the afterword, King points out some of his anachronisms in the series, like whether or not certain radio programs were broadcast in 1932. These "mistakes" were still left in the serial novel, as far as I can tell, even though King had considered removing them. But what was removed was this afterword, as well as the foreword in book #1 ("The Two Dead Girls"); so there were a few things altered by the end.
