Excellent text connecting classical to differential geometry

Geometry from a Differentiable Viewpoint - book cover picture

This book is ideal for those with a long time interest in mathematics or the student just becoming interested in advanced topics. It successfully takes the concepts of classic geometry (Euclidean), clearly explains how the parallel postulate interacts with the other postulates and then introduces differential geometry as a natural outgrowth of hyperbolic geometry. McLeary's book succeeds by demonstrating the connection of modern differential geometry to the concepts in which we were educated. This is not a book for the casual reader, but includes many problems and solutions to the more interesting of them

Excalibur (Warlord Chronicles) - book cover picture

Bernard Cornwell books on Arthur was realistically depicted! I could actually believe there was a person either king or ruler, by the name of Arthur living in the early middle ages. Mr. Cornwell must have done a tremendous research to get the settings, landscrape and history correct! On the first instance I read the paperback edition of the Winter King, I knew it was a gem!! I myself believe Arthur was a man of invisible virtues, who believe all the good in man and stride for the ideal principles. Read Rudyard Kipling's IF poem! Mr. Cornwell acheived this in depicting such an Arthur!!! Excellent work! I must say that I disagree with the other's comments on Excalibur. I think the concluding part was a fitting ending to the story and not at all "rush". Arthur whereabout was left a mystery as such it shoud be!~~~ However, I still like to know what happen to Derfel. Did he perish or die of old age?... Will be eagerly awaiting for your next Saxon books!!!

Peter Bernstein is a classic storyteller.

Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback

I once sat in a meeting with a prospective client who remarked, pointedly, that their business was was in need of someone with an academic orientation to straighten them out. That might seem counter-intuitive to some. But this prospective client was in the investment advisory business. And if you read this book, you'll discover why this comment made sense and who was largely responsible for making it make sense. Peter Bernstein is a classic storyteller. He did omit some significant contributors, but most of the people who made modern Wall Street what it is, their insights, and how they developed them are presented in a heroic light

The author's own voice

Book title: Into Thin Air

Into Thin Air - book cover picture

This is a first hand story of a major climbing catastrophe. It gives a good account of what climbing a major peak is like, the dynamics of the group and the forces that influence the trek organizers. Krakauer is an excellent writer, more than a journalist, several very personal themes run through the entire work, and having the author read the book to you aloud in his own voice makes it more direct and compelling.
This is the only recorded book that I have ever listened to through from start to finish. It was a two day drive from
Carson City Nevada to Southern Baja California. I just bought another copy for a friend who has never listened to a recorded book for more than a few minutes and I thought this would be a great first one, like it was for me.

I don't think I can add much to the many reviews that have been written about this book. Caroline Alexander has captured the determination of the sailors, as well as the foreboding of the sea and ice. I've never felt so completely transported by a book before, and often found myself shivering as I read it. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this book. I plan to give it to many friends and relatives as presents.

Who's Afraid of C++? (Who's Afraid of) - book cover picture

-An excellent guide to computer programming in general, and thebasics of the C++ language in particular. Detailed descriptions of theinteraction between computer hardware and software at the beginning of the book prepare the reader for a more thorough understanding of memory management in program design. Much of the book consists of dialog between the author and a novice programmer. The novice's questions and the author's replies serve to further illuminate concepts which at first may be hard to grasp. In effect, the reader is helped by not being "the only student." A CD-ROM is included which includes a compiler for DOS systems, and the code examples from the book. The reader is thus able to get some "hands-on" experience as well.

Best book!!!

PHANTOM - book cover picture

this book was the best thing I've ever read- also the saddest. And, as all my friends know, I read quite a bit of books, so if I say that this is very good, they know that it was. I fell in love with THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA ever since I heard(not saw) the musical in fifth grade. Well, now I'm in seventh. I own the CD of PHANTOM I own the novel by Gaston Leroux, and I'm hoping that I will soon own the novel by Susan Kay, which is by far the best and saddest PHANTOM thing existing. This was a book for all ages, but mainly for kids, so they can learn that sometimes, people may be different, and people who treat them unkindly can scar them for life.

Be Prepared!

Sea Kayaker's Deep Trouble: True Stories and Their Lessons from Sea Kayaker Magazine - book cover picture

If the Boy Scouts ever offer a merrit badge for sea kayaking, this could be their text book. They share the same advice: "be prepared." As a novice sea kayaker I can see how something which can be so easy could lead to overconfidence- getting one into "deep trouble" due to lack of preparation. This book uses a case study method to illustrate how carelessness or lack of knowledge can lead to serious consequenses or death, but simple solutions can make the difference between inconvenience and survival. This book can save lives. It's easy to take for granted such advice as "dress for immersion," "wear your PFD," "keep current on weather reports," or "cary a signaling device," but seeing the results of ignoring such advice drives home the point. After reading this book one will be much better prepared for eventualities, however unlikely they may be.

Notes from a Big Country - book cover picture

Bill Bryson knows America, he was born here, He knows England , he lived there for many years, and Bill Bryson knows how to write satirical sendups on eveything our wonderful (?) culture has to offer. His "Drowning in red tape" offering is so funny it could probably make the Immigration authorities laugh, and that's pretty funny. If you want a good chuckle at the foibles of America, get this book, you'll love it.

Princeton Review: Cracking the AP: English Literature, 1999-2000 Edition (Annual) - book cover picture

I have yet to take the real AP Government test, but after studying with this book and taking a last year's test as a practice, I'm certain I'll do well this year. The book is incredibly efficient; true it does not inform the reader of all the functions of gov~t, but that is not its purpose. It has very little superfluous information, and it seems that nearly everything I read became a question on the practice exam. The only flaw is that it is a little repetitive... it seems like the book provides a basic overview before going into more specific details. Perhaps this caters to both the slacker student and the more prepared student, allowing someone just beginning their studies the day before to at least get a quick review accomplished.
