The Spy Wore Red : My Adventures as as Undercover Agent in World War II - book cover picture

I loved this book. Most importantly, anyone reading it will understand that SOCIALIZING WAS THE JOB Aline Griffith had to do. I was upset to read the Editorial review from the Library Journal where the author of the editorial sneers at the fact that the former Ms. Griffith was socializing so much in Madrid during her assignment. I lived in Madrid thirty five years after the time the Countess recounts. Her account and vivid description unveiled for me a city gone for ever, one however, clearly discernible when I was there. Thank you Countess de Romanones for this wonderful treat!

Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II - book cover picture

As non-native speaker of the japanese language, I am amazed at the amount of research that Dower must have completed for this title in the sphere of japanese documents and other reference materials that native japanese themselves rarely open.
As a native english speaker, I am thoroughly impressed with his application of that language to a non-fiction subject. The most complex situations are regularly rolled up in a single sentence. The progression is so smooth that you may not even notice that after (x) pages you've somehow absorbed the level of understanding that a lot of authors would deliver in (x) chapters.

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs - book cover picture

This book might be a good read if you are at the beginning level or have at least ten years of computer experience. Don't read it in an intermediate state. Also it is the type of book that is a great enjoyment for people with idle brainpower. To be a successful professional in the computer field it is not necessary. It maybe even misleading. Here you have to manage solid day-to-day work and not feel like an inventor of a new language.Prerequisites for the book are some interest in philosophy and linguistic and a slight remembrance of a few years of college math.It contains lots of small intellectual gems. Complete explanations of a language interpreter and a compiler are more down to earth.

Martin and John - book cover picture

The first time I came across this book was its chinese version, which I bought for its attractive book cover. It was difficult for me to follow the stories at first, because it isn't a conventional type of fiction, but a group of stories all with the characters named John and Martin. But I was gripped as I read on. The stories are naturalistic and dark. I don't know how much they reflect the truth (I'm a girl, so what do I know?) but they feel real and it's really moving, esp. the part about lover dying of AIDS. I love this book, and I lent it to a friend (who is also a girl) and she liked it too. Of course it is not sitcom, but it is not boring. Most of the book is about the not so happy parts of life, but the people are not feeling miserable about themselves.

Guide to Postproduction for TV and Film: Managing the Process - book cover picture

The Guide to Postproduction for TV and Film: Managing the Process is an excellent resource for anyone working in the entertainment industry. I haven't been able to find another book that so effectively takes you through the nuts and bolts of post production, from scheduling all the way through to delivery. If you are an entertainment executive, a film student, or anywhere in between this book will be an invaluable resource. I've been working in the film and television industry for twelve years and this book has helped me in jobs at two major television networks and in feature post production at several studios. The new edition provides accurate and up to date information and is the only book I've been able to find that adequately covers the film laboratory. The Guide is the one book I always have at my desk. I strongly recommend it.

Timeless advice for the 21st Century

Rating: 5/5

The Richest Man in Babylon - book cover picture

Set in ancient Babylon, this book is a collection of articles written in the 1920's and 30's. Although the writing style may seem dated to modern readers, the advice is as true now as ever.

Each story teaches a lesson on a valuable point, many of which we've all heard before, (pay yourself first, pay your bills on time, etc) but presents these points in a way that they are more easily taken to heart. As you follow the characters in these tales, it is easy to think of examples of how you can apply these principals in your own life.

Following the principals of this book can help anyone become financially secure.

Lord of Chaos (The Wheel of Time, Book 6) - book cover picture

This book is great, it has every thing you want from the Wheel of Time series but it is a little slow in some parts, possibly a little forshadowing of the next three books to come. While I enjoy the Wheel of Time series including the newer books (CoS,PoD,WH) I think this is the last of the large volumes that we will see from Robert Jordan. The three that follow this are almost 1/2 to 1/3 the size content wize - they have increased the font size to keep the physical dimensions of the books similar. Either RJ is slowing down in his writing or TOR is cashing in on the popularity and chopping the books into smaller bits.
