Alanna (Song of the Lioness (Hardcover)) - book cover picture

Never judge a book by it's cover. This is an amazingly told story about a younge girl who trades lives with her twin brother to fulfil her dream about becoming a knight. The charecters are beautifuly laided out, desricbed , and expressed. All:The First Adventure is a fantasy based book. It does have some facts about knights and battle etc. because I love stories with magic in them, I wsa disopointed that it had only a little heere and there. But I regained that lose later on in the story. This beautiful well written story is only book one of the series. Read it and enjoying being swept into a land where knights still roam.

An Enchanting Delight!

Book title: My Father's Dragon : (Gift Edition; Newbery Honor Book)

My Father's Dragon : (Gift Edition; Newbery Honor Book) - book cover picture

Hoorah! Hoorah! A fanciful story of adventure, friendship, cleverness, inginuity and resourcefulness that toddlers, grade schoolers and adults can all enjoy together. I homeschool children of various ages and it is hard to find read aloud books that capture the interest and imagination of them all. This one is a true winner! Even my three year old was enthralled! The story is thought provoking enough to be a great spring board for discussion with older children, yet endearing enough for little ones to stand up and cheer about. This is a treasured part of our library. Even if you don't have kids, this is a quick and easy "must read". You don't have to be a child to love this book...only young (and adventurous) at heart!

The Viscount Who Loved Me - book cover picture

The synopses already presented will give you a good idea of the story line, so I won't duplicate comments. But I must say, this is one of the absolutely best written novels I've ever spent time with. Quinn's style is smooth, stylish, in vogue of the times for which it was written without being laden, and witty. Her story line in this novel is fresh, interesting, believable and very well paced. Nowhere did the story drag. And I loved the author's note at the very end. Having written six novels myself, I did indeed enjoy that one. Highly recommended.

Book title: Garfield Beefs Up : His 37th Book (Garfield)

Garfield Beefs Up : His 37th Book (Garfield) - book cover picture

Okay, there's not many days left until Xmas but let me assure you that this Garfield book makes an excellent last-minute gift. Everyone I know loves Garfield and would be thrilled at getting a book like this. It's rather thick and taller than usual. Plus it's in full color. As long as I can remember I've loved reading Garfield, even when I was a little kid reading the black and white pocket books. So kids will appreciate this too. Trust me.It opens with 'Garfield's code of Nevers', such as 'Never Eat the Mystery Meat. And ends with 'Garfield's Top Ten Suggestions for New Athletic Events, such as 'The Fridge Lift' and 'Eat till you Explode'. Crammed inbetween are hundreds of hilarious comic strips. Plus there is information on the last page on how to join the Garfield fan club. And why not?

The Path of Daggers (The Wheel of Time, Book 8) - book cover picture

This 8th installment of the Wheel of Time series marked a refreshing change from A Crown of Swords, in that some of the multitude of plot threads are finally starting to come together. Throughout nearly the entire book the story seemed more focused than earlier books in the series, and in classic Jordan fashion the ending leaves you on the edge of your seat and begging for more. All in all, this is probably the best in the series since The Shadow Rising, and definitely worth picking up ASAP.

Quality story telling, a MUST READ

Book title: Hyperion

Hyperion - book cover picture

It has been a very, very long time since I have been able to recommend a sci-fi book to my friends. Hyperion has not only been recommended, but I'm being thanked for letting them know such an amazing book exists. The mixture of Canterbury Tales, Keats poetry and sci-fi worked so well that I found myself reading nonstop. Fortunately I purchased the Fall of Hyperion at the same time so I was able to keep reading. The author clearly understands the struggle people go through to find meaning from their respective religions and meaning in their lives. It is so seldom that an author comes up with a new idea and then crafts a well written story that expresses that idea in a detailed, thoughtful manner. I would give this book more than 5 stars if that were an option.

Book title: Tomas and the Library Lady (Dragonfly Books)

Tomas and the Library Lady (Dragonfly Books) - book cover picture

This is a short story of a boy named Tomas, who needs more stories than his grandfather can tell, and so he goes to the library. Poor, migrant and Hispanic, he finds a friendly, caring librarian who provides him with the books he needs to nurture his spirit. The illustrations are warm and textured, lending a rich (almost biblical) quality. The experiences of Tomas, and his fertile imagination, are easily recognizable to children of all ages. The historical note on his later success in life is added incentive to keep going to the library for good books, like this one!

The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide - book cover picture

If you know the entire dialogue to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and have a propensity for science fiction, buy this book! An appreciation for british humor is a must. The science fiction is a bit less accurate than the "Red Dwarf" series, but still immensely humorous. If this interests you at all, spend the extra money and get all of the books in one! Once you read the first book in the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", you will want to read them all. And for the price, you cannot get a better deal than this book.

Wonderfully addictive series of historical novels

Book title: Sharpe's Eagle (#2) (Sharpe's Adventures)
Rating: 5/5

Sharpe's Eagle (#2) (Sharpe's Adventures) - book cover picture

I love the Sharpe books. I'm amazed that Cornwell can be so prolific (in addition to the dozens of books in the Sharpe series, he's written novels on the American Civil War and early Britain) and produce books that are always spellbinding and entertaining. The history appears to be very accurate and well researched. He even visits and walks the battlefields before writing. Sharpe's Eagle is a good one. Of course, you have to get into these books with the understanding that they're violent (as war always is) and that Richard Sharpe is a pretty ruthless fellow, at least when it comes to disposing of his enemies on the British side. It is this violent and ruthless nature that makes Sharpe a successful (you might say amazing) soldier.
