This is amazing...I love Sparhawk...Although we're led to believe that he's not all that great looking, I disagree. At first he doesn't seem all that likeable, but all things take time. I fell immediately in love with Kalten, Sparhawk's boyhood friend, probably because he uses his brain only when he absolutely HAS to. He's so loveable though! Faran, Sparhawk's horse is just like his owner, and is the greatest as well. Sephrenia and Vanion are both amazing, and you begin to have suspicions about how they really look at one another. Sparhawk comes back to Cimmura from a 10 year exile, only to find his queen deathly ill, and encased in crystal to save her life. As long as the crystal is in place, Ehlana is safe, but she would die if she was out of the crystal for a single day. Sparhawk sets out to save his queen's life, and Sephrenia informs him that he is the only person in the world who can do it. We follow sparhawk's journey with comedy and peril.

We Were Soldiers Once... and Young: Ia Drang--The Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam - book cover picture

Easily the best Vietnam War book written. Probably the most personal account of battle from the perspective of the individual soldier. Hal Moore and Joe Galloway avoid the temptation to add to the politics of this war and simply write a stunning, frightening, inspiring story of common men fighting for each other and their own survival. Beyond the striking descriptions of close battle, this book provides an interesting perspective of how the Army adopted the use of helicopters as air cavalry and air mobile operations. I'm a career military officer and avid military history reader and haven't found another book like it - I routinely recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel battle in all its elements. In my top 5 all time best military history books. If you like this book, read "With the Old Breed" about the Marines in WWII Pacific.

The Forbidden Zone - book cover picture

I had my doubts about this one before I started it, thinking that the author would obviously know the Russian way of life as well as anyone, but would no doubt relate that knowledge in a clumsy writing style. I'm thrilled to say I was totally wrong! This thriller was as well-written as it was entertaining, and it gave as accurate a picture of the old Soviet Union as I'm sure is available in any novel. This is escapist fare at its best, because the setting is in a place that few outsiders have experienced first hand, and Hetzer does a first-rate job in making every scene exciting. The author himself wrote on this site that he has always been a fan of espionage fiction like that of Ludlum, and he outdoes his idol here with his treatment of the locales making Ludlum's seem like cardboard cutouts. I loved this book.

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. (The Pennyroyal Edition as designed and illustrated by Barry Moser) - book cover picture

Frankenstein the most recognizable title in fiction and yet the most neglected. Yes, the movies are fun but the novel is so important I'm surprised it isn't required reading for say, senior high school English. The issues it raises and explores include the paradoxical connections between life and birth and death. It examines relationships, the concept of "parenting", motherhood, sex and procreation. The world of nature and the man-made world, responsibility and knowledge, what makes us human. M.Shelly was only nineteen when she wrote it but she had suffered several miscarriges and the death of her baby by that time. The issues she writes about in Frankenstein must have been haunting her for some time. Almost two hundred years later this book has never been more relevant, and Frankenstein and his creation have become part of the popular consious. It's too bad the book's gotten pushed aside by movies, comics, etc.

A Suitable Boy : Novel, A - book cover picture

Being an Indian of Hindu- Muslim parentage myself I loved and cherished the two cultures so beautifully intertwined across Seth's book. My heart was moved by the pathos of Seth's feelings for Indian culture- which is neither Hindu nor Muslim. It made me proud to be an Indian and also reinforced feelings- the Holi recital by the Moslem Saeeda Bai is so characteristic of all that is India- I wish more people could understand what Seth is trying ot get across here. The parting of Lata from her Kabir ( named on one of the great Secular Bhakti saints of India) is characteristic of the forced division of the Indian heart. But one can Thank God for the fact that India's soul still remains intact. I hope more Seths come out of this country which has generated so much beauty along with creating myself.

Brazen Virtue - book cover picture

I really enjoyed this book.
In true Nora Roberts style, we are kept on the edge of our seat wanting to know who the 'bad guy' is. What a surprise at the end. I appreciated how the two main characters are thrown together in a situation far beyond their expectations. The sparks between Grace and Ed are electric. Grace is her own woman not afraid to do what she thinks needs to be done to find her sister's murderer. Ed is a cop through and through. What a combination.Wonderful.

Outlaw Mountain: A Joanna Brady Mystery - book cover picture

If I want hilarious mystery, I read Janet Evanovich, Jennifer Crusie and Donna Andrews. If I want tough, futuristic SciFi mystery, I read J.D Robb. But when I want sun-drenched easy-going mystery I turn to the Joanna Brady mysteries. This new one is the fastest moving and most likable: good suspense, real-life characters and the great continuing story of Joanna and Butch. I read such fast-moving stuff, it's nice to slow down and bake in the Arizona sun for awhile. Read this series from the beginning - it gives you a true appreciation of each new one.

I originally bought this book for reference, but discovered that Strunk&White's delightful work is also an excellent cover-to-cover read. I strongly recommend it for anyone who loves language as much as I do.For anyone who writes, in any capacity, PLEASE read this book before sending out a single manuscript, and preferably, before even typing a single word. Your editors or employers, and definitely your readers, will thank you.As for me, I still haven't consigned this book to the shelf. I prefer to keep it on my bedside table, a pocket-sized talisman to keep me safe and sound in a world of lousy writing.

Nocturnes for the King of Naples - book cover picture

This book, in order to be fully experienced, should be read very slowly. White is a master of sensual description. You should visualize the images and forget about plot and character. If you let your mind linger over the words you can experience the novel with all of your senses. The atmosphere is almost tangible. The variations are stunning.I must say that reading this book after having read 4 other White novels I was prepared. If you jump right in you can easily become lost or disoriented. Maybe that is part of the author's wishes. I read an interview where he commented that unlike the 19th Century novel where the reader is given a roadmap and a clear view, this book requires the reader to work and make connections. If you do persevere you will be rewarded with a haunting series of visions that will not readily be forgotten.

This book is simply excellent for any beginner. I had no coding experience whatsoever and I could still learn a lot from this book and do things like scientific computing and even beginning a software project.Of course, python is an easy language some would say. Nevertheless, I truly believe this is a must have for anyone who like me doesn't know about prgramming and wants to learn to use an easy language that could do a lot!Kudos for the creator of the language and the authors of this book.In no time, you will be ble to programm something useful.
