Blood and Vengeance : One Family's Story of the War in Bosnia - book cover picture

Chuck Sudetic has written an excellent book which weaves the experiences of one family in the Serbian conflict with the Muslims Bosnia into the larger political and social context of violence and aggression. The book is a page turner, written in a very engaging journalistic style. The author's criticism of Muslim and Serb atrocities alike appears balanced, and his anger at the failures of politicians and peacekeepers shines clear. The experiences of the Celik family make the massacres and assassinations very real, the reader will be riveted as to the welfare of each family member as they try to escape the violence. The reader will find that the book gives them an excellent overview of the conflict both in the experiences of individuals and in the political and military decision making.

Ghost Soldiers: The Forgotten Epic Story of World War II's Most Dramatic Mission - book cover picture

My father, Raymond Glasgow, was not on this raid, but he was on other Ranger liberations. I wanted so much to have some means to convey to our children what it was like in the South Pacific in WWII. This book is excellent for a family heritage. Like most vets who were there, my dad recalled events for us only rarely, and those disclosures were few. This book depicts for our children and grandchildren what it was like. Thanks so much to Mr. Sides for providing us a family treasure.

You Can't Catch Death : A Daughter's Memoir - book cover picture

In an effort to reconcile memories, dreams and fears with real life, Ianthe Brautigan writes of her life with father, Richard Brautigan. After he took his own life in 1984, she was left with memories and what-ifs. This book is her journey into remembering and discovering her father and his life. Within the pages of this book lies a healing journey, back to the terrible drinking times, back to the grandmother she never knew, back to treasured morinings at her father's San Francisco apartment, and other times shared with her father. Photos capture the fragments of that life, and let us glimpse again at the shy, wild-haired Brautigan. Somewhere in facing down deamons and fears of this past life, I feel she somehow reclaims her own life and is no longer afraid of the future. This book had a powerful impact on me. The story of a daughter trying to gather the pieces of her life and to set them out to study, is a portrait of courage and grace.

A great second novel

Heart of a Champion (Avon Camelot Books (Paperback)) - book cover picture

Although not as original as his first novel, "On the Devil's Court," Carl Deuker has produced an excellent second novel in "Heart of a Champion." Darker in tone due to the death of the narrator's father, the alcoholism addressed in the book, and the ending, "Heart of a Champion" is also one of the best baseball novels I've ever read. The friendship between Seth and Jimmy is gripping, especially for those of us who have had friends more talented than we are. I read this novel in a single sitting, and found much the same sense of tension throughout the novel: if you love baseball, you're not going to be able to put this one down either.

I have to admit, it was pretty intense reading at that time in my life, but I became hooked.I have read several other fantasy writers, but Robert Jordan has become my favorite. Confessions (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

Anyone interested in Theology or morality will truly find Augustine's Confessions to be worthy of all its centuries of acclaim. I am a Protestant Christian, and I found his story of conversion to be both moving and relevant to my own life. I would say this book is a must for Christians. A warning: the concepts are deep and require effort to understand - this is not a light read. It is, however, undoubtedly worth the time and energy necessary. The intellectual, philosophical, and spritual rigor of this text will enlighten the mind and prick the heart.

this series has hit its stride

Book title: Death Du Jour
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Death Du Jour - book cover picture

I really enjoyed Dead du Jour. It's a classic multi-murder mystery with a smart, interesting female protagonist. Brennan is a forensic anthropologist who is a professor in North Carolina and who works for the police in Canada. The setting changes between Canada and North Carolina, which gives a nice variety of outside influences on the plot (ice storms in Canada, a swampy monkey island in NC). There is a love angle between Brennan and a Canadian detective, Ryan (Will they or won't they?!) There is an interesting subplot about the bones of a nun that the Church wants Brennan to dig up and analyze. If you read the first novel in the Brennan series, you will certainly like this novel--it's even better. Brennan gets along with people better in this novel, there is the love interest with Ryan, and the annoying Claudel from the first novel is barely in this story. After reading this book, you'll want to go and get the next book in the series.

The Happy Hocky Family - book cover picture

A beginning reader can have a hard time slogging through the "See Jane Run" books. Take a break with this book! From the first page to the last, this book just keeps on getting funnier. Believe it or not it has plenty of irony, satire, and even plain and simply belly laughs, and all done with only a beginners vocabulary list. Unfortunately, the cover is not too enticing, and you may be tricked into skipping over this book. But go ahead and dive right in. You will be glad you did.
