The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - book cover picture

Poor, poor Arthur Dent. One day, the man is leading a so-called "normal" life, working, drinking, and just generally minding his own business. Then one moment later, everything he has known to be true no longer is so. He discovers that his best friend, Ford Prefect, is even stranger than he previously thought. The hitchhiking alien is about to take Arthur on the most amazing, not to mention life-saving, journey of his life through space and time. All this trouble is because some Vogons had been assigned to demolish planet Earth, which coincidentally, was also simply minding its own business.

Genius Douglas Adams tells of Arthur's travels with a "cast" of hilariously absurd characters, like Marvin, the paranoid android, and Zaphod Beeblebrox, the president/most-wanted fugitive of the galaxy.

The Long Patrol (Redwall, Book 10) - book cover picture

This is the greates Redwall book to ever come out. The beginning has a young hare called Tammo who runs away from home to as the book suggests, fight with the long patrol, comprised of elite fighting hares. He dashes off with the squirrel, Russa Nodrey, and has many adventures. However, as always, there is a evil warlord that is trying to become the ruler of the world. This warlord is none other then the greatrat Damug Warfang. WIth a thousand at his back, he plans to kill, plunder, and conquer. It is up to Tammo and the long patrol to stop this great army from reaching the gates of Redwall. Meanwhile, at Redwall, the south wall is collapsing! This book is, as i have already said, my favorite one in the whole series. It has action, and the riddles that are famous of Jacques.

Movement, Stability and Low Back Pain: The Essential Role of the Pelvis - book cover picture

This book brings together the greatest amount of current clinical and basic science information on the importance of the pelvis, and particularly, the sacroiliac joints, and their relation to low back pain. The traditional medical model has assumed for years that only spinal structures, such as the discs and facet joints, are important in low back pain syndrome. This book clearly identifies the role of the sacroiliac joints in producing low back pain and provides information on both conservative and surgical treatment.

Mrs. Merriwether's Musical Cat - book cover picture

My own piano students have enjoyed reading about Mrs. Merriweather's musical cat. I love how the author portrays the piano teacher in this book. Mrs. Merriwether lives an ordinary life, except on Tuesdays, when she teaches her three piano students. Each student brings his/her own special personality and challenge to the lesson. The pictures are hilarious. When a cat comes into Mrs. Merriweather's studio, somehow the students are playing better, and the crabby neighbor is happier too!The surprise ending will delight cat-lovers as well as music-lovers.If you are a piano teacher, or your child takes piano lessons, this book is a must-read!Happy reading!

Haroun and the Sea of Stories - book cover picture

This book was recommended to me by a friend from Bombay who knew I was a Rushdie fan. In fact, she lent me her personal copy and was extremely upset when I didn't return it for several weeks. Although I have been assured that a better understanding of Hindu mythology improves reading of the book considerably, don't let that caviat stop you -- this is a wonderful story and it is marvelously written -- truely Rushdie at his best.

Undaunted Courage - book cover picture

I don't really consider myself much of a history buff, so I thought it would be hard to "get through" this book. But to my surprise I absolutely loved it! The story is so compelling, and Ambrose does an excellent job of leading us along on the expedition. It has opened up a new world for me, and really sparked an interest in Lewis' time period. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Kirkus is full of it

Book title: Deerskin
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Deerskin - book cover picture

Apparently, the Kirkus review is uncomfortable with the subject of rape. This book is about rape; not an "ordinary" rape, but an incestuous, violent, abusive rape.Actually, the book is about Lissar's recovery from her father's abuse. Details are given in other reviews, so I won't give them again. It is fantastic. You find yourself so involved with Lissar that you wonder at your own memory; whether it is whole or if you have spots you don't remember as she does. She is an all-encompassing character.Kirkus complained of nebulous kingdoms and faceless characters...personally, I think McKinley left them that way on purpose showing the universalness of the character and the situation. Only those who hide from reality can deny that such things happen to people every single day.It was outstanding, wonderful, involving and unique. I highly, highly reccomend it.

Courage of a child

Book title: Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes - book cover picture

I read this book to my third graders as a kick off to our unit on Japan. The author's word choice makes it a beautiful book to read aloud. Her use of figurative language gives the children a vivid mental picture of Japanese things that they may not be familiar with in the United States. The book is wonderful in how it shows hope and courage in the true stoy of a little girl fighting for her life. My students were able to relate to many things in the story since Sadako is fairly close to their age. I believe this story taught my students that not all great books have happy endings. We were fortunate enough to go and view a performance of Sadako at our local Performing Arts Center. What a great opportunity to compare and contrast the book and the performance! My students saw first hand how authors/artists use artististic license to put their own twist on a story.

Temple of the Winds (Sword of Truth, Book 4) - book cover picture

I have not even finished reading Temple of The Winds and already I think it is Goodkind's best book. This book brings new heights to character and plot development. Temple of the Winds is permeated with a anxious hopelessness that gives a sense of great urgency to everything that happens. You never know what will happen next, the Light is always in danger of being overwhelmed by the Dark but not quite; DON'T MISS IT!
