The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

Some of the reviews on this page say that readers past adolescence should skip "Catcher." No! I am 25 and I just read it over the holiday. Never before have I finished a book, put it down, and thought -- "I want to read that again." So I did! Yes, many of Holden's observations are specific to adolescence -- but many of his problems dealing with society are universal. I often find myself stuck between doing what "polite society" requires, and what I'd just rather do myself. Also, anyone who thinks Holden is a "bad person" is way off base. Holden's problem is that he is too decent for the world.

Into the Wild - book cover picture

This book grabbed a hold of me, shook my emotions around and then placed me back down to earth wondering what just took place....that was my adventure. I simply loved this book..and read it in one night. Chris' story is both amazing and makes you wonder what made this bright kid tick and why he would trade a traditionally comfortable life to chase the (more) fiction (than non-fiction) of Jack London and/or Therou. What is even more interesting is how close he came to making it Either way, its a great read. As an aside, I actually wrote the author, Krakauer b/c the book moved me so, and he responded w/ a hand-written postcard answering my questions.,,....seems like a class/regular guy...I was very impressed. Anyway, I hope you like it....

Wonderful.....something everone should read

Book title: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) - book cover picture

I have read all three Harry Potter books and each one is an unique adventure that I strongly recommend. I do not agree with all the critism it has been given. Yes, it is not for little kids. No, it does not encourage Dark Arts/Magic. It is a book made for the fantasy genre, which has been around FOREVER.....many classics are fantasy stories. And if you know your child, and have brought them up to respect literature (which is the only way acheive knowledge) they will love it too for what it is, a story. I would let my child read this book way before I let them watch prime time television. When I was eleven, the most popular books in school were the R.L. Stien books. And somehow, no one opposed it like they did to Harry.
I encourage old and young to read it. The picture appears in your mind in great detail, and the story comes alive. Its pure pleasure.

Time Travel and Loads of Fun!

The Time Traveler's Wife (Harvest Book) - book cover picture

Though the time travel element is an unusual twist, don't let it deter you from reading this novel. It is handled very well, and I didn't have much of a problem following the story (regardless of the time flashbacks, etc). In fact, I personally found that the time traveling created really interesting conflicts for the characters, and even though the source of the conflicts is based on fantasy, the conflicts themselves are very real. Anyone who has been in love would be able to relate to the strong feelings these characters have for each other and the difficulty that Clare has with being periodically left behind. I highly recommend that you pick up this book --but be aware that it may be hard to put down. Other books I recommend: Life of Pi by Martel, The Losers' Club by Richard Perez

A compelling and terrifying journey.

Book title: Burnout
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Burnout - book cover picture

BURNOUT is a compelling and terrifying journey. Jack Stein is the distilled essence of an accomplished FBI profiler. By dispassionately weighing facts and meticulously analyzing behavior, Stein finds rational patters in seemingly irrational violence. He forges the killer's behavior into a weapon, ingeniously turning this powerful pathology onto itself. MS. kadow offers the reader uncanny insights into both the mind of a killer and that of an FBI profiler as each become predator and prey. BURNOUT is a harrowing and ultimately gratifying read. Highly recommended.

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity - book cover picture

I am always on the lookout for new ways to optimize my time. As an optimal thinker, I do not settle for second best. I have read many books of this type, but this one is most effective. Whereas other time management books and programs are often overwhelming and unrealistic, this book makes time optimization achievable. I recommend this book (to provide essential how to's for day-to-day organization) in tandem with Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self (to provide the thinking process essential for making optimal choices in any circumstance).

Clear exposition, copious examples, wide variety of topics

Book title: Abstract Algebra
Rating: 5/5

Abstract Algebra - book cover picture

This book has been useful for all of my algebra courses so far in undergraduate. The authors are incredibly clear and go out of their way to make note of possible misunderstandings or incorrect inferences. This way, they clear up a lot of common misconceptions before they have a chance to get rooted in one's mind. The many many examples are also fantastic and extremely helpful. The sections are in good bite-sized chunks for personal study, with lots of exercises. I appreciate the large scope of the book; as a reference, it is invaluable. There is even an appendix on Category Theory. I can see that this will be a useful reference for several years to come. However, no one book can completely cover abstract algebra, and as I begin to study more, I will have to move on to more specialized texts. This said, however, this text will outlast all my other textbooks in terms of years and courses for which it was useful.

Where the Wild Things Are - book cover picture

Where the Wild Things Are was my favorite books when I was a kid and still has to be one of my all time favorite child stories. I still actually read it some times just for the fun of it. I really like the pictures in this book and I really think kids like to look at pictures. Pictures are kind of important in kids books because you can't always picture what you are reading should look like. I think this story is really great and fun to read, which makes the story more enjoyable to read. I recommend this book to all kids.

The Best Book on Earth

Book title: Gone With the Wind/Scarlett/Boxed Set

Gone With the Wind/Scarlett/Boxed Set - book cover picture

Although this is the longest book I've ever read in my life (1024 pages in my edition), it wasn't long enough, and it never could be. I loved this book, and now that I've read it all i can say is that I'm glad there's a sequel. From the first few paes the book catches the readers and and wraps them up in it's pages, carrying them along with the life of Scarlett O'hara. We laugh with her, cry with her, feel her her emotions as if they were our own. You cannot stop thinking about the book, even though your mind should be on other things. The only desire is to keep reading and find out more, until the book finally lets go. Then the reader is left alone and confused, wondering what has happened, and where the story has gone. The book is a masterpiece, a novel in perfection, and my only regret is that this scale only goes from one to ten, for Gone With The Wind deserves a 100.
