Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood : A Novel - book cover picture

This book was a wonderful jumble of family relationships, learning to cope, and learning to accept what life throws at you. I really like the story. At times, I thought the main character, Siddalee, was a little whiny. I also thought that most girls would not have done some of the things that the YaYas did, just because of the times (pre-war).All in all, it was a wonderful story about enduring love.

Angela's Ashes: A Memoir of a Childhood - book cover picture

Beautiful and moving. Lingers in the mind after the story is done. A friend said they had trouble with McCourt's writing style and I told them to read it like you were reading music lyrics...because in a way it is a song or a collection of them. Very bittersweet. I won't retell the plot, you already know by now, doubtless. He paints a picture of life so bleak that it's hard to believe it's occuring in 20th Century Europe and not some Dickensian urban setting. I never in my life knew that an egg could be so highly valued until I read this memoir. It's good soul food for the eyes. Read it.I also might recommend Helias' The Horse of Pride if you're interested in the history and ethnography of fading European cultures.

Brilliant Synthesis

The Degrees of Knowledge (The Collected Works of Jacques Maritain) - book cover picture

Maritain, the major neo-Thomist of the 20th century, has written a masterful tome on most epistemological accounts that is not only versed in "knowing that," and "knowing how," but also the knowledge derived from religious experience, mystical experience, and various other "degrees" of knowledge which, like a spider, are webbed together in a wonderful lattice of gemlike reflections. One will find all sorts of epistemological issues handled with care and illumination -- even ones modern analytic philosophy finds too "metaphysical," -- that most people encounter in the course of a lifetime. A delightful read and a great treasure for future reflection and meditation.

As good as a book about walking in the woods gets

A Walk in the Woods - book cover picture

Bill Bryson's, "A Walk in the Woods," is a brilliantly realized memoir of his adventures in attempting to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. Written in his candid and delightfully breezy way the book is filled with an abundance of humour, keen insight and educational detail (history, nature, politics) making it a rich reading experience for just about anyone regardless of whether or not they have any interest in hiking the AT. While some have bemoaned that this book is 'adventure-lite,' I would argue that even though the book focuses on two, middle-aged, over-weight men their physical and mental disasters and glories are just as inspired as anything else chronicled by the likes of Jon Krakauer, et al.

Germinal (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

Emile Zola's Germinal tells of the class conflict between the miners of the Montsou Company and its' owners during the Industrial Revolution of France. Life for the workers had been continuing with mute suffering for generations until a newcomer named Etienne arrives, and becomes one of the countless workers who must endure the conditions of the mine to get his fortnights' pay. The tensions keep building as wages are lowered, and the catalyst that instigates the situation comes in the form of Etienne's zealous attitude to socialism. Germinal keeps accurate to the history of the time when new politics for the worker were being introduced; the International Working Mans Association is constantly referred to as a symbol of hope. Lastly, Germinal is a wonderfully detailed book which not one part of the dreariness of the worker's life is missed, one part of the superfluous luxury of the affluent is forgotten, and most importantly every emotion is expounded upon.

Little House in the Big Woods (Little House) - book cover picture

I love this series and I've been collecting them now for a number of years.

The story begins with Laura Ingalls growing up in the Big Woods of Wisconsin with her family. This book tells all about how they played, harvested, made cheese, went to sugaring off dances and how Pa hunted.
It gives a very accurate description of what life was like "in those days". I'm a teenager and I still love reading these books. In fact, I like them more now than when I was 7 or 8! Awesome books and I hope you'll take the time to read them.

Entertainment. That's what I read books for. I'm not looking to learn indepth scientific theory or discuss the literary merits of the novel as though it were a literary classic akin to that of Victor Hugo, Thomas Hardy or Jane Austen. That's what college was for. If these are the things you are looking for in this book, then you are probably going to be disappointed. If you are looking for an entertaining read, then you probably won't.

Influence: Science and Practice (4th Edition) - book cover picture

For my school work, I've had to do a TON of reading on persuasion and influence. Cialdini is THE expert, so I knew I'd have to read his work. What a joy to find that he writes in a lively, personable style -- I could scarcely wait to get to the next chapter! The book has thorough cites and is based on hard-core academic research, but it's written in a flowing, fun style that is normally reserved for those trashy pop-psychology books. As for the reviewer who thinks Cialdini is on the side of the manipulators -- he must not have read very far. In each chapter, Cialdini covers how you can mitigate or block the effects of these persuasive triggers. An ethical, easy-to-read academic? WOW!

Evolution of Hydrothermal Ecosystems on Earth (and Mars) - No. 202 (CIBA Foundation Symposia Series) - book cover picture

Explains the importance of hydrothermal systems with respect to the origins of life, and then explores the possibility of similar systems being present on Mars, as well as practical issues about detecting them.Review-type papers on relevant topics are written by leading scientists in the field, including: hydrothermal systems as sites for emerging life (E.L. Shock), water on Mars (M. Carr), and evidence for hydrothermal systems on Mars (J. Farmer). The papers were presented as part of a conference, and the book also includes transcripts of discussions between the authors/attendees. There are short question-and-answer sections following each paper, as well as several longer discussion sessions on specific topics. I found that to be a unique approach, and very interesting. I have used this book as a reference many times -- but then, I do research on this subject!

A "Must Read" for All Unpublished Writers Looking for Agents

Literary Agents: What They Do, How They Do It, and How to Find and Work with the Right One for You, Revised and Expanded - book cover picture

An unpublished writer myself, I wish I'd read Michael Larson's book before trying to find an agent for my book! It would've saved me much postage, time, and frustration, and it would've saved the literary agents to whom I wrote a lot of time and frustration, as well. Using healthy dollops of humor and common sense, Mr. Larsen takes the reader through every phase of establishing a relationship with a literary agent, clearly explaining not only what an agent does, but WHY the agent does it. He makes sense out of the publishing jungle for the first-time writer, and he helps novices like me understand that, with talent and perseverance, getting an agent isn't a crapshoot. Mr. Larsen's chapters on how (and how NOT) to write a query letter, how to prepare a manuscript for an agent, and how to maintain a good working relationship with an agent are outstanding, as is his excellent bibliography. This book belongs in every wanna-be published author's library!
