Dispatches from the south I still miss after 27 years

Due South : Dispatches from Down Home - book cover picture

I picked up this book one day and decided to give it a read because of the Fannie Flagg blurb on the front. What a treat! R. Scott Brunner has pulled together a collection of southern life that brings out the best, the rediculous and the beloved...and a few things we try to keep hidden. From the 'Bless your heart' rule, to the neighbors who tried to befriend Eudora Welty, there is a bit of everyone you know and love in the words. Never pandering to what the popular belief of what a Southerner should be, he points out what there is to love (and to laugh about) around us, the sights and smells and foods and sounds and people all evoke a south I miss every day of my life. In all this he has also managed to include, or rather infuse the pieces with a gentle belief in the goodness of folks, and some inspiration gleened from everyday. A real charmer of a book.

A Delightful Read!

Odd Thomas - book cover picture

Disappointed by his last few books, I was beginning to give up hope. I have been reading Dean Koontz since I was thirteen-years-old, and have read everything, despite not liking a few of his books. So I must admit it was with a somewhat heavy heart that I began Odd Thomas. However it was apparant right from beginning that this was unlike anything else he had written. The rule of thumb in my house is that whoever can grab the book the fastest can read it first. I was the lucky one so I got to read it first. It took me just one night to get through this book and I was sad to see it end. Only after Watchers and From the Corner of His Eye, Odd Thomas is my favorite book. Odd is a well thought out and heart-felt character and you feel for him from the first moment you encounter him. You can't help but feel everything he feels. He's so real that he almost jumps off the pages. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the older writings of Dean Koontz.

...so we can create incredible demand so I don't have to pay 16.95 for some of the ones that Harper hasn't bothered to publish yet! This is one of the best -- anytime Granny (Esme to her friends -- er, I mean friend) shows up, it is bound to be entertaining. This one has everything, including flat chested women (you will recognize her sort from your local looney NuAhge store) and fools who would be kings, apparently. Buy this now. Terry Pratchet's sanity can't hold out for much longer, and even the paperback's will be worth something when he finally cracks. Highly, highly recommended.

I first read this book as a class assignment in the fall of 1975. I remember it being perfect October reading material and couldn't put it down; it was charming even then. I have now re-read it as an adult and appreciate the fictional history, description, and the magnetism of the characters which is what captivates the reader. An excellent choice for anyone to read, not only in October, but anytime of year.

The Oxford English Dictionary, Second Edition (20 Volume Set) - book cover picture

The price is great, the dictionary is even greater. This goal for this version was that it become the definitive work on English words, usage and etymology. Did it succeed? Well, not really ... though blame the English language. So many new words have been added in the past 10 years that a massive 2 volume supplement was released in 1994 with over 50,000 new definitions. (Consider, how much has changed since than, with the rise of the Internet words such as "web" and "surf" have taken on new meanings.) Well, a new Oxford will be released in mid to late 2000 - and this great price is a way to clear inventory. I own this version, I will also own the new, but if you want only one dictionary I think you will be much better off waiting for the 3rd edition (which will also be on CD-ROM, with a much more efficient search engine and user interface then found on the 2nd).

Iowa Baseball Confederacy - book cover picture

They say certain words said in just the right way have magical properties. W. P. Kinsella proves this true. The Iowa Baseball Confederacy is a delicious lesson in abracadabra, a potion in print that cures the bored reader blues. He takes the agonies and ecstacies of love, mixes them with the power of lightning, sprinkles in the legends of summer and baseball and POOF - out comes one of the best books ever written. Don't read this if you want to get away from the everyday world. Read it to find the magic you've been missing (but that your heart always knew was there)

The real taste of real life

Book title: Medieval People

Medieval People - book cover picture

Eileen Power studies the Middle Ages, not from an abstract historical point of view but from simple and real people and what we can know about them. I particularly like her study of Marco Polo, from his notes and diaries, which gives us a materialistic and realistic vision of what they saw of the world, and not what we want to see of what they saw. I also loved Madame Eglentyne, a prioress taken from Chaucer but at once identified to one particular prioress through real life archives and descriptions. A very interesting and useful book to enable us to capture the density of everyday life in the Middle Ages.Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

Dear Oprah, I have to admit that I had never read one of your book club books, but when I heard about this book from a co-worker of mine(which by chance we work for Wal-Mart in Humble, Tx) I had to read it. Normally, I am a semi-slow reader , but I finished this book in about three or four days. I couldn't put it down. I am currently reading another Oprah recommended reading, "The Deep End Of The Ocean." Keep up all of your great work, and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!!!!

Probably the best recent introduction

Book title: The Oxford Guide to Heraldry

The Oxford Guide to Heraldry - book cover picture

An excellent introduction to the field by the Somerset Herald. Chapters cover the origins and evolution of the herald's art, the marshalling of arms, the technical aspects of blazoning, and even the proper decorative use of heraldry. The emphasis, naturally, is on Britain, but Europe and the United States are included as well. Very nicely illustrated, too, with a thick section of color plates. And a nice gift book, too.

No kidding -- Among the best books ever written!

Book title: Hawaii

Hawaii - book cover picture

One of my favorite books of all time. Just an outstandingly good read. The colors and sounds of Hawaii come to life with the characters he creates. The section on missionaries literally changed my life because it changed how I thought of the whole mission movement. This is presented in typical Michener style, starting with the pre-history of the region and bringing it through time to the present. The stories and characters presented here are among the most interesting he ever created. I have often said I envy anyone who is reading it for the first time. Besides, it's like taking a Hawaiian vacation. Pick up a copy, and have a really good trip!
