The Shadow of the Wind - book cover picture

As a military spouse, I only keep the books that have made an impact on me and that I know I will read again. This is one of those books. I stayed up until 3AM so I could finish reading it and it was wonderful. This book is all about how books can affect your life, particularly the good ones. I find myself thinking about the characters and the story at different times during the day, wishing there were more. This book is written like a classic - nothing too overdone but but everything is woven together beautifully. I'm anxious for his next book!

LONG LIVE HARRY POTTER!

Book title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) - book cover picture

This is the best Harry Potter book ever! Every single page was full of excitement, even the first few chapters, which are usually...not so great, considering they are just about Harry and the cruel Dursleys. Anyway, Harry is in a competition that hasn't taken place for a hundred years, due to too many casualties. Now, once again, Harry must battle evil. This book was great! I started reading it at 8:20 AM on July 8, and finished at 11:20 the next day. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish it was longer!

Hilarious, engrossing, amazing twists- best of Susan Isaacs

Book title: Lily White
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Lily White - book cover picture

There is no one quite like Lee White. Although everyone finds a part of themselves in Lee White, Susan Isaacs incredibly realistic character. Witty, funny, intelligent reading. Recommended to anyone who enjoys really knowing the characters they read and being engrossed in their lives. Lee finds that perhaps the best way to make yourself happy is to be not quite perfect. Being, not the damsel in distress nor the perfect feminist model, Lee's wit and point- blank look at life make her character incredibly relatable. Isaacs leaves you feeling like looking back after a long trip, complete with u-turns and potholes, but glad you bought your ticket.

A thoughtful, thought-provoking novel

Book title: The God of Small Things
Rating: 5/5

The God of Small Things - book cover picture

This book not only has beautiful prose and well-developed characters, but also a beauty and grace that many novels lack. The Indian landscape comes to life with Roy's descriptive prose, but what I found most impressive were the personal relationships within the book. The family, with all its complexities and quirks, really gets to the heart of what it means to love, and lose in this life. Most impressive are the passages written through the eyes of a child, not one detail is missed. This book transports you to a different place, where you can almost hear, smell, and see the sights of India.

A Feel Good Book

Book title: Plainsong
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Plainsong - book cover picture

This book was a pleasant surprise to me. It is filled with a lot of depressing, if not tragic sub-plots, but it shows the overwhelming benefits in the strength of community. The novel reminds me of a short story. Nothing is final in the novel, yet the reader get just enough information, a snapshot if you will, of these characters' lives. Wherever there is good, there is bad. Wherever there is bad, there is a lesson to be learned. The most beautiful things in life may lie in the most unlikely of places. I recommend this novel to anyone who wants a little pick me up.

As good as the "Prey" series

Book title: The Concrete Blonde (A Harry Bosch Novel)
Rating: 5/5

The Concrete Blonde (A Harry Bosch Novel) - book cover picture

Having read (and liked) Mr. Connelly's "The Poet", I picked up this book (number 3 in the Harry Bosch series) and couldn't put it down once I started. I will now start reading the remaining five Harry Bosch novels in chronological order because "The Concrete Blonde" was that good. Harry Bosch is a tough and extremely credible character, the book itself is an exciting read and very well written. I especially liked the fact that it kept you guessing right to the end, providing the reader (and Harry Bosch) with a lot of false tracks to explore. If you like John Sandford's Minneapolis-based "Prey" series, you can't go wrong with Michael Connelly.

Teens and phonies

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

I have read this book and I love it. A lot of people had told me about it and how good it was. The story is about Holden Caulfield, a troubled teenager who just got thrown out of high school. The story is about his experiences and thoughts. I think a lot of teens, even now, can relate. It's about feeling alienated and having every one against you. Holden keeps talking about all the phonies and there's a good point in what he's saying. The book is inspirational and eye opening. You should read it.

Always Have A Copy When You Travel

Book title: Around the World in 80 Days (Puffin Classics)

Around the World in 80 Days (Puffin Classics) - book cover picture

I was heading off to San Antonio for the weekend and needed a book to read on the plane. I arbitrarily grabbed Around the World in 80 Days and it was a good thing. While everyone around me on the plane and at the airport huffed and puffed about delays, I just sat back, like Phileas Fogg, knowing that things would turn out ok. Around the World in 80 Days is not a novel of depth, but thanks to Jules Verne's immense talent for suspense and detail, he created a tale so soothing and entertaining that all you worry about the next time you travel will seem inconsequential. Always carry a copy with you whenever you go somewhere!

Into politics? relig? sci-fi? econ? eco? drama? LOVE DUNE

Book title: Dune (Dune Chronicles (Econo-Clad Hardcover))
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Dune (Dune Chronicles (Econo-Clad Hardcover)) - book cover picture

I've read all 6 books several times (and I have a life!). The way Herbert builds a society, and describes its many aspects, is unparalleled. The entire series is really about control and power. Who/what is in charge? The government? econmics? religion? technology? military? males? females? nature?Once the reader gets by the new vocabulary (interestingly based on Hebrew & Arabic), and gets into the story (you may wish to have a scorecard), you will be completely absorbed and will not want to put the books down. P.S. Even though the movie is pathetic, I have to thank its creators. I had not yet read the books, but the story seemed compelling. I bought the first book the next day, and my literary life was changed. This got me into sci-fi reading (Asimov, Heinlein, etc...). Thank you Frank Herbert.

My Second Favorite Poirot Novel, lots of action

Book title: The Big Four
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Big Four - book cover picture

I have read all of the Poirot stories; and I find that this is my favorite, second only to Curtain. I like it because it is very different than the other books of the series. Poirot is much more a man of action, and the killer stays ahead of Poirot for most of this book. (Poirot is usually more in control early on in his cases.) There is also much more danger with Poirot being called upon more than once to save Hastings' life.

This story showcases Hastings' innocence and trusting nature more than any other book of the series. Because of Hastings' personality, Poirot has to resort to tricking him to effectively solve the case. The creation of Poirot's twin brother is one of the most interesting factors in this tale. Agatha Christie tricks her readers a bit too, but finally lets us in on the truth at the end.
