The Silmarillion - book cover picture

Having read both the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, the Silmarillion draws me back to a far older time when Middle Earth was young, and elves still walked in the sunlight. The deep and concordant themes that run throughout this entire book and only enhanced by the beautiful illustrations by Ted Nasmith, which serve to highlight the epic points and provide some extra imagery to complement Tolkien's amazing creative energies. The Silmarillion spans thousands of years, yet does so eloquently and beautifully, highlighting the ancient struggle between good and evil with characters that I can relate to.

Lawyerland: What Lawyers Talk About When They Talk About Law - book cover picture

I can't really understand others' criticism of this rather fine book. As a current law student, it was a breath of fresh air to hear members of my future profession discuss their work in the context of everyday practice. The author has made no claim that this book will teach laymen anything about the law or the specifics of how it is practiced. It is simply a collection of insights related to the lifestyle which accompanies a career in the legal profession. For those of us soon to tread those waters, I highly recommend it.

L.A. Times - book cover picture

Credit must be given to the prolific Stuart Woods for pulling off a novel in which the entire cast is heinous and unlikeable. L.A. TIMES pulls it off beautifully. One can't help but get involved in Michael Vincent's rise to the top of Hollywood cream and his fall from grace too. Michael will stop at nothing to get what he wants and a lot of bodies pile up on his rise to the top. He's incapable of really loving anyone, only he loves his movies. Filled with glitz and a knowledge of both the Mafia and the mechanisms of Hollywood movie-making, LA TIMES is a quick read, and its ending, although somewhat unexpected leaves an impact. Would make a great movie!

The Mugger - book cover picture

This is only the second McBain book I have read. It is very , very good. I am going to try to find them to read in order. Have a long way to go I know. The Mugger is about Bert Kling, who is a partolman. He is searching for a mugger named Clifford. He is doing this in his off duty time. Then a young girl Kling has met is killed, was it by the mugger or not????? The ending is great is all I will say about that. The book is fairly short, easy to read and will hold you attention. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery.

A Great Deliverance - book cover picture

I had heard about Elizabeth George, but had never read anything by her until one day at the bookstore when I was looking for something new. I picked this one since it was the first in the series, and thought I would give it a go.
I had not finished half of it before I was on the phone with my husband at work, demanding that he go to the bookstore ASAP and buy me the next two, because there was no way I could finish this and have to wait to read more.
Beautifully written, suspensful, and utterly absorbing. Elizabeth George is amazing!

just finnished this book (at work) and had to be excused to contain myself. this is definately a "must have" for anyone who can quit analizing themselves (and others) for a brief moment and just laugh. Dugger pokes fun at literally everyone, from dog lovers to Far Right Christian Evangelists. chances are, you personally know someone from each group she examines, it might even be yourself. put this on your x-mas list. the only downfall...it was too short.

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Richard Rhodes has done it again: produced a definitive work worthy of prizes and mention as the first major biography of artist John James Audubon to appear in forty years - and the first to reveal his private and family life. Fans of the bird artist begin with Audubon's arrival in New York from France in 1803, learning about his family background and his marriage to a wellborn English girl before he journeys to frontier Kentucky to begin a new life exploring the wilderness of birds against all odds. A riveting, finely crafted survey bringing life and insight into Audubon's artistic creations, John James Audubon: The Making Of An American is an essential, core title for academic and community library American Art History collections.

The Rake - book cover picture

I read this book back in 1991 and at that time, as an addiction counselor, wrote Ms. Putney a letter raving about the accuracy and compassion with which she wrote about alcoholism. But this book is not at all "preachy." She definitely shows, not tells, what it is like to overcome addiction. Her hero, while a "rake" and bad boy, has an extremely noble and generous heart. The heroine is wonderful, too. Another of Ms. Putney's strong, independent, and wonderfully compassionate and giving heroines. I also particularly loved in this book the fascinating interweaving of historical details about farming on estates in the Regency.

Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom : Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing - book cover picture

I am a person who reads a lot, and I learn a great deal about myself by sifting through the wisdom of writers. There have been many books over the years that have touched me deeply and positively impacted my life; of all of them, this book is probably the most personally important book I have ever read. Dr. Northrup has a lot of facts about various conditions and ailments, but her book goes FAR beyond that. Her message is that we all have the ability to be completely whole, healthy people, in every aspect of our lives, and that each of us has the power to change our own lives for the better. She talks about how emotional issues of every type can affect our physical health, and illustrates over and over again how problems in our body are actually our souls' way of teaching us how to heal and grow. The stories she tells about her own and her patients' healings are amazing; her message of hope is the most real and specific I have ever read.
