Peter's First Easter - book cover picture

I just read this book last night. It tells the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus through the eyes of Peter. It opens at the last supper (he didn't know it was the last) and draws the reader into the events at a gut-level but appropriate way for children. I've told my children the easter story before, but the emotion and drama here make it clearer. The outstanding illustrations illuminate the story even more fully. I encourage you to buy it and make it an easter tradition at your house.

Magic Steps (The Circle Opens, Book 1) - book cover picture

I always liked Tamora Pierce's books, like the Circle of Magic series. This book was very entertaining and suspensful and keeps you holding your breath, waiting for more. This particular book features Sandry, a former character of the Circle of Magic series. Now she is 2 years older and teaches her own student who introduces a whole new type of magic: Dancing. Teaching Pasco is the least of her problems. Murderers are set on killing the family of Rakat and our using a new, rare kind of magic: unmagic. The complete and utterly evil magic feeds on real magic and slowly consumes the user. Sandry is the only one who can stop these murderers from killing the whole Rakat family, one by one. I recommend this book, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, begging for more. Good reading for adults and kids alike!

The Silmarillion - book cover picture

J.R.R. Tolkien has respectively created such a unique and complex world or worlds as I might quietly add to the huge pile of information. The object that draws my to this account of the Quenta Silmarillian is the gargantuan capacity of events that happen in such minute space. The thoughts of this biosphere that Tolkien is in the " winners circle of Mythology, with all its controversy among the valar and the miar. The best qualities of his books are he recites the epic tale of good versus evil in an interesting manor, and the fact of Tolkien's consistency there are not flaws in this neo-classic. But his greatest accomplishments have to be the languages. The languages that Tolkien mustered up for his works are all self derived; he was a linguist and a powerful one at that. He devised 16 full languages and they all differ immensely. Tolkien is a genious leave it there and do not touch it.

A Clash of Kings - book cover picture

When I picked up the first book in a "yeah, yeah, yeah, allright ..." kind of way, I did not expect to be drawn in quite so thoroughly. The second book has certainly proved NO disappointment. I like the many levels of emotion he evokes, ranging through empathy, sympathy, admiration and pure disgust. Even his heroes are flawed (thank goodness) and the dear Imp - well, you don't know whether to be for him or against him, because of how it may impact other characters with whom you may empathize in the story. Plenty of loose ends to keep us impatient for Volumes 3 and ......

Dawn and the Big Sleepover (Baby-Sitters Club, 44) - book cover picture

I read this book a while back and I think it is one of the best BSC books ever written! I love how Dawn came up the fundraiser to help the Native American kids and then gave all of the Stoneybrook kids who helped out a huge sleepover with food, games, and prizes. The BSC is always doing something to help other people! I'm glad that Ann M. Martin came up with the Baby-sitters Club series! I can't wait to read this book again and all of the other BSC books! I recommend this book to any BSC fan!

Tales from Margaritaville: Fictional Facts and Factual Fictions - book cover picture

My husband and I went on a much needed vacation to see my brother in New Orleans and then on to Destin, Florida. I stopped in a Walgreen's in Belle Chasse, Louisiana to find some reading material and picked up this book. I loved it! I found myself in some of the same spots on our way through and really could identify with the feelings of the characters (give me some sunshine and a margarita please!). I've been to a couple of Jimmy's concerts but was not really a confirmed Parrothead. He's a great storyteller and I want to read "A Pirate Looks at Fifty" now! I found myself looking for Snakebite Key in our atlas!

Chicken Soup with Rice: A Book of Months - book cover picture

I remember being young, I don't know how old, but old enough to memorize every word. I had this Album, and wore out many a record needle listening to it. As I got to high school and attempted speech class, I knew there was one thing I knew backwards and forewards, chicken soup with rice, pick a ballad. And at auditions for plays or anything I needed to do, it was either johnny, the ballad of chicken soup, or Pierre. (I really didn't care which-inside joke to those who love pierre) anyway as I get older and see my friends have children and my relatives have children, I keep buying one book and tape over and over. This is one wonderful album which holds more treasures of memories than I can cram into any momorie book. and even to this day if you ask, I can still sing them all.

A Lovely Bio of an artist

Book title: Capote
Rating: 5/5

Capote - book cover picture

I ran across this book and hadn't thought about Capote in years and got it on impulse. It is just a wonderful bio and captures what Capote was and why he attracted such attention. It is hard to imagine what a youngster he was when he came on the scene and how he was so very loved. The book is full of lovely stories and famous people. The chapters on the "swans" was my favorite but his relationships, the accounts of his writing, his amazing ambition and ability to have devoted friends and ultimately his terrible end are written like a novel. Capote was generous, brilliant, kind, warm, seductive, vicious at times and utterly captivating. I now want to reread his books. But the accounts of his travels abroad, his long stays at wonderful quaint places and the "moveable feast" of his early life made me long to have been there. I loved this bio.

Paradise - book cover picture

This book sat on my "to read" stack for over a year. I kept hearing that it was rough sledding, but I finally picked it up and was completely enthralled. In fact, I'd say it was a page-turner. The book is something of a jigsaw puzzle, so it's important not to get frustrated when you don't know exactly who is who. After about 100 pages the pieces start falling into place and that makes it especially satisfying to read. (I recommend keeping a pencil and paper handy to jot down relationships on a family tree as they become clear.) Don't be put off by this, it's one of the great pleasures of Morrison's writing--in addition to her wonderful language and vast imagination.
