Deals the cult a mortal blow

Pathologies of Rational Choice Theory : A Critique of Applications in Political Science - book cover picture

This book is an excellent debunking of the rat choice cult and its high priests. By using rat choices own methodologies, Green and Shapiro prove that the cult has been a monumental waste of time and highly destructive in pol sci/IR. A timely book that (hopefully) will kill off the pseudo-scientific pretensions of the cultists and open up the discipline to more informative approaches and theories. One can but hope that the cult's grip on hiring practices is about to be loosened.

Applied Statistics and the SAS Programming Language (5th Edition) - book cover picture

Many, if not all Microsoft Windows user, are familiar with so-called defragmentation of hard drive. This Applied Statistics and SAS programming book by Ron is just such a defragmentator for a heavy SAS user like myself. I don't think anyone can find many tips, tricks or shortcuts in this book in terms of learning statistics and SAS. In practice, more often than not, I have to do "whatever is necessary" with SAS to get my analytical assignment done. Over time my touch upon SAS becomes "fragmented". No matter how well I organize notes and template, my statistical thought with SAS becomes muddy. This book has repeatedly set me back straight. I have read many SAS books by so-called pros. This is one of the few that has elegant verse and still makes technical points in simply ways. I don't often see a technical book having a dictionary quality like this one.

Everyday Sacred: A Women's Journey Home - book cover picture

This book is excellent. Sue Bender has an intimate way of writing--you feel like you're hearing from a good friend. I especially appreciate how she takes you through her thought process. She doesn't just serve up her insights--she shows you how she got there and in doing so takes you along for the ride. So you get to arrive at the same insights with the author; rather than just listening, you get to participate. This is warm, inspiring, lovely writing. Reading it was both illuminating and calming, and a true pleasure. I plan to share this great little book with all my friends.

My ultimate source.

New Jerome Biblical Commentary - book cover picture

I use other commentaries such as the Navarre Bible, Collegeville and Barclay's. I even refer to some Protestant commentaries for another point of view. But when I do not get enough detail or the references are too ambiguous I always end up going back to the New Jerome Commentary. It can get overly detailed sometimes so it is probably not your first source, but it will be your authoritative source when other lighter commentaries fail you.

Anpao: An American Indian Odyssey - book cover picture

This is my favorite book. Not only was it written with the exact precision I strive to imitate, but it was captivating in all ways. I could relate to the hero so much that I could have been the hero, and everything seemed to make sense, like it was written to me. I love Native American culture, but you don't have to in order to appreciate this book; it isn't about that. I would call it the greatest adventure novel of all time.

Ella Enchanted (Newbery Honor Book) - book cover picture

Before I read this book I read The two Princesses of Bamarre, and that one convinced me to read Ella Enchanted, and I don't regret it(what I should regret is not reading it), when I begun reading this book I could not force me to put is down is incrtedible, This the third time I read and I don't get tired of it. Besides, the curse explains her slavery and it also makes funnier the story. Mrs.Levine explains it all so well it makes you hate Hattie and love prince Charmont! I really recomend this book!

Are You Afraid of the Dark? - book cover picture

I have only read a handful of books written by author, Sidney Sheldon. I can't remember the last time I picked up a book and read it all the way through without putting it down. Before I finished page one I was hooked. I was there. I don't know how he does it but I had been transported as though I was in the room with all of the characters. Never have characters been so real to me before. I only wish the book were twice as long! More..more...please and thank you!

Excellent supplement to studies...

Schaum's Outline of Italian Vocabulary - book cover picture

I've been studying Italian on my own to review (I had 2 years of it in college). I have been using this book to solidify my vocabulary. It's been wonderful. Each chapter drills the vocabulary of a particular subject through several types of exercises, including fill in the blanks, multiple choice, short answer, matching, and reading comprehension. There are drawings illustrating scenes (i.e. in the aiport, etc.) and those are very helpful. I'm already using words I hadn't known were so useful! A great book to supplement textbook learning as well, I'd bet.

Dreadnought - book cover picture

Everyone has their favorite writers, I suppose, and Massie is one of mine. He is ontologically incapable of writing a dull sentence. His narrative propulsion over a thousand pages never flags or fails (to steal a line from one of the historical characters we meet in these pages); the energy, the verve and the drama are just as palpable on Massie's final page as on his first. The set pieces are magnificent, the conflict and drama in the run up to WWI are brilliantly evoked, and as always the biographical portraits are vivid and irresistable---Jackie Fischer, Churchill, and the infantile Kaiser being just three that stand out. I have long suspected that as long as the art of narrative is esteemed, the works of Robert Massie will be read and re-read for the sheer joy and pleasure of the experience.

Hostage : A Novel - book cover picture

This book is jam-packed with everything but the kitchen sink! To name a few--Action, murder, the Mob, kidnaping, cops, serial killer, spunky kids. What more could you want? Crais' story starts with a seemingly innocuous robbery of a mini-mart by three, less than brilliant thugs and soon escalates into a wild, twisting, turning ride, with a monkey wrench thrown in here and there just to keep you on your toes. It's good enough to keep one from pining over much about Elvis Cole.
