Dark but good

K Is for Killer - book cover picture

This is one of the darkest in the series, although that is a relative term because Kinsey Milhone's sharp wit adds a spice of humor to almost anything. It begins with an unsparing description of a mother's grief over a murdered daughter and then Kinsey uncovers some apalling things about the dead girl's life and family. The clues to the killer's identity come abruptly at the end and the killer's motives are not completely convincing. The most compelling part of the book is the psychological study of Lorna's family. We learn a lot about water treatment plants.
Those who want an intriguing traditional puzzle plot with "why-didn't-I-think-of-that" clues planted early on should try B is for Burglar.

The Blue Sword - book cover picture

I first read this book as young teenager, living in Pakistan with my Pakistani father and English mother. Apart from being a truly excellent book, it immediately caught my attention because it's setting. This is one of the few fantasy books that I have read that is set in India, in a thinly disguised Raj. It is this setting and the contrast between the pompous Homelanders and the proud and dignified Pathanlike inhabitants, and a great understanding of the feelings of colonized people that make this book stand out from most young adult fantasy.

I have used this Rune set ever since I attended a class given by Ralph years ago when he introduced the Runes. I have an original set and won't ever part with it. It always gives me a true answer. It puts me in touch with the unconscious that already knows the answer so I can see exactly where I need to make changes in myself in order to meet the current life challenge. It never fails to give a correct answer for my next step in spiritual growth. Thank you Ralph!

A First-Rate Text That Challenges As Well As Informs

Book title: Compensation
Rating: 5/5

Compensation - book cover picture

Milkovich and Newman's text is sets the standard for Compensation and Human Resources texts, period. From its strategic decisions framework it clearly illustrates that compensation policy can be a key to unlocking an organization's capabilities (and the ever elusive sustainable competitive advantage). The strength of the book is that it extracts and builds on key research findings in a way that advances the body of compensation knowledge (in a way pleasing to academics) and is relevant to practitioners. Chapter 2 on Strategic Perspectives and Chapters 9 & 10 on Pay for Performance best exemplify the confluence of research relevance and tactical usefulness. It is absolutely a must read for anyone who is a student of organizations or who attempts to manage one (not just compensation managers).

Stardust - book cover picture

If you have ever pulled your tattered copies of C.S. Lewis' Narnia Chronicles from their space on the shelf as an adult, you will definately enjoy this book. Not as innocent as Narnia, Stardust nevertheless conjures delightful tale of a young man's journey through Faery to lay claim to a fallen star. Interesting characters abound in this tale-- drawing the reader deeper into the twilight world of Faery as their tales are woven into the rich fabric of the world beyond Wall.

Richard Bachman beats Stephen King

Book title: The Bachman Books
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Bachman Books - book cover picture

I've read nearly all the Stephen King books (including the co-authored with Peter Straub) and I must say that King has done his best work as Richard Bachman. Many years ago, when the Long Walk went to the bookshelves as it's own work, written by an unknown author named Bachman, I picked it up simply by accident. King had been my favorite author at the time, and after reading The Long Walk, I had found a new favorite author. Although it is now widely known that Bachman and King co-exist in the same mind, their writing styles definately differ. I encourage anyone that likes King to dive into a Bachman book, particularly The Long Walk. If The Long Walk isn't what you are looking, try The Running Man. The movie The Running Man, although based on the book, comes no where near the same intensity nor even the same plot as the book. The book, like most books against movies, is about 10 times beeter than the movie.

A Crown of Swords (The Wheel of Time, Book 7) - book cover picture

Howdy, Well my fellow followers of the WoT, I must admit I am ashamed to say I only started this set of books two months ago but I am already through what is out. I am hungrily lusting after the final book. The one that should tell all. I will also admit the seventh book was a bit of a let down but still I could not wait for the next page and finished it in a day. R.J. is a master of fantasy and should rate up with the kings. Pratchett consistenly brings rare genius to the table with his colorfull discworld series and Small Gods is no exception. In one of his best written novels to date, Pratchett delves into religion, spirituality and dogma with uncomprimised insight. Featuring a page turning plot, intricate and memorable charachters, biting satire, and laugh out loud humor, Small Gods delves into fantasy yet arrives poigantly at the heart of human nature. The Crimson Claw (LucasFilm's Alien Chronicles, Book 2) - book cover picture

I especially liked this book because of the action. Who ever would have thought that Ampris turned into a gladiator, and killed lots of other aribu? This book is defintly a must have. Elrabin and Ampris meet up again, and throughtout the course of the book, they are seperated, but they meet again. In the near end, Ampris is sold to a labratory, where she used to do testing for the Dancing Death, which only hurts Viis, and the aribu races are immune to it. Ampris is made to have cubs, and her single female cub is taken away and dissected. Her other 2 cubs look quite odd. In the very end, Elrabin the Kelth comes with a bunch of Rejects to rescue Ampris. However she doesn't need rescuing. She has broken out of the labratory, and taken her fellow captives with her. The former Blues champion is now a fugitive.

The spirit of giving with nothing expected in return

Book title: The Giving Tree
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Giving Tree - book cover picture

This is my favorite book of all time. In fact, I have designed the nursery for my newborn around this book, with the main focus of the room being a mural showcasing the cover. I believe the book shows that giving without expecting anything in return can be fufilling. The last line in the book states this, "and the tree was happy", what better lesson for a parent to teach their child. Sure you can look at the dark side, and focus on the selfishness of the little boy, but I choose not to. Shel Silverstein purposely left the meaning up to the reader for interpretation.
