Sophie's World : A Novel About the History of Philosophy - book cover picture

Reviewers who complain the plot of this book is weak, that the ending is a "cop-out", that the story line gets "too weird" have, in my opinion, totally misunderstood the point of the novel, and have not paid proper attention to the philosophy lectures embedded in the novel. READ THE SUBTITLE - it's a novel about the history of philosophy! The clues to the plot are in the philosophy, and the plot, as well as the ending, make perfect sense provided you have understood the philosophy.I would like to thank the reviewer who warned me not to read the Kirkus review. WARNING AGAIN - DO NOT READ THE KIRKUS REVIEW UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE BOOK! AMAZON, YOU SHOULD REMOVE THIS REVIEW - IT GIVES THE WHOLE GAME AWAY!

The best book I've ever read! (And I'm not even finished!)

Book title: The Stand

The Stand - book cover picture

I haven't even gotten halfway through The Stand, and I have already decided-I have never read a better book! The story just draws you in, and you can't put it down! All of the characters are wonderful, and I find myself beginning to care about all of them, even the ones I should despise! The book is very descriptive-I can see the plague circulating our country very vividly in my mind. The aftermath is chilling-an empty world. I started reading it on vacation, and found our van driving on a deserted road one day. I suddenly felt like I was there, living the story. I was one of the survivors, searching and searching for another human being. It was spooky! I really do feel like I am part of the story, as I read page after page. I have begun to make myself another character in the book! This is the best Stephen King book I have read so far. And even though there are none of the usual scary horror stuff, this is the most frightening book I have ever read!!!!

The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1) - book cover picture

I read this book, because of a it was recommened to me and i was going to help program something that had to do alot to do with this book. I thought it wouldn't be that great but it has, and i think will be forever, the best fantasy book i have read. It jumped right into things and did not bore me for the first hundred pages about descriptions like most books do, but it gave plenty description at that. I recommend it to all who haven't read it.

I Am Regina - book cover picture

Title: I Am Regina Reviewed By: Chris Pyo & Scott Rudolph Rating: 10 Category: Historical Fiction Author: Sally M. Keehn We read this book and we want to review it. We rate this book a 10 because it was an action-packed drama. The book was really great because of the plot. The plot was based on a true story. It showed a good view of both sides, the Indians and the white men. We saw why they both had so much hatred for eachother. If we were the author we would have changed one thing. Instead of the white men just taking Regina back with them, she would have had a choice to stay with the Indians or to go with them. We would have liked her to choose to stay with the Indians because she felt that they were now her family. Read this book because once you pick it up, you can't put it down!

A Ulysses for the crime genre

L.A. Confidential - book cover picture

How epic is this book? Both the plot and the character development are first-rate and Ellroy writes out of his skin. The fear and the passion simply pour from the first page to the last. There are more twists and turns here than the average rollercoaster. If anything watching the film first adds more twists as things you expect to happen don't. Sinister in the extreme this is more horrific than many of the pat horrors available at the minute. Absolutely compelling.

The Lovely Bones: A Novel - book cover picture

Susie Salmon, like the fish. You won't forget her anytime soon. Sebold's book is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. It is an astonishingly beautiful. It is sad. It is moving. So much happens that you really need to read it. Actually, do don't read it so much as experience it. This is not easy book to read--child murder is not easy to read--yet, Sebold makes you face all of it. There a touch of the magical and dreamy here, but that is as how it should be. The book is something you never will forget.

Deceptively simple and utterly brilliant

Book title: Little Children : A Novel
Rating: 5/5

Little Children : A Novel - book cover picture

Funny, haunting and memorable, LITTLE CHILDREN is one of the best books I've read this past year. It's deceptively simple. On the surface it's a satire of suburbia, the tale of an extramarital affair that seems doomed from the get-go. I mean, can two married adults who get it on while their kids nap, sail off into the sunset, especially when there's a convicted child molester lurking around the corner? There's genuine pain underneath the laughs, a realization that families provide, at best, a flimsy mask over our insecurities and failures.

Unforgettable

Book title: Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics)

Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

I think that the two most memorable scenes in English literature may be from this book: when Gwendolyn receives the diamonds as a wedding present from Lydia Glasher and starts screaming uncontrollably, and when Gwendolyn goes out in her new carriage and sees Lydia and her illegitimate children watching her in the park.An absolutely unforgettable novel. Years ago, F. R. Leavis made the comment that the parts of this novel concerning Gwendolen Harleth are much better than the parts concerning Daniel and his search for his identity--Leavis has been much taken to task for this comment, but the truth is, he's right--Eliot was so intent on ennobling her Jewish characters that Daniel, Mordecai, and Mirah are a pretty spotless and thus forgettable bunch.
