DANDELIONS by Eve Bunting

Book title: Dandelions

Dandelions - book cover picture

DANDELIONS is a very moving story. It does an excellent job in describing the struggles and bravery of a pioneer family. Although it doesn't detail why the family had to leave Illinois (their home), it does show readers that even back then parents may not have always agreed on family issues. Through the dialogue in the story it is apparent that the family wants their apprehensive, pregnanat mother to be happy, and they strive to make her so. The painted illustrations by Shed were very true-to-life and warm; they establish the setting and mood of each page. Further, the pictures helped define the characters by showing emotion through facial expressions and body language. Of course, those factors contributed in reinforcing the text. Despite the fact that the artwork has a warm fuzz to it (almost giving a surrealistic feel), attention to detail was definitely established, giving the story realism and life.

The Alienist - book cover picture

Missing this book would be, for not only an avid reader but for any literate individual quite an unfortunate missed opportunity. This book is truly a page turner with very few dragging sequences or pages with the potential interuppting one's enchantment with it's story. If forced to identify the books least powerful attribute, I would have to refer to the book's ending which I must admit, was somewhat disappointing. The reason for this being that it waivers from the rest of the book's theme of originality and unpredictabilty in favour of a more predictable, possibly film-adaptable ending. But over-all this book is well-worth a purchase andI praise Caleb Carr on his novel, obviously the product of considerable research and attention to historical accuracy.

Everyday Dress of Rural America, 1783-1800 : With Instructions and Patterns (Dover Books on Costume) - book cover picture

I ordered this book a few weeks ago. I have been looking for books to help make costumes to take my grandchildren to reenactments, which has stimulated their intrest in history. This book is the most balanced book I have seen-in that it tells you what you want to know, why it was what it was, and it is easy to read and understand. It covers men and women's clothing, with illustrations and graft patterns, along with fabrics and sewing techniques. I find this book delightful with information put in a fun and usable way. There are not enough book's that I have found on everyday dress, so this is a great and much needed addition.

Anti-intellectualism in historical perspective.

Anti-Intellectualism in American Life (Vintage) - book cover picture

I have always been puzzled by anti-intellectualism. It never ceases to amaze me how America can be such a technological giant at the same time it is so easily duped by telephone psychics. Richard Hofstader puts the dilemma into historical perspective. He shows how intellect has come to be "resented as a form of power and privilege" and how "at an early date literature and learning were stigmatized as the prerogative of useless aristocracies." Such thinking remains a barrier to fighting racism and achieving greater quality of life for all of us. This book offers deep insights into how and why ignorance is still revered by so many people in what is supposed to be an age of enlightenment. Highly recommend.

Book Review on Torn Thread

Torn Thread - book cover picture

This review is on Torn Thread by Anne Isaacs. The story is during the Holocuast with a family tryng to survive. One day Eva, Rachel (her sister), and their dad are split up. Eva and Rachel are deported to a work camp in Parschnitz, Czechoslovakia. It's a test of survival for the girls as things happen to them.
This is a touching story that symbolizes how two sisters don't give up on each other. Anne Isaacs did a good job of keeping the book interesting and kept me turning the pages.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in historical fiction and in the Holocaust.

Road Fever (Vintage Departures) - book cover picture

I also have an addiction to travelling off the beaten path locations where it's usually much cheaper than a typical tourist
destination. Having travelled through much of Mexico as well as
a good stretch of Pan-American with my friend in Peru, I can really identify w/Mr. Cahill. These are the tales of misadventures not so different from many of my own. It's not that difficult to get stopped a dozen times by Mexican police in a beat up old El Camino, two-tone w/ primer spots here and there
and mag wheels, and pay a bribe only once. Licensia?, oh, he means license; Si,Si, it's on the bumper Senor, as they walk off in frustration.
In Peru, a policia may ask for a lightbulb for the station as a bribe. When queried as to where one might find a light bulb, they say that the equivilent cost in Soles(Peruvian$) will do instead.
Never really enjoying the luxuries of tourist resorts, the journey, is always more interesting!

After reading many history books I have to say Keegans work takes you right onto the battlefield. Its one thing to know who took the hill and when but now I know what it felt like before during and after! Keegan has not limited himself to one era and seems to excel in making the reader understand what an archer, cavalryman, or artillaryman dealt with in their time. Should be required reading at west point!

In a Sunburned Country - book cover picture

Last year- while visiting Australia- I decided nearly the same thing that Bryson did- that there simply isn't any other place in the world so mysterious and so beautiful. Bryson's account of the land down under (from an undoubtedly American perspective) is the best I have ever read. The book is also filled with hilarious episodes, fascinating history, and tips on which cities to see and which to avoid. One could easily plan a trip of their lifetime based just on the experience and insight in this book.

Palahniuk has got to be my choice author, from everything I have read he's topped it. The book is even more in depth than the movie however both media were fairly similar besides a few switched lines. Actually it was remarkable how close the movie got to the book, I think that says something about how amazing the plot was by itself without being messed with. My recommendation: watch the movie once; it'll give you an intro to the characters, the mood, and the setting. Watch the movie a second time; that'll let you see the more humorous side to the movie and the overlooked scenes. Now read the book; it will take you by surprise how the book is formatted, I now prefer this style.
