Shutter Island - book cover picture

This was a wonderful mystery, full of unexpected twists and turns. I don't want to give away more than has already been described by others, so I will just say that, in addition to the fine mystery, I found especially nice the wonderful picture drawn of the early 1950s. Everything seems just right on target. Anyone who loves a good mystery, full of doubletakes, will love this book. The delimma that is mentioned in the book re the sorts of treatment, surgical vs drugs vs talk, has led to much discussion in my family. I will say, however, finally, that I did kind of guess the end before I was a dozen pages in. But that is not a reflection on the skills of the author -- I just have read lots of stories and there are only so many twists any plot can take. And the author gave exquisite little hints. I plan to read all his works!

One of my favourite books...

Book title: Bilgewater
Rating: 5/5

Bilgewater - book cover picture

This book is surely the ultimate tragic comedy. At the same time as teetering on the brink of despair, I was laughing raucously out loud (which, as an indication of Bilgewater's sheer funniness, I never do, so beware of reading this book in public places!). Bilgewater's character is a work of genius: ungainly, bookish and forlorn; insightful, intelligent and original. My favourite, favourite part is the crazy vision of Bilge climbing out of the Roses' window. If you are looking for something a bit weird, offbeat, or, in fact, just a brilliant book, I would strongly recommend this one. :o)

I absolutely loved this book. It was written by the author to her daughter after she fell into a coma, and it is about their family history. The tales from the past are so well written it is hard to believe it is nonfiction. Allende is honest and funny as well as seriously shaken by what has happened to her only daughter. I love this book so much I have read it 3 times and I love it more each time.

Working with Emotional Intelligence - book cover picture

Once in a great while a truely unique book comes along that expands the mind. Fortunately , I have been lucky twice in the last year. I have had the great fortune to be exposed to two super books, this one and 'Life and Death on the Internet' by Keith A Schroeder. Both books belong in your library. Both open your mind. The true ability of Emotional Intelligence is to know when to do something right. Like buy these two books, read them, and put them to good use.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (Star Wars) - book cover picture

This is Star Wars Episode 5.5. What happens between "Empire" and "Jedi"? What is the deal when Mon Mothma mentions that many Bothans died to bring us the New Death Star info? What is the deal with Leia's disguise in "Jedi"? Chewy's Hair cut? etc. This book actually begins in the middle of "Empire Strikes Back" during Darth Vader's Communication with the Emperor. We see that scene from Vader's perspective in "Empire". This book cleverly begins from the Emperor's chambers. And immediately, the reader is hooked!Read this book!!! If you are like me and have seen the movies so many times you fear to even speak the number, this book has the ability to make you freshly view Episodes 5 and 6 from a whole different light. As a testament to how good this book is, a soundtrack was developed and and entire (abbreviated) Hasbro toy line. I would love to see this one translated to film, that is how good this is.

Sorting Fact From Fiction

Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson - book cover picture

I have read this book a number of times. Having grown up in Wyoming, I am familiar with much of the country and many of the people described in the book. Opening this book is like going home all over again. This is not an "historical novel" but a retelling of actual events that reads better than any fictional adventure story. The best part about the book is that it turns the giants of the American West into real people, with real foibles and follies. The mountain men weren't super heroes, but regular people living a hard and dangerous life. It's an excellent snapshot of the realities of frontier life, told by the people who lived there. Thank God Raymond Thorp interviewed these men before all knowledge of their lives passed into obscurity.

I love Stuart Woods style of writing. He gives alot of detailabout any subject he writes, flying, guns...withoutboring the reader with too much techno talk. This book is a fun, easy read but still manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. Woods has a terrific ability to create a real, human main character with the kind of strengths and weaknesses we can all relate to. His characters are not flat, perfect descriptions of what are supposed to come across as people. Instead he gives you a man who is totally human. One who has made some mistakes in his life and still has alot of growing to do. Woods also gives you a story with complex enough mystery to keep you reading but not so convoluted as to be confusing. All in all a book truly worth reading and one which will make you go out and try to find others by this same terrific writer.

I got this book for Chrismas and didn't think much of it. Two or three months after when we went to the beach I brought it along just in case I got bored. I read a hundred or so pages a day! My grand parents came from Autralia and brought my the next three books and I can't keep my nose out of them. I manly like this book because it is set in the past, it's a fartasy story and it has a little bit of every thing!

Not all vampire books are like Ann Rice's

Book title: The Historian

The Historian - book cover picture

I had to write this after reading the person who did not like this book b/c it was not like Ann Rice's.

This is a wonderful book rich with the color of history, as the title implies. It does not just travel through centuries but rather paints a taste of what it might be like. This book is about the man Vlad Teppes not just any old vampire but Dracula himself. He was not sexy rather scary as hell. I thought the author did a good job in making you fear this person who was one of the bloodiest men of history.

If one is looking for a sexy vampire book look at Laurell K. Hamilton's books she is great.
Not all vampire books are like the wonderful Ann Rice's nor should they be, that would be boring.

A Double-Take On Our Internet Crazed Society

Book title: Silicon Snake Oil

Silicon Snake Oil - book cover picture

I really enjoyed this book for a number of reasons. One being the fact that most of what Mr.Stoll is saying is true. Second is that he has a quirky and funny way of explaining the logic behind his rants. This book is one that needs to be read with an open mind. I was, and in some ways still, hooked on the Internet. This book showed me some of the faults in how I view this new and creative medium. I now view the Internet as simply a tool to derive information from. Not a total escape from reality that I used to view it as. I hope Mr.Stoll writes another though-provoking essay. Good job!
