Ghost Soldiers: The Forgotten Epic Story of World War II's Most Dramatic Mission - book cover picture

There are some stories that are better left untold b/c you can never get the same reaction, feeling or visualization. This book is not one of them; I read this book a little while ago and remember the story so vividly. From the descriptions of what the POW's endured; how they sacrificed for each other and the ultimate rescue the details just stand out... On one hand this book would be a great movie on the other, to have Hollywood ruin it would be terrible. For the generation that didn't live through Vietnam, Korea and WWII this shows what our soldiers and the American people would do for freedom...

Oh how 24 hour news channels have changed our lives.

Far, Far superior to Man in the Gray Flannel Suit

Book title: Revolutionary Road
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Revolutionary Road - book cover picture

I read it in 1990. The book is far superior to Man in the Gray Flannel Suit in terms of its character development and ending. The characters, appropriately named April and Frank Wheeler, are proto-yuppies, surrounded by shallow suburban values. (This was written in 1961 and takes place in 1955.) I found the part where they reminisce about old radio shows of the '30's interesting, putting to rest the notion that baby boomers were the first generation to indulge in nostalgia. I thought this would be a good vehicle for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

The Voice of the Village is still in tune

Forever: A Novel - book cover picture

The first time I ever read anything by Mr. Hamill was in the Village Voice in the mid sixties, and I believed at the time, here's a guy that gets it. This novel reinforces that belief. His prose is eloquent and very readable, his tale is magical, gripping and a thoroughly fascinating trip through the history of New York City and Mr. Cormac O'Connor. Cormac, or any of the other names he goes by throughout his unending life, is a character we can identify with, admire, and appreciate.
I will not encapsulate the novel here, read the Amazon review for that, just buy this book and hear Mr. Hamill hit all the right notes. Bravo!!!

how can you be so removed from everything

Book title: The Reader
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Reader - book cover picture

I thought this was an excellent, quick read on a topic I, as an American, certainly haven't pondered in great depth. One thing that struck me most about the book was how removed Micheal is from virtually everything in his life. He reports on everything in a most dispassionate way - his near fatal illness, his affair with Hannah, the trial (he doesn't even become outraged at the ineffective assistance of her counsel), law school, his relationship with his father, his marriage, etc. For example, look how he went to the judge and could never bring himself to talk to the judge about Hanna and the episode instead focuses on how the judge is just a civil servant after all. I would have thought that any or all of these events would have produced more passion. Oprah continues to do a great job of picking good books on thought provoking topics and getting Americans to READ!

Great, thought-provoking novel

Book title: Truth Machine

Truth Machine - book cover picture

My ex-girlfriend suggested The Truth Machine to me. I am sure she ment it as a slight but then I happened to see it and picked it up, and I am glad she said that. I don't believe I have ever felt more empathy for a literary character than I did for Petey. As far as relationships are concerned, hey, take the thought of whether or not you can trust a person out of the equation. Wouldn't it be nice to scip the salesman the next time you get a new car? However some questions should never be scipped; Do you think these jeans make me look fat? Who do you think is a better cook me or your mother? Perhaps a white-lie tolerance should be allowed. Or hopefully people will learn not to ask those kinds of questions.

Neither Here Nor There (Travels in Europe) - book cover picture

I bought this book for an aquaintance, a young guy with a good sense of humor and dreams of backpacking across europe, and couldn't resist reading it before passing it on. It really is hysterical, moving at a less tedious pace than some of his other travelogues. Bryson's ability to ridicule others (and himself!) and have it come off as endearing not an insult is remarkable, and the humor isn't forced, suprisingly poignant observations blend right in. The gift was quite a hit!

More than a cookbook

Java Cookbook, Second Edition - book cover picture

The examples in this book are truly useful. I am an experienced programmer just starting with Java and in finding an answer in this book, I often discover better ways of doing related tasks as a welcome side effect. In addition, the author presents each code example with a thorough and useful explanation. His writing style and attitude are humble, opinionated, direct and humorous. This is the only book in my java collection that's a pleasure to read.I tried using Java examples in a nutshell... I haven't picked it up since obtaining "cookbook". Plus I look to "cookbook" first before either java in a nutshell (except for simple reference) or java servlet programming.

Great for beginners

Book title: The Starter Oxford Chinese Dictionary
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Starter Oxford Chinese Dictionary - book cover picture

This dictionary is exactly what the beginning student of Mandarin Chinese needs. It's specifically targeted at English speakers who are just beginning to study Chinese. To that end, the size of the vocabulary is limited to just what you need as a beginner; there are numerous detailed usage and grammar notes throughout the dictionary; almost every entry has example phrases or sentences; all Chinese is given in both Pinyin and characters; and perhaps best of all - it's extremely clear, well-designed, and easy to read. My only complaint is that there is no index of traditional characters (all characters are simplified)...but that doesn't really detract from the quality of this dictionary.

Book title: The Wave

The Wave - book cover picture

I never read this book in high school, although in my World History class, we watched the TV movie adaptation. I finally read this book when I began a career in psychology. This book was also particularly interesting because it actually based on events that happened in the town I lived in, and has since been etched into the town's history.Regardless of where the story takes place, it paints a painfully important lesson. It shows us how incredibly easy we could fall into a fascist society. No matter how much we talk about how ugly and apalling the Nazi movement was, it could easily be us. This story is also a prime example of why history is such an important lesson. It's not just for the knowledge of facts, but more importantly a lesson of how we should or should not lead our lives to avoid the same mistakes our forerunners made.

Guide for the Perplexed - book cover picture

This is a profound piece of writing, well worth a mere ten dollars. Schumacher, even though he was a high ranking economist in the British government for over 30 years, understood that numbers and other forms of quantifiable (observable) knowledge were phantoms of true knowledge. This book, in a very dense and deep, yet perfectly rational and understantable way, describes the failure of modern societies (and people) to reconcile themselves with their past and their place in creation. Your life has a meaning and a purpose beyond your physiological composition and the consumption of material goods. Read this book to find out why.
