When Character Was King: A Story of Ronald Reagan - book cover picture

What a superbly written book by Ms. Noonan. Obviously she is in love with the man, with what he has stood for, with his background, with all of his accomplishments.. and rightly so.
What is so striking is the vast difference between the Character of Ronald Reagan and what one might view as a lack of upright, moral character by a man named Clinton who just vacated the Presidential Office, but not before desecrating the office like no one has ever done.If you are a Reagan fan, you'll love this too. If you are not yet a Reagan fan, you too should read it. Even though Peggy Noonan is partial to the man, in the interest of impartiality and fairness she balances her presentation by including stories and events that are not very flattering Mr. Reagan's legacy, but were events that helped to shape his own character as time moved on.

The Ax - book cover picture

I read this book last year and still think of it from time to time. What a great book. It's macabre and funny and very disturbing. Burke is a genuinely likeable man who has exhausted all of his possibilities in landing a new job after being downsized. His solution to the problem is to kill off the competition. As silly as it sounds, he approaches each killing reluctantly and seems genuinely sorry to have to resort to such an extreme. The first-person viewpoint is what makes this book a winner. Getting inside Burke's mind as he rationalizes his acts is quite a ride. I found myself laughing out loud as I read it. My fellow travellers on the plane must have thought I was nuts.I highly recommend this book. You will love it.

How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling (Reward Book) - book cover picture

I have given away hundreds of copies of this book to my employees. If a new salesman could or would read only one page of one book ever, page 18 is it. In essence it says you can't track your performance if you don't track your efforts leading to performance. I read this at the age of 18 when I started at Merrill Lynch, and by the age of 20 I was the Sr. VP of Bear, Stearns. I thank this book for all my success and none of the failures!

Spindle's End - book cover picture

A beautiful fairy tale by Robin McKinley. What more is there to say? Spindle's End celebrates our ability to make our own choices, even if we're cursed at our christenings by evil fairies. This novel is perfect for young and old alike: unlike Deerskin, which was only for adults, or Rose Daughter, which had a somewhat high reading level. Get this book for yourself or any young person looking for his or her own path in life.

I bought this book after reading the various reviews listed here. I was captured by it on the first page, and could only put it down reluctantly. The fact that Alan Furst used real historical facts to weave the plot of this book made it a winner with me. There was only one part of the book that ran rather slowly, but all in all, I rate this book at the top along with the "Smiley" trilogy from John LeCarre. You won't be disappointed.

A fundamentally new approach that works!

Accelerated C++: Practical Programming by Example - book cover picture

Most programming language books focus on the detailed machinery in the language (syntax, etc.), but that's not what you need to be productive writing programs. In the case of C++, most of the useful stuff is in the library (I know, I helped wok on the Standard library ;-). This book starts with that useful stuff first, and introduces the language details as needed. This is a great approach, especially for those who need to write working, _useful_ programs in C++. A great idea, and very effective! Get a copy of this book, and see for yourself.

Excellent, metaphorical account of hope vs. despair

Book title: The Underdogs
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
The Underdogs - book cover picture

I was assigned to read this book for a Mexican Literature class, and I was expecting it to be just another boring history novel. However, this novel was a wonderfully metaphorical account of the hopes, yearnings, desires, and dreams of the "rebels," the poor common-man revolutionists during the Mexican Revolution. It is full of colorful similes that really increase the effects of the fight...the cause...that these people are working for. It is, by no means, "just another war-filled history story." It's an easy read, I finished it cover to cover in just a day and a half, and there's an actual story-line to follow, unlike with so many history tales which are merely accounts of battle. This story has more than its share of graphic battle scenes, but the plight of the revolutionists somehow stirs up empathy with the reader. A fine piece of Mexican literature. Recommended.

Great Resource About a Great Author

Book title: Anne Tyler
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Anne Tyler - book cover picture

Anne Tyler is a perceptive writer with an original, slightly off-kilter style. This book includes a chapter of biographical material on Anne Tyler, as well as another chapter discussing the major influences on her--other Southern writers and women writers. There is an extensive discussion of several of her best novels, from the beginning of her career through 1998. Each novel gets a whole chapter devoted to it. Stylistic peculiarities, construction of the novels, character development and theme are covered, with unique insights into how each novel reflects themes in Anne Tyler's life. Tyler shunned publicity and gave very few interviews, but did consent to an interview with the author of this book in order to clarify some fine points. Well researched and well written, this is a treasure for anyone who appreciates Tyler's work.

25 Emergent Reader Mini-Books (Grades K-1) - book cover picture

For the price, this book is a great bargain. My first graders who hate to read LOVE to make and take home these books. They are too hard for my kindergarteners to read, but they enjoy coloring them and reading them with me and at home (I teach resoruce). The books cover a great variety of topics, from self-esteem issues, to seasonal, counting and cooking. They have equal appeal for boys and girls. The only draw back is it is hard to get the double-sided copies to line up well enough that the kids can cut, fold and staple the books themselves, but once you do, the books are easy to put together and a good size for the kids to handle and take home. One of the previous reviews was right - there is a lack of predictable language. Don't buy this if that is what you want!! But these books are great to motivate students to read, and I find I can tie into a variety of word study topics in most of the books. (wh questions, sh sounds, etc.)
