I got hooked with Marian Keyes after reading Watermelon. Then I picked up Lucy Sullivan and ended up with the same satisfaction. This one was a little bit different though. I don't mean that I hate it, I think this was as excellent as the other two that I've read. But the plot was much more heartwarming, especially since one of the character (Fintan) had Hodgkin's Disease. Some scenes were funny but there were times that I took a deep breath and sighed when it came to Fintan's condition. It was a great read ... and now I'm proudly declared myself as one of Keyes' fans

The Wizard of Oz: 100 Years of Magic

The Wizard of Oz (Puffin Classics) - book cover picture

It is unfortunate that most people know The Wizard of Oz only by the movie. To be perfectly honest, I found the movie bland compared to the book. For those who have read the book, many don't know that there was thirteen other Oz books written by L. Frank Baum. People who have read the first fourteen probably don't know that five other authors wrote more Oz books after Baum's death, making a total of forty books in the original series. The Wizard of Oz is a wonderful book for anyone no matter what age you are. Just remember to forget every thing you saw in the movie. Most people are surprise when the story doesn't end where the movie ends. When you,re finished the book try the other books in the series. I think you would enjoy them all.

A Prayer for Owen Meany - book cover picture

When i found myself reading the last page of this book, it was clear to me that i will never forget the time in my life that i was introduced to "OWEN MEANY", much the same way those in November of 62 never forget where they were when news of the assassination of J.F.K.was made known to them... This is one of those rare books that, once read, is always very close toyour thoughts. the world in which we live would be far better if there were alot more "OWENS" to teach us more about ourselves... who knows?... it is MY prayer that there are...

Well written, but lacking some explanations.

Chemistry: The Central Science - book cover picture

Our high school Chemistry II class uses this book and I find it be well written. Each chapter builds on the previous for the most part, and basic concepts are review and expanded on. My only complaints would be that sometimes rather uselss information is included and the book would start explaining a topic and say, " it would be impractical to elaborate more since it is beyond the scope of this book." The book is orall well organized and explained. Great for reference.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra : A Book for Everyone and No One (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

In a world of cheap thrills and fast money, Thus Spoke Zarathustra offers an eciting journey into a path very often left dark. It is a book for unbelievers, for synics, for lovers of culuture and art. It is not a book for scholars who would simply like to master one more book to add to their arsenal and then to be able to bring it up in coversation to impress people. Zarathustra written in beautiful prose, means everything and absolutly nothing all in one. It challenges all values and offers ideas for one to discover oneself. Never telling one how to discover oneself, but simply that one must leave behind many things to rise out of the depths that are ones emotions, Nietzsche gives anyone looking to enjoy a good book what they want.

"Acela" says it all

Derailed : What Went Wrong and What to Do About America's Passenger Trains - book cover picture

If anybody is skeptical about Mr. Vranich's message, one only has to consider what Amtrak's been up to since 'Derailed' was published. After paying a New York-based "design consultancy" big bucks, Amtrak has adopted a most insipid name for its new high speed trains. "Acela" is a meaningless string of letters concocted by an overpriced, mediocre consultant. Perhaps the experience of UAL Inc., United Airlines' holding company, in the late 1980s would be illustrative. UAL acquired Hertz Rent-A-Car and Western International hotels and attempted to reposition itself as a "total travel conglomerate". The name selected by UAL, "Allegis" was universally ridiculed and ultimately dropped. Donald Trump was widely quoted in the press as saying "Allegis" sounded like the next world class disease. "Acela" sounds like the HMO that handles cases of "Allegis". Other wags have commented that it's an acronym for "Amtrak Customers Experience Late Arrivals". Vranich was right.

Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science - book cover picture

Although there were times when I was reading Dr. Gawande's book, it felt like I was reading some great articles rather than a book (I later realized that is in fact how the book developed), I kept wanting to read more. First of all, this book is well written. It is not necessarily "enjoyable", because some of it is emotionally painful to read (when discussing pain!), but it is truly compelling. It is definitely a reality check and can even empower one to know what to ask and how to ask their doctor for options. We should see our doctors as human and science as less than perfect.

I am familiar with prayer that I interpret as not asking God to heal us, but rather to pray for doctors to have the strength of their wisdom. That is what this book is all about - a lay person's perspective on the realities of doctors and medicine.

I love this book.I have read it a lot of times very thoroughly.I usually look at it when I am going to go to a nice restraunt.I like it because it has lots of tips, letters from girls, cute illustrations, and quizzes.Even though it's supposed to be for girls,I think boys could probably learn some things from it.Also if you get it for your child, you might want to look at it.Once my family was hosting a fancy dinner, so my mom had to look at it to remember which silverware and drink glasses go where.I love this book!!

The Diversity of Life - book cover picture

I'm a freshman at college and I was required to read this for class. When I sat down to read this I thought it was going to be just another stupid book. I WAS WRONG! It is one of the most moving and motivating books I've ever read. Wilson backs up all of his ideas 110%. Though they are opinions, he makes some really good points. You'll want to be a biologist after reading it. You'll want to go out and not just plant a tree but a whole forest!
