Ulysses (Gabler Edition) - book cover picture

Enough! To those unmanned by the maze: you are not stupid by default if you despise every scrabble Joyce scribbled. Many intelligent people, including Virginia Woolf, saw nothing in Ulysses and less in the Wake. To others Ulysses is the liveliest and funniest book ever. To the academics who comb Ulysses--agile horse--for the nits of criticism (thereby insuring Joyce's immoraltality), please leave alone we who would enjoy without inheriting the immense debtorship of things better left undone. To those who would deny that Ulysses is the most important (not necessarily the best) novel ever written, the very fact that so many are compelled to constantly trash it is the ultimate tribute to its place. Finally, let it be known that Joyce swore on Ulysses, on the honor of a gentleman, which admittedly he was not: --There is not one serious word in it.

Grand Opening - book cover picture

I absolutely loved this book. It started out slow for me, so I ended up putting it down to read a different book. But when I finished my second book I had nothing else to do so I started reading "Grand Opening" again. I could relate to a lot of the characters, and I found myself wondering what I would do if I found myself in this situation. This was my first Jon Hassler book, but you can bet that it won't be my last!

Black Genius: African American Solutions to African American Problems - book cover picture

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Too many times the Black community is treated as if we all believe only one idea or follow one way of doing things. "Black Genius" brings out the qualities our many talented Kings and Queens by providing personal narratives with solutions to many concerns that effect the Black Community daily. I highly recommend this book. If you are concerned about issues in the Black community you wont be dissapointed.

Nineteen Eighty-Four (Penguin Twentieth Century Classics S.) - book cover picture

was Animal Farm predicting that pigs would walk in the future? NOI say this after hearing other peoples reviews, summaries and opinions of 1984. One should not look at 1984 as a prediction of the future, because it was not truly meant as such. George wrote this as a attack on the dictatorships of the USSR and Spain. It is a satirical work, and a brilliant one at that. However , because it is written so well, it takes on a somewhat timeless quality. This may be why so many people mistake the novel. Those foolish proles. tisk tisk tisk.

There Are No Children Here - book cover picture

This book takes on a 'true approach' to living in poverty, especially for blacks to live in poverty. I'm a social work undergrad college student, and until I read this book, I was'nt aware of exactly how it was in poverty. Alex writings in the book, made me feel as though I was living with the Rivers and feeling their emotions. Thank you Alex for writing this excellent book. I encourage all college students to read the book, especially social work students. It really made me understand how blessed I am. Now I'm trying to see how I can get a copy of the movie, Oprah Winfrey played the mother. I didn't even know there was a movie for it. Can't wait to see it!

Not About Nightingales - book cover picture

I love this play. I was fortunate enough to get to see it in New York with the entire original cast. The writting is beautiful. The play is so masterfully written that you won't want it to end. It's complete with the perfect ending, the perfect opening, the right amount of comedy and tragedy, and spectacular dialogue. The play is wonderfully engaging, and I would love to see it again. The characters are so clearly written and each have a life of their own. Get the play -- it's a masterpiece.

Taking stories seriously

Love's Knowledge: Essays on Philosophy and Literature - book cover picture

A collection of essays all of which present us with possibilities -- stories as moral teachers. We all learn from, care about, and revel in the stories that we read. Nussbaum takes seriously our ability to approach fiction with care and convincingly argues that we can extend this mode of being as ethical. If we approached the world with the care and attention we do characters in a book, we would be excercising a instinctively human morality. Beautifully written -- it can change your outlook on how we should see ourselves and the world.

Summer's End - book cover picture

This book was about a woman who never sees her husband because hes always away on business. Deanna is a really good painter, but her husband insists she paint for fun, that she didn't need a career and one in painting was for second rate people. At the begining of summer Deanna meets a art dealer who thinks her paintings are wonderfull and wants to sell them in art gallerys. In the mean time they fall in love ... and make a promise that the relationship will be over at summers end. Deanna feels guilty at first, but the more they are together, she forgets about her husband... and the more they begin to wish the summer will never end. Later Deanna finds out that her husband has been having a affair for years. I left out a considerable amount of the book. This book has tragedy, love, lies, decite and much, much more. I would definetly recommend this book!

Trilobites - book cover picture

If you love trilobite fossils this book is essential and wonderful. The photographs of fossil specimens are presented in chronological order and are simply breathtaking. Time and again I've returned to this classic for review or just to look at the dazzling variety of trilobites that have been carefully photographed. And what I really like about the book is that it makes it easy to share with family and friends just what is fascinating about this ancient creature.

In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz: Living on the Brink of Disaster in Mobutu's Congo - book cover picture

I sepnt too much of my life living in Kinshasa. Don't make the mistake I made -- read this book instead. Ms. Wrong has written a book that captures the Congo Conundrum: serious chapters about the IMF/ World Bank/ Western "policy" toward Congo and Africa are interspersed with zany episodes of life in a country that is no country. I've read the book twice, all my friends with Congo experience who've read it love it. Well done.
