Clearest Definition of Capitalism I've Read

Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal - book cover picture

Why didn't I read this in high school? Probably because I went to a government school. It is such a shame that so many people in the US know virtually nothing about capitalism and why it is the ONLY moral basis for a government. In school I was taught that FDR was the savior of the United States in the 30's. If you want to know what REALLY happened to cause the Great Depression read this book (hint: the government did it!). The fact that our government *allows* capitalism to exist in any form is the only reason we have such a high standard of living in the US. Read this book and you'll begin to see how much better off we'd be with Laissez-Faire capitalism.*sigh*

Essential reading for Lightworkers

Hands of Light : A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field - book cover picture

This incredible book is probably the most amazing thing you will ever read, whether you're experienced in energy work, or just starting out. It's one of those books that, as you read it, you watch various aspects of your life simply slot into place. It gives you access to the bigger picture. I have bought copies for many friends of mine, all of whom agree that the content is mind-blowing and life-changing. Barbara Ann Brennan is truly an angel sent to lead us gently and compassionately to the Light, and yet she seems so, well, human! and normal. The book will teach you so much about yourself, the Way Things Are, and guides you in your personal growth, allowing you to discover your true purpose. Yet it avoids that nasty pious, patronising tone that so many self-development books tend to have. I believe this is essential reading for all Lightworkers, and will motivate and inspire you to learn more.

The Eight - book cover picture

A co-worker suggested this book to me just last week. I bought it and started reading it. I could not put it down. It is quite a read but well worth it. It follows two different story lines that take place two hundred years apart, involving a mysterious ancient chess set, the secret it holds and the many players who have risked life and limb to attain it. The chapters go back and forth between 1790 and 1972 weaving the parallel story lines ever closer together. With every chapter the story gets deeper, more complex and MUCH harder to put down. This one is a don't miss.

Makes annoying Modernist techniques FUN!

Book title: To the Lighthouse

To the Lighthouse - book cover picture

Wow...simply wow. Well, the first obvious thing to do is compare this to Ulysess. It is a 'day in the life of' subjectivist steam-of-consciousness novel, like Ulysess (though much, much easier to understand...more like Joyce in "A Portriait" really...), but it also has Proustian elements on the nature of time and man's place in time. It's a simple story, almost too simple. A family and some friends live on the Isle of Skye in the Hebrides. That's about it. But, oh the Characters! Everylast one of them can be analyzed for hours and hours, yet none of them ever become less then believable. It's a wonderful, moving experience to read this novel. And for those of you worrying about the difficulty, don't. This isn't Finnegans Wake. Yes, you do have to pay more attention to it then say, a Daniel Steele novel, and it is by no means escapist, but it isn't anything that a slightly intelligent person couldn't figure out. And every slightly intelligent person should read this novel.

Great book, and not just for the action

Starship Troopers - book cover picture

I read this book and really liked it. When the movie came out I naturally watched it, knowing that it would be nothing like the book. However, the movie was even worse than I expected. Sure, it had great action and mediocre special effects, but it was totally lacked intelectually. In the book there is a lot of really thought provoking ideas about society. In the movie, nil. (My dad says I should pay no attention to his philosophy just because he was possiblly a nazi, but that is a load of @#$&, especially with the dog training analogy)

F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald) - book cover picture

Quite simply, "The Great Gatsby" is F. Scott Fitzgerald's tour de force.

It ranks among the most literate works of the twentieth century.

This story of the man who reinvents himself to win the woman he loves is multi-layered and laced with analogy upon analogy.

It is more than just a love story. "The Great Gatsby" is an indictment of the Jazz Age, new money and the shallow and selfish excesses that often accompany it.

Jay Gatsby is a true mystery man.

Even by novel's end he remains a shadowy figure lacking in substance or apparent texture.

He is as much a mystery to the reader as he is to his associates and neighbours in the East Egg social set.

Despite its numerous sub-texts, The Great Gatsby is ultimately a warning that, try as we may, we will never escape our pasts and that who we were is who we are.

Wow -- Perfect ODE book for an undergrad

Book title: Ordinary Differential Equations
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Ordinary Differential Equations - book cover picture

For math background, all that is needed for this book is a first semester in calculus. If you are looking for a book to learn ordinary differential equations (ODEs) from or for a second book for a class, buy this one. The book (which covers methods of solving/applying ordinary differential equations) are explained in just the right amount of detail--it isn't a novel, but it isn't something you should get too bogged down in. Also, there are LOTS of examples, which are all very helpful! The problem sets were put together very well--there are lots of problems and they start out easy and get harder. Also, one of the best things about this book is that it has most of the answers to problems! This makes this book more than sufficient for self-study. This is my favorite Dover Publications book!

Don't judge a book by it's cover !!!

Book title: Fatality

Fatality - book cover picture

"Don't judge a book by it's cover!!!" That's what I found out when I saw this book. It looked boring. Fatality...this book is a great book for people who like mystery, good, and twisted stories. My first opinion of this bood was proved wrong. When I started to read this book, it just pulled me in. I read it all day and all night. I just couldn't stop.
The author of this book is a really good writer. Caroline B. Cooney wrote other books like...Losing Christina: Fog, Losing Christina: Snow, and Losing Christina: Fire. I have not read all of these, but I will. This book is a book you would want to recommend to your friends. I did.

Book title: Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha - book cover picture

I found this book to be one of those things that you come across once in a great while that just makes you take a deep breath and sigh with the satisfaction that you are somehow different after reading it. I think those of you who say the book is flat and unemotional are not reading it with keeping the context it's written in in mind. This is the Japanese culture, where 'saving face' is everything, and showing emotion is considered weak. So although you may not always learn the true feelings of Sayuri, you are not supposed to be reading this story as YOU would have told it. That's important to keep in mind. The story is true to not only the anthropoligical facts, but also the Japanese culture. It is wonderfully written and an enchanting tale. I completely recomend it to anyone who wants to learn a little about the Geisha's world as well as their own.
