The Secret of Shambhala : In Search of the Eleventh Insight - book cover picture

James Redfield has successfully written another book which not only gives a better understanding of human evolution, but captures the essence of the human spirit in today's ever-changing world. Although the ending is a bit abrupt, Redfield manages to entwine his ideas into a story which captures and keeps the mind focused on what he is trying to express to the reader. I put the book down and wanted to start again from page #1! Previous Celestine reading is not a must, but definately recommended to fully understand the brilliant concept.

Well, really 4.75 stars

Book title: City of Bones

City of Bones - book cover picture

Connelly's detective (Harry Bosch) is as insightful, anti-authoritarian, and occasionally glum as always. The plot is twisting. And the action unfolds at a good but unexaggerated pace. It's great mystery/police-procedural reading. And yet it doesn't have the same spark and wit and personal quirks that the earlier ones (which are 5 stars plus) do. But start with earlier Bosch and come to this willing to cut some slack and it's well worth it. (The reader on the audio version (unabridged) has good voice characterizations that keep all conversations clear and add some emotion.)

Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea: Why the Greeks Matter - book cover picture

Thomas Cahill's Hinges of History series has illuminated several corners of history for the general reader, from medieval Ireland to the development of Judaism and Christianity. Now Cahill has turned to the ancient Greeks to demonstrate why they are important today. In a series of several chapters written in scholarly yet accessible to the general reader style, Cahill skillfully dissects Greek history, philosophy, drama, and morality. He shows us the Greek origins of many of our ideas about government, literature, and art, and ends with a chapter that demonstrates the intersections between the Greeks and the Judeo-Christian ideas which came to dominate so much of the world. Like the other volumes in this series, Sailing the Wine Dark Sea will entertain and inform.

Probably the most gruesome Mafia story ever told

Book title: Murder Machine: A True Story of Murder, Madness, and the Mafia

Murder Machine: A True Story of Murder, Madness, and the Mafia - book cover picture

Parts of this book were really gruesome and sickening, but after getting through those parts the story was very interesting. I bought this book because someone else wrote that it was the best Mafia book that they had ever read. I agree with that reviewer. I have lived in New York all my life (a few years in Canarsie and many in Ozone Park, while teaching in Howard Beach). I have always been surrounded by "that life" but I never realized the lengths these people went to to get rid of people that crossed them. Killing wasn't enough...they had to destroy and dismember the bodies as well. The one thing that I would like to know is how the authors got so detailed a story when most of the people involved were dead by the time this book was written, and I can't imagine that anyone with inside connections spoke to them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the Mafia but keep in mind that parts of this story are degenerate.

Mitford fans, rejoice!

Book title: In This Mountain (Mitford)

In This Mountain (Mitford) - book cover picture

The Mitford Series has been one of the greatest gifts possible for women who want to read clean, entertaining, high morals fiction. I've read every one at least twice.
I am over joyed to share another similar book I have just discovered. I borrow the advanced reading copy from a Sunday School friend who is a newspaper reviewer.
The Town That Came A-Courtin' by Ronda Rich is a perfect match to the Mitford Series. If you love Mitford, you're going to love Bliss, Mississippi. I highly recommend it.
Thank goodness that the publishing industry has finally recognized that there are readers out here like those of us who love books like the Mitford Series and The Town That Came A-Courtin'.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1) - book cover picture

This is the most exciting book I have read in a long time. The characters are very engaging, and each is unique without becoming a caricature. The sense of an entire world's history culminating in a fierce and dramatic confrontation in which the characters are well drawn and engaging is irresistable. I also love the way the landscape becomes such a real part of the story. The plains, the frozen Northern lands beyond the Wall, the fertile Southern valleys all become so real I could picture them. What else can I say? Martin brings together myth, adventure, fantasy, romance, just about everything that a great tale could possibly have. I eagerly await the sequel. It'll probably be the first hardbound book I buy new in years. I can't imagine waiting for the paperback version to find out what happens to the characters I have grown to care about.

I can't think of a good title at all

One Hundred Years of Solitude - book cover picture

The negative reviewers here seem, more or less, to want this book to move faster, or get to some kind of specific point, and are upset that it doesn't. So I'll make this suggestion, if you are reading to get to the end of a book, don't read this book; you won't deserve it. Read a Michael Chrichton book or something. On the other hand, if you are willing to be swept into an epic story that is written (and translated) with style and grace, plotted with a mature sense of wonder, and will make you weep, laugh, and seethe with anger, then read this one. No matter how many times I reach the last page of this book, I never feel like I've "finished" it. it always pulls me right back into it.

It Happened to Nancy : By an Anonymous Teenager, A True Story from Her Diary (Confident Collector) - book cover picture

Oh my gosh! My teacher knows I love books that are in a diary. She gave me this book and I fell absolutly in love with it. This story made me think twice about all guys. I think Nancy should have got a medal for all the things she was put through and then she died! I have a friend who was raped and ended up HIV-positive. I never realzed her hurt and pain until I read this book. I relized how bad she must have felt. She died last summer. I believe that everybody should read this book because it can really inform people and also let people who have been raped know they aren't alone. So overall I believe this book is the best I've ever read.
