From the Corner of His Eye - book cover picture

I'm not surprised to see reviews all over the board on this one, and yet still, it is such a wonderful novel. Yes Koontz has taken a more spiritual and fanciful turn but who can read this book and not ALWAYS think of "walking where the rain isn't". The characters are real and stay with you long after you've finished the book. I would wish that people who read it would just lay back and enjoy the ride. I was up several nites later than I should have been because the story line is so engrossing. But please, don't anyone tell my employer.

Enemy of God: A Novel of Arthur (Warlord Chronicles/Bernard Cornwell, 2) - book cover picture

Having read every book Mr Cornwell has published, I probably shouldn't dwell on a trivial issue, but it does bother me. In a number of places in the first volume there is refereces to spearmen marching through the CORN. Now I may have my history a bit confused, but I thought Corn was a north American grain that wasn't introduced to Europe until the 16th century! That coupled with the fact that Arthur is carrying a handful of cornflowers when he discovers Lance & Gwen in the temple of Isis, just bother me. There may indeed be wildflowers called Cornflowers in the British isles today, but I suspect that they were called something else in 498 AD.....

Amazing and Incredibly Engaging

Outlander - book cover picture

The written work is simply beautiful, the best historical novel since Captain From Castile. But I also must comment on Geraldine James' reading. It is an incredible piece of work. I would have never thought that someone could read in such a fashion that both presentation of male and female are equally real. She does it so well that at times I have wanted to cry and other times where I have simply laughed out loud. What an incredible display of talent. I hope somehow that this e-mail makes its way not only to the author but to this marvelous, talented presenter of her work. Thank you both for such a wonderful experience.

Wonderful and Amazing to read

Book title: Haveli
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Turtleback
Haveli - book cover picture

I first read Shubanu in the 8th grade as required reading, I loved the book. I recently read Haveli just to see if it was as good as the first and you know what? It was even better! Shubanu's struggles as a wife and young mother in a land where women are thought of as property. Her hopes and dreams are for her daughter, Mumtaz, to grow up with an education so that she can be better off. Tragedy stikes when Rahim, her husband, affanges for her friend, Zabo, to marry his idiot son. This marriage is doomed for Zabo and Shubanu must help her friend. At the same time she is dealing with Rahim's four other jealous wives who keep trying to harm Shubanu and her daughter. All of this is on top of her and she is only eighteen years old. This truely sheds light on the struggles of women in countries that think their only purpose is pleasure to men, childbirth, and property. I recommend this book highly for everyone to read.

A fun, quick read

Armchair Economist: Economics And Everyday Experience - book cover picture

A very fun, quick read. Slaughters many sacred cows, including the litany of ideas on the environment, deficits, illiteracy, unemployment, dollar-cost averaging, and the use of statistics. Many reviewers have criticized the last chapter of his book, which is about environmentalism. It is true to some extent that he is building straw men and tearing them down (though he does asknowledge he is referring to "naive environmentalism"). It is hard to disagree with his conclusion that much of environmentalism has little to do with science and more to do with religious ritualism.

Of Mice and Men (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century) - book cover picture

My name is Mandy Hedgepeth and I am a junior at Saint Mary's School in Raleigh, NC. My english class just completed "Of Mice and Men", by John Steinbeck. I thouroughly enjoyed this fascinating book. It shows a relationship between two very different people. Their adventures kept me on the edge of my seat at all times. The love these two men have for each other is remarkable. George and Lennie go through alot together and because of this their friendship becomes greater. In the end George is forced to decide how much he really loves Lennie. His choice, in my opinion, shows his love more than anything.

The Best of the Series

A Secret Love (Cynster Novels) - book cover picture

Okay Cynster series fans, this one is the best so far. I don't like to rehash what everyone has so aptly said about the plot. I will however add, that the review at the top of the page by Amazon has spelled the female protagonist's name wrong. It is Alathea not Althea. At any rate, you will enjoy this story, I believe, because their passion is both romantically told (not just raw) and mysterious. You won't put it down until the end, so don't plan on being interrupted to do anything for the rest of the day.

Plane Insanity: A Flight Attendant's Tales of Sex, Rage, and Queasiness at 30,000 Feet - book cover picture

I found this book lying on a seat after passengers disembarked (I'm a flight attendant) and started browsing through it,then reading it and then I couldn't put it down! It was hilarious and so true!! I could identify with every situation that happened in fact I could add some even more hilarious stories of my own. I enjoyed the whole book from the front to the end. I recommend this book to anyone who likes true light hearted humorous books. It will keep you glued and maybe next time you fly be a bitter nicer to the poor stewardess?.....

The Calculus of Consent : Logical Foundations of Constitutional Democracy (Ann Arbor Paperbacks) - book cover picture

Some reviewers comment that this book has "a conservative bias." Nothing could be further from the truth. This book is written in the great classical-liberal tradition that motivated the American revolution and the drafting of America's 1787 Constitution. Buchanan and Tullock saw themselves as putting into modern economic language the insights and wisdom of James Madison and Co. The book does indeed counsel skepticism of big government, and it is no great fan of unlimited democracy. But the authors come to this position because they understand that even democratic governments can be tyrannical and that a depoliticized society -- governed largely by private property rights -- promises peace, prosperity, and cultural flourishing. Few books on economics are as original and insightful as is The Calculus of Consent -- and it remains as fresh in 1999 as it was when first published in 1962.

Scarlet Letter - book cover picture

I'm an average 12 year old who read "The Scarlet Letter"!!!! And YES, I read the UNABRIDGED VERSION!!!! I was reading all these reviews in confusion. None of the words were complicated. I didn't have to use a dictionary. All in all, it is an excellent book. Although a bit monotonus at times, it is an excellent book with an excellent reflection of the times. I would recomend it, and even if you have to look up every other word, ITS WORTH IT!!!!
