Card proves his brilliance yet again.

Ender's Shadow (Ender) - book cover picture

I tore through this book in a day. A wonderful read, but also an absolutely superb example of how Card understands people and the human condition. This book will enrich you and your understanding of what motivates people, how they think, and what they feel. Though the book parallels Ender's game, it stands apart, and you need not have read one to appreciate the other. The story of Bean is brilliant unto itself.

Spoonbread & Strawberry Wine : Recipes and Reminiscences of a Family - book cover picture

I bought my first edition, a small paperback, in the 1980's when we lived in Laramie, Wyoming in a travel trailer. We spent 8 years there and I learned to cook well using this book. I still read it through at least once every year. It is literate, entertaining, educational and delightful. What more could you ask? I am anxious to get this newest edition. My original one is yellow and brittle with age, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I feel as though I know this family as well as my own and I wish the authors were my were my sisters!

Suspenseful!

Book title: The Ice Limit
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
The Ice Limit - book cover picture

This book is one long suspenseful ride that may have you biting your nails. We have a group trying to extract a meteor from one of the most brutal parts of the globe. Even with a virtually unlimited budget, they need to cope with a renegade navy destroyer, impossibly rough seas, terrible storms, and the "mysterious" meteor that defies all known scientific properties. The meteor weighs several times more than any known element on Earth and gives off deadly electrical currents at times for no apparent reason. You wonder just how the giant rock can be moved, much less lifted, and brought to a ship. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The ending seemed to pave the way for a sequel. The authors already had done a sequel to a previous work (Relic), so I am sure one is on the way. I definitely will buy it as soon as it is out.

The Thief Lord - book cover picture

Such a cool book! Runaways survive on their own in the streets of Venice, stealing and hawking their wares to a local shifty store-owner. Their leader, who calls himself The Thief Lord, is given an offer to steal a wooden wing from a quiet house. As they begin to wonder what is so special about a wooden wing sculpture. With bits of magic and mystery, intrigue and secrets, The Thief Lord is a wonderful book, exciting, and full of vibrant, funny characters. Great for adults and kids alike!

Son of Rosemary: The Sequel to Rosemary's Baby - book cover picture

I actually liked this book! Okay, the ending was sorta cheesy, but it was good. I think Levin closed out the Rosemary story perfectly...with a twist ending (and don't even TELL me you knew it was coming, because you didn't). The "roast mules" puzzle and the "Judith S. Karyhat" (go on, say it out loud-get it?) killing (thirty pieces of silver...hmmm) are very intriguing. Who cares if the ending was a cop-out? I loved this book as well as the original. So there.

Incredible

Book title: The Hammer and the Cross

The Hammer and the Cross - book cover picture

Having read other Harrison greats such as the Stainless Steel Rat, the Turing Option, Stonehenge, the Eden series and many others, I was not suprised by Harrisons ability to write a great story. What I was suprised by was the fact that he has managed to out do all his previous efforts with this his greatest work ever. Having a Scandinavian heritage may make me impartial in reviewing it but I know anyone who likes a good story will like the Hammer and the Cross. In fact, not only do I consider this Harrisons best, but I also consider it one of my personal favorites.

Bored of the Rings: A Parody of J.R.R. Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings - book cover picture

Stop taking yourselves so seriously. How can you love something SO much that it's not even possible for you to poke fun at it. Lord of the Rings is a classic series. I've read all of them countless times since I was a kid. And this book is hysterical. Why? Because the authors did their research, and this volume isn't meant to be cruel, just funny. Why don't some think so? Because many of you die-hards are unfamiliar with the concept of SATIRE. It's not meant to be insulting. Sure, some satire is. But this is simply good-natured ribbing. Get a grip on reality and stop taking what isn't even real life so seriously. This isn't a cross-burning, people. It's only a book. If you're going to be outraged about something, be a little more picky about it.

Love Always, Patsy : Patsy Cline's Letters to a Friend - book cover picture

When I first heard that this book was being published, I awaited patiently but eagerly. My patience was rewarded with a truly sensational personal account of the real Patsy Cline. The letters tell of an ordinary woman and an aspiring young country singer with the hopes and dreams of making it in the country music field and the closeness and personal relationship that occurred between Patsy and Treva Miller Steinbicker. The photos included depict a beautiful, vibrant young woman. Mike Freeman and Cindy Hazen has made it possible for me, in Patsy's own words, to have an up close and personal feel of the young woman with the tremendously powerful voice that I have admired for so long. This book is a definite must read for anyone who has and always will love Patsy Cline. Thanks Mike and Cindy, for a gift that will grace my library.

Frazier Captures The Heart of a Man and a Woman

Book title: Cold Mountain
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Cold Mountain - book cover picture

I've always felt that the way you view a novel or any other work of art is based upon where you currently are in life. I read this book while on deployment with the USAF in Bosnia. Frazier touched on some of the emotions that my wife and I have felt during this time of separation in our lives. Cold Mountain will leave you feeling cold, lonely and longing to go home. Frazier visually stimulates you with his accurate depiction on the Blue Ridge mountains. This is a must read for any history or Civil War fan. I would also recommend it for anyone who has ever been away from someone that they love.
