Bad Chili - book cover picture

Joe Lansdale is one of the most humorous writers out there today. From improbably probable situations (like Hap getting bit by a rabid squirrel) to tense, action packed scenes (including the tornado ending), BAD CHILI is the most fun you'll get in a suspense novel! Hap and Leonard are true friends, and their bantering is priceless. Lansdale knows how to use the most innovative dialogue and fleshed out, likeable characters, and he uses both Hap and Leonard, along with Jim Bob and Brett Sawyer, Clinton and Leon, Charlie, etc. The villains are nasty, and the plot deep and twisty. The romantic involvement between Brett and Hap is one of the most true to life and sexy encounters you'll find in fiction.
Lansdale is a great writer, one who knows how to write for his audience, entertain and intrigue them. It might be bad chili, but it's superb reading! Bon appetite!!!

A Little Princess : The Story of Sara Crewe (Puffin Classics) - book cover picture

"A Little Princess" is something I re-read every single year around the first snowfall. It helps me to imagine the drudgery poor Sara endured. This book has taught me that no matter what happens to you in life, you always have a choice about how you can react. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age. I would especially recommend the now out-of-print edition with the illustrations by Tasha Tudor if you can find it. Do yourself a favor and read this book at least once in your life.

Best Bosch Since 'Concrete Blond' and 'Last Coyote'

Book title: The Closers (Harry Bosch (Hardcover))

The Closers (Harry Bosch (Hardcover)) - book cover picture

This is the best Harry Bosch novel in some time and that's saying a great deal. Michael Connelly is a great writer, and as other reviewers have mentioned, has gone back to the basics and the 'core' of Harry Bosch. This book clearly deserves five stars. That said, the early pages of this book reminded me of T. Jefferson Parker's, 'California Girl', an absolutely sensational book. As good as 'The Closers' is, 'California Girl' is the better book - it just doesn't have the great Harry Bosch.

Sllepless reading

The Secret Life of Bees - book cover picture

It is rare that I find time (or energy) to read entire books these days. I asked my sister if she knew of an engaging (and short) novel for my vacation and she handed me this book. She said, "Just read it. You won't be able to put it down". And so she was right. While my child slept, and I did not, I finished the book in to evenings and found myself feeling empty and wanting for more. There are few books that drag us along on such a soulful journey in which the humidity of the south and the heaviness of mysticism and myth is palpable by the reader.

A wonderful romance..and the horror

The Phantom of the Opera (Bullseye Chillers) - book cover picture

The Phantom of the Opera is a wonderfully written book. The author did a great job of keeping the reading in suspense and horror. Additionally, he illustrates the sadness that love can bring. I have to admit in the beginning it was a little boring, but as you read on, you would love it. The ending is just fantasic. I recommend that you read this book or give someone this book for a gift if you / they love romance novals or if you / they just love to read a great book.

The Stone Skeleton : Structural Engineering of Masonry Architecture - book cover picture

this work covers quite thouroughly the mathematics and mechanics of arches. It spends particular time on construction in the Gothic cathedrals including the barrel vault, cross vault, dome, and flying butress. It is beautifully illustrated and it presents the basic concepts as well as giving a quite extenisive theoretical analysis. A good book for anyone familiar with masonry and an essential for anyone involved in repairing and maintaining Cathedrals and other large stone structures.

Bellwether - book cover picture

This is the best of all Ms. Willis' books, in my opinion. Some of her stories leave me a little melancholy and wishing I could share a little hope with the author. This book, with its picture of *good* people *living* together, left me full of hope for us all. (I loaned it to a friend who's dad was dying to share the hopeful glow.) I love the nooks and crannies that she shows us in her character's personalities and wonderland she shows in every day life. This is not a science fiction book, but I put it right up there with Asimov, Robinson, and RAW (on a good day) for synchronicity, puns, fate, and purposefully making the best of what the universe hands you.

Feet of Clay (Discworld Novels (Audio)) - book cover picture

I liked this book. When I first picked it up, I knew pretty much what I wanted. I was looking for a nice Vimes episode, something to fill up the boring hours in between an otherwise pretty dull life(in otherwords, holiday time). The first couple of pages didn`t seem so engrossing, but as the story progresses, it becomes more and more addictive. On top of that cunning old Pratchett seems to have a dislike of chapters, and when you see only four small and insignifigant asterisks seperating you from the next scene, it`s like a heroine addict sitting and staring at a loaded syringe(no I have had no such experience). The plot is intriguing, with a murderer walking (or stomping) free on the streets of Ankh Morpork, Vetinari on the verge of death(amazing, huh?) and Commander Samuel Vimes on the loose, trying to find the questions to answers which he knows are floating around soomewhere. For Terry Pratchett(especially Vimes)fans, this book is a must.

Do Less, Achieve More: Discover the Hidden Power of Giving in - book cover picture

I loved this book. It is a wonderful blend of East/West ideas. I found the author easy to read without being facile. This book is not a self help book or a time management book, it is about developing a whole way of being in the world and spirituality. I loved the way she weaved the story of the Rainmaker in to the book. I found reading the book gave me a sense of peace and helped me find my centre. It taught me to learn to relax and let the universe unfold as it should, and this philosophy has changed my life. I feared I would find the book to "New Age" but the author employs a style that is very down to earth.

Noah Webster : The Life and Times of an American Patriot - book cover picture

In his preface, the author notes that Noah Webster is so famous for his dictionary that it's overshadowed his many other achievements. Too true! I was amazed to learn of Mr. Webster's achievements in politics and education reform, particularly the influential role he played in shaping the U.S. Constitution. This book is a Must Read for anyone who wants a deeper and more accurate view into early American history.
