Arms and Armor of the Samurai - book cover picture

This book is an excellent primer on the forms and construction of Samurai arms and armour. There are detailed illustrations of the different sections of armour, including correct terminology in both English and Japanese. There are also diagrams of the cording techniques used to connect pieces together. Lavish color illustrations and a glossary of terms makes this work a real find. A top reference work on the subject.

Crowfoot Ridge is a book I will read a second time.

Book title: Crowfoot Ridge
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Crowfoot Ridge - book cover picture

There are not many books I will read twice---The Great Gatsby, A Dangerous Fortune, The Razor's Edge, to name a few stories I have read over and over. I received Ann Brandt's Crowfoot Ridge from on a Thursday and by Friday night I was finished. On Sunday afternoon I started on chapter one again, this time reading more slowly to catch and savor every nuance. Ann has a way of turning a phrase that the seasoned reader will appreciate and a new reader, or a novice writer, will want to mark with his or her yellow highlighter. Not only is the book well-written, but it is a fine and evocative story as well.

the ultimate tribute to the american combat infantryman

Doing Battle : The Making of a Skeptic - book cover picture

for anyone who ever experienced ground combat, regardless of conflict, this memoir by one of our most highly respected literary scholars, stands as the ultimate tribute.more than a book,it is an instructional text on how a sane and rational man who has experienced the absolute horror of armed conflict from the viewpoint of the infantry soldier, may maintain some semblance of sanity in an insane world. those of us who share that part of his backround, owe an unpayable debt to him. in a way,he has become what one of his subjects was in his earlier'the great war and modern memory'. it was wilfred owen,poet/soldier who gave us our warnings, paul fussel has done the same and we still don't quite get it.

Where does Joss Ackland end and Joseph Conrad begin?

Book title: Lord Jim
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Audio Cassette
Lord Jim - book cover picture

If you have already listened to Ackland's reading of 'Heart of Darkness' you might suspect that it would be impossible for a rendition of a lesser-known work to live up to the impossibly high standards that the extrraordinary combination of writer and reader had set.Let me put your mind at rest, this is, perhaps to my own surprise, if anything, even better still.Ackland makes Conrad's character's voices entirely his own.The words spring to life and build pictures so vividly that TV, movies and even real life experience are all made to seem less memorable and compelling. The emotions and thoughts of the characters seem so convincing that to reflect upon the fact that this is fiction whilst you are listening to it, is to entertain the unimaginable.Like certain collections of music, the recording is unimpaired by endless replaying. If I could only ever have one audio book, it would be this one.

Lois Lowry has a very vivid imagination! I loved this book!

The Giver (Newbery Medal Book) - book cover picture

This book really gave me a great insight on what would happen if there was no color, no feelings. Jonas' Community has no hate, pain, or suffering, because without feelings or color, there won't be fighting. Also in the book there was no religion. These three things are the main reasons war started. Somehow they got rid of them and that helped them make no war. But in doing that there haad to be no love. I think this book would be great for 6th graders like me because it gives you an insight to Waht If?

The Best Crichton Novel I've read yet!

Book title: Airframe
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Airframe - book cover picture

So far, I have become a Crichton fanatic, reading THE LOST WORLD, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, and JURASSIC PARK. All of them being good (some being better than others), but this being the best, I zipped through it in a few days, never knowing what was going to happen yet, getting fascinated in Airplanes while I notice the excellent storytelling by Micheal Crichton. He gives accurate detail, a solid story, and the best characters he's made yet. Slowly but surely, I believe his SPHERE will beat this out as my favorite book written by him (I haven't finished it yet), but for now, it's his best book. I wish I never finished it because I wanted it to go one forever.I especially liked the way he played Dick Shenk, Jennifer Malone, and Mardy Reardon out. It seemed just like the way reporters would be. Excellent book, Crichton's best.

Exciting with every increasing pace

Book title: Cold Cold Heart
Rating: 5/5

Cold Cold Heart - book cover picture

We thought the book, which we understand is Elliott's first, to be an exciting thriller. The villan, not unlike Hannibal by Harris, or Becker by Sandford, was scary in his hunting for further victims. The hero, Culley was left out to dry by his former employers, the CIA, and brought into the hunt to save their face. He meets a reporter who was a former detective and with a number of other interesting characters in the book, the hunt is on!! A very good read!

Sex and Death in Early Victorian New York

Rating: 5/5

The Mysterious Death of Mary Rogers: Sex and Culture in Nineteenth-Century New York (Studies in the History of Sexuality) - book cover picture

Amy Srebnick has written a marvelously entertaining book of early Victorian New York, that along with the Murder of Helen Jewett by Patricia Cohen, takes the reader into a fascinating period of New York history. As an alien in this city, it is wonderful to see how the idea of New York grew out of this period. This short book manages to touch on many, interrelated topics showing how the death of Mary Rogers was used and manipulated by many people for their own political or social purposes, while her life before her death remained a mystery. People interested in the early history of the growth of abortion legislation would also be fascinated in the ways in which this touchs Mary Roger's own death. It is a fascinating book that has already led me to others covering this period.
