One Better - book cover picture

This book touched me very deeply and made me think. It was extremely well written and I am so proud of the growth Ms. McMillan is making with every book. I laughed, cried, grieved, and rejoiced along with all of the characters. I think there's a little bit of Spice, Carmen, Sterling and Mink in all of us at one point or another in life. BRAVO.I couldn't put it down (and didn't want to) I'm anxiously awaiting your next masterpiece. God Bless You for keeping it Real.

The Trumpet of the Swan - book cover picture

The Trumpet of the Swan is about a swan that is born with a speech problem. His name is Louis, and he cannot talk. At all. His dad- the old cob- steals a trumpet for him in Billings, Montana. Louis needs a job so he can pay for his trumpet and the damage to the glass window(it crashed when the cob went through). He gets a job as camp bugler at a boys' camp and earns one hundred dollars. After camp he heads to Boston. He paddles in front of the Swan Boats every day playing music. With that, he earns five hundred dollars. Then he "sails to Philadelphia"
-heh heh- and gets a job at a nightclub during his stay at the zoo.
Then he flys back to Montana with his fiancee and they all live happily ever after.

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson - book cover picture

When I first caught sight of the book my mom had gotten me titled "ANGUS, THONGS, & FULL-FRONTAL SNOGGING" I hesistated to pick it up since I am not one to talk about lingere or kissing. Actually it's probaly the last thing I would talk about to anyone. I eventualy got curious and opened the cover. From then on I was hooked. The opening letter from Georgia is enough to keep anyone curious. Georgia is simply hilarious, and her outrageous misadventures keep you reading because you never know what will happen to Georgia next. As Georgia struggles with her chaotic life between her half-wit parents and a gorgeous guy she's chasing things in her life never seem to go as planned. I would recomend this book to almost anyone. I even read a few parts of the book to my brother and he seemed to get a laugh or two out of it. Like I said don't be cautious when you see the title of the book and remember... never judge a book by it's cover!

A Cold Sassy Read

Book title: Cold Sassy Tree
Rating: 5/5

Cold Sassy Tree - book cover picture

borrowed Cold Sassy Tree from my mother-in-law. The title just caught my attention, and has been doing so every time I see or hear it for a couple of years now. So, when I realized she owned it, I decided to break down and read it. I am very glad I did. It was wonderful. Superb. Brilliant.Cold Sassy Tree took me back in time to a place oddly familiar. Cold Sassy could really have been my own back yard in my hometown (Eastern KY). The people all brought real people to mind, and the atmosphere of the novel kept me flipping pages, praying for more. They even tempted me to try apple pie with cheese (though I haven't given into that temptation yet). Mostly, the book made me think of my grandparents. I wish they had kept journals how the narrator in this book did. It was a fabulous read, and I have no complaints whatsoever.

Dreadful Sorry (Point Signature) - book cover picture

Although it has been over a year scince i read this book, i still clearly remember how much i loved it. I was drawn to do a search on this title becuase i am looking for the book to give as a birthday gift. My best friend has loved this book for years and she has read it so many times that she has been forced to use both scotch and duct tape to repare the cover of the book. My friend and i are both 16, and although this book is written for 12-13 year olds, i have no shame in telling you that this a tremendous book. The reader will be instintly sucked into the plot and characters and will feel a wide range of emotions. One moment i was full of admiration for Jared and the next i could feel nothing but disgust for Clementine, the past life of Molly. All in all, i would definitly recomend this well written book!

The most enjoyable and probably best book I have ever read

Book title: The Forgotten Soldier
Rating: 5/5

The Forgotten Soldier - book cover picture

This book profoundly changed my life. Its sheer epic contents regarding human endurance and perseverance is simply impeccable. Guy Sajer was a dignified Frenchman who found himself suddenly thrust into a world of total war - consequently he suffered incredibly, but miraculously survived to tell a tale that sheds light significantly on the extreme capabilities of human nature. Having read this book I feel a better person.

Seductive Poison - book cover picture

I can't remember when I've enjoyed a non-fiction so much. Sad indeed, yet funny in many places, Layton has given life and language to the silenced voices of those who were lost in Jonestown. After ten years of success in California with Jim Jones becoming Director of the Human Rights Commission and garnering himself a political position as Head of San Francisco's powerful Housing Authority, a young journalist began to take a closer look and trouble began to brew for the minister. This is when he moved his flock of hunderds to a failing fortress in South America which he so egotistically named after himself, JonesTown. This is a rich and vibrant book which brings history alive in an entirely readable and inclusive way. Its time we all took a closer look at how these organizations work.

The New Professional Chef - book cover picture

Great book that I used in culinary school. It is easy to follow and found it quite helpful with many of my culinary classes. If you want a great study guide for nutrition class, I recommend:
Nutritional Study Guide for Food Service and Culinary Professionals: Key Review Questions and Answers, isbn is 1933023058. This study guide has similar kind of questions that I experienced on my nutrition exams in culinary school. The New Professional Chef will be also a great reference for years to come.

A Dark Masterpiece

Book title: Leaving Las Vegas
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Leaving Las Vegas - book cover picture

"Leaving Las Vegas" is a dark tale that is not meant for the timid reader. It is real, it is gritty, it is graphic, it is depressing, and it is beautiful all at the same time. This book seriously deserved more credit than it recieved in its year of release, for it is a beautifully written account of unconditional love and loss in Sin City. Compulsively readable, and shatteringly honest, this is a book that will stay with you because of its frank and gorgeous language.

Anne of Avonlea (Illustrated Junior Library) - book cover picture

L.M. Montgomery again captures the refreshing innocence of Anne Shirley in this delightful sequel to Anne of Green Gables. Anne still finds herself in and out of "mischief." Reading about the many antics of now grown-up Anne will bring a smile to both young readers and adults. I enjoyed this book as a young girl and enjoy rereading it now. As a teacher myself I can appreciate Anee's many dilemas.
