Best Way to teach a baby to Sleep

The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night - book cover picture

I loved this book. I could not bear to let my daughter "cry it out". What a cruel thing to do to a tiny child who just wants love. With another baby on the way, this book helped to gently get my daughter out of my bed and sleeping happily in her own bed. She sleeps all night (unless she's sick) and she knows if she needs us, she can come in to our room to get us, or that we will go to her. She has no reason to feel any anxiety, and goes right back to sleep if she actually does wake before morning. This book is the best. No baby would ever have to cry it out if all moms read this book, and no mom would deprive herself of the joy of snuggling in bed with their newborn if that is what they want to do...knowing that it is easy and painless to change that habit when baby gets older. I'll use the tips in here to develop better sleep habits from the start with my next child.

a piece of art

Geek Love - book cover picture

This book is a beautiful piece of art. Great descriptions of totally unusual characters. The story centers around a family of sideshow freaks. The mother intentionally ingested chemicals to produce the deformities in the offspring---if that sounds intriguing--you find this out in the first 2 pages and it gets stranger from there.
After reading this, I've tried to find more of her work, but unfortunately most bookstores don't carry her stuff (i guess i'll have to get it here). A unique, thought provoking read.

Economic Literacy : What Everyone Needs to Know About Money & Markets - book cover picture

I am a techy and joined workforce in 2000. I started sensing the bubble and the bust and was really insecure about what the world and job market would look like once all this is over. Realized I need to learn something about economics which until then I thought was a boring dry bunch of theories of no use.

Well this book changed my life, I joined MBA and got a whole new perspective towards life.

A must read for any novice.

Bushwhacked : Life in George W. Bush's America - book cover picture

Like a recovering alcoholic, I came to this book out of shame and desperation. You see I am a Republican and, yes, I voted for George Dubya in the last election (much to my regret). I was fooled once, but I will not be fooled again; and when the next Presidential election rolls around, I and millions of my fellow "dupees" will rise up and toss this puppet for the elite out on his ear...ditto for the Congress as well. Sadly, the Repubs have lost their way and will pay for it with many years out of power. Hopefully, the small businessmen, who were the original backbone of this once great political party, will eventually rebuild it and exile the crony capitalists forever.

Magic, tears, and love, with a large twist of reality

Weetzie Bat (Charlotte Zolotow Book) - book cover picture

The start of the Weetzie Bat Series, Weetzie Bat is the opener for a wonderful tale. A personal suggestion: read Dangerous Angels so you can read all of the tales in order, but if you aren't sure you are going to like Ms. Block's writing, start with Weetzie Bat and move on to Dangerous Angels (the compilation of the 5 Weetzie Bat Books) if you do like it. This is a wonderful, magical book of love and tears that almost anyone can relate to in some way. Read it, you won't regret it!

Bob Marley: Songs of Freedom - book cover picture

Songs of Freedom truely gave me as a Bob Marley fan a better look at the life of a legend. Next to Bob's biography, Catch a Fire, this is the best acount of Bob Marley I have read. Songs of Freedom is filled with unseen photgraphs and quotes from Bob's loved ones, friends, and colleagues. An excellent story that has touched me deeply. I give this book a strong recomendation to life long Marley fans and those who have yet to discover the mystery, inspiration, and spirituality in this mans life.

The ignoble hero accomplishes an impossible task

Going Postal: A Novel of Discworld - book cover picture

"Going Postal" presents a wonderful picture of a condemned criminal who, given a second chance at life, uses every (unsavoury) skill at his command to survive till he can escape back to his wicked habits--er, do some good in the world after all. This should be read back-to-back with Pratchett's "Night Watch," which features a NOBLE hero accomplishing an impossible task. I will warn you, however, that for a certain type of mind, Pratchett's writings can quickly become addictive.

Orchestration - book cover picture

This is one of my very favorite books--not merely one of my very favorite orchestration books, not merely one of my very favorite music theory books. I read it again and again--sometimes for information, sometimes for entertainment. Its prose is lively and stylish; its advice is practical and to the point; it amuses; it inspires. By the bye, William Bolcom's new introduction is my favorite introduction to any book. Also recommended: PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

Cynical and touching

Book title: Old Goriot (Penguin Classics)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Old Goriot (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

Of course there is a paradox, but Balzac manages to make this story touching while being extremely cynical about his characters. Old Goriot is a man who worked all his life and then ruined himself to enable his daughters to marry rich. In this he was successful, they both live comfortably as spouses of rich bourgeois. Ironically, they are ashamed of their father's modest background and have virtually stopped seeing him, not to mention taking care of him. Thus he spends his old age in a dismal pension, roaming the streets in the hope of a glance of his daughters - of whose success he is still proud. There is not even a hint of sentimentality in this novel, nor does Balzac pass any easy judgments. This is C19 realism at its best. Turn to this Frenchman to find what no author writing in English managed to do in that century.

The best gap filling Babylon 5 book ever written

Book title: In the Beginning (Babylon 5)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
In the Beginning (Babylon 5) - book cover picture

The movie "In the Beginning" has not yet been shown in my country and that is why I can not compare the book with the movie. Besides, I don't feel a good book should be compared with the movie it is based on. "In the Beginning" is a wonderful book. It keeps in line with almost everything in the Babylon 5 universe. Characters, dates, places, occurences, it all feells right. Any B5 fan, who has seen all of the show, such as myself, would feel at home. Although it is regretable that gaps in the story arc are filled in movies and books instead of in the show itself, the book is a "must read" for any one who wants to truly understand what led to the creation of the Babylon project, what really happened in the Earth-Minbari war and how it all comes together. Very important info is passed along in the book. The story itself is well written, fluent and enjoyable. I most deffinetly recommend!
