Definitive XML Schema - book cover picture

At first, I found the format a bit cumbersome -- it is not necessarily well-suited to individuals that want only a high-level understanding of XML Schema. However, after getting involved in a project that required defining equivalences between XML Schemas and a proprietary type system, I found this book to be extraordinarily useful and thorough. It now has lots of highlighted sections and tabbed pages. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the need to invest significant time in understanding XMLSchema.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) - book cover picture

Having been disappointed with Book 5, I wasn't sure what to expect for Book 6. The first two chapters were a little on the dry side but starting at Chapter 3, the tale spun ahead and carried me through to the end, when I sobbed with heartfelt sorrow. The story was more tightly knit than in the last book and many loose ends were tied, with references to the past that help weave Book 6's tale. Tied with Prisoner of Azkaban, this is definitely my favorite of the series!

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Perennial Classics) - book cover picture

You can see, hear, and taste Brooklyn in the early 1900's while reading this book. I connected with Francie, the heroine, on the first page and loved her by the time I reached the end. I finished the book last night and must find a new book to fill the feeling of vacancy in my heart today. While it's pretty hard to impress me these days, this book made it onto my 'absolute favorite, must read list' of books...please don't miss this one.

Maniac Magee (Newbery Medal Book) - book cover picture

Hello I am laquoia and the book maniac magee was a good book to read but, i did not like most of the reading. i thought the book was a bit racism because the west end had to stay in the west end, and it was the same for the east enders.i would compare this book to the world because in LA it's kind of the same instead it's just crips and bloods. i will convice you to read this book because it's a very interesting book and it show how people can go through some things and still make it through life.

The author Elie Wiesel captures the tragedy of the Holocaust in great detail. The book Night speaks of Elie's childhood as he spends a year in different consentration camps run by the Nazi's. Wiesel illustates the horrible conditions of these camps and the cruelty that takes place inside. I really enjoyed this book because it gives the reader an inside view into one of the worst tragedy's in world history. As we look back this horrible time we reliaze how important life truely is.

Buddhism in Contemporary Tibet: Religious Revival and Cultural Identity - book cover picture

For anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism and what is going on in contemporary Tibet as a culture zone within China, this book is essential reading. Actually for anyone interested in the humanitarian side of helping Tibetans, it is essential reading as it explains the centrality of Tibetan Buddhism to Tibetan identity. As a student of Sogyal Rinpoche for many years, I am particularly interested in David Gemano's wonderful analysis of the impact of the work of Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche in East Tibet. Both he and Sogyal Rinpoche are regarded as reincarnations of Lerab Lingpa, the Dzogchen teacher of the 13th Dalai Lama. I am waiting for Gemano to write a whole book, expanding his insights.

Alice in Wonderland (Norton Critical Edition Ser.) - book cover picture

I first viewed this version when it came out in 1985. I was enthralled by it then and still love it today (I have a well-worn VHS copy from the tv.) It brings the story to life in a way that no other attempts have achieved.
A few friends and I have been searching for this version for ages and are thrilled to have finally found it. It's strange, but I would almost place this particular "Alice" into the cult classic category. Children and adults alike will completely fall in love with this classic, I'm sure.

Rubyfruit Jungle - book cover picture

I loved this book! I actually was talking to it on one or two occasions! There is so much spit and life in Molly, and she had much to teach me. The only thing that set back my rating for it was the "tomorrow is another day" ending. I would rather have seen her physically triumph over everyone, but emotional triumph is the next best thing, maybe even a better thing. Overall a beautifully crafted tale, and an adventure and a half for readers

Neverwhere - book cover picture

George Lucas once said that a story is only as effective as its villian, and Neil Gaiman certainly took that to heart! Let me star by saying that I LOVED this book, and I hated to see it end. The setting is brilliant, the puns clever, the characters were unforgettable and I can only hope this is the start of a series that Mr. Gaiman plans on continuing. The highlight however, for me, were the villians Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar. Two rogues so ghastly and vile, so audaciously disgusting that most other antagonist from best sellers pale by comparison. My hats off to you, Mr. Gaiman, you have created a masterpiece!

The Fat of the Land : The Obesity Epidemic and How Overweight Americans Can Help Themselves - book cover picture

I really enjoyed this book. I did not agree with every one of the author's statements, but I think he gave a very good, thoroughly researched account of his opinions. The main point of the book is that due to lifestyle changes over the last 30 to 40 years, living in America is like riding "a conveyor belt to obesity". He explores the various lifestyle factors which are contributing to our national weight gain, and talks about common-sense, do-able ways to change these factors. The main point of the book: you may be fat now, but you can definitely slim down and don't need a magic potion to do so. This is an excellent book to give a foundation of knowledge to help the reader make sense of all the diet and exercise information that continually bombards them, and separate fact from fiction.
