A tender and tragic tale

Spinners - book cover picture

Napoli and Tchen weave a beautiful and bitter-sweet tale that takes this fairy tale to a new level. Based on the age old story of Rumpelstiltskin, Spinners delves into the story behind the story. The Spinner is a tailor who loves a woman so desperatly that he would do anything for her, even spin straw into gold. When he promises her father to clothe his love in gold he has to make good on his word. But his ever faithful love marries the drunken old miller instead. But she is with the Spinner's child.
Fifteen years later, the spinner returns to his village and saves his daughter, who likewise has a gift for spinning, from the fate imposed upon her by the king.
Beautiful retelling of the classic fairy tale, poignant and moving. I was unused to the tense in which the story was written, but it soon became natural to read as if it were just happening. If you have ever read Napoli's other books, such as Zel you will love this one!

Black Letter on Criminal Law (Black Letter Series) - book cover picture

This textbook is a testament to the fact that Richard Bonnie is truly one of the giants in the field of criminal law. Everything this man writes is valuable; the chapters on mental health and insanity alone make purchasing this book worthwhile (Bonnie is an expert on the insanity defense). This book definitely leant itself to rich and provocative classroom discussions. I enjoyed the book almost as much as I enjoyed his class. I would recommend this text to any professor who is interested in spicing up his or her criminal law classes.

The Bell Jar (Perennial Classics) - book cover picture

I first read this work when I was in about 9th grade. However, because I had been so young and it had been so long ago when I read it I couldn't really remember anything but key elements and such. So, I decided to pick it up and read it again. This amazing work really gives you some insight of how sometimes privileged people fall to pieces. She paints a vivid picture of how painful life was like for her, and how she felt completely alienated by everyone except her therapist. The ending could be seen as a bit rushed, but the general feeling remains in tact. Definitely a great book to learn more about severe depression, and about her life.

Make Lemonade - book cover picture

i just finished this book, and i was compelled to write a review immediately because it was that good.this is quite possibly the best novel written in verse i have ever come across. there is a clarity in the story that is strikingly beautiful, the kind of clarity that will make the story fall into you. it will make you remember it, or maybe it will remember you.please don't pass this one by. it is a must read. let lavaughn's determination be your determination. let jolly's success be your success. let yourself fall in love with jeremy and jilly. because this story will let you. this story made me want a lemon tree. it made me want to make things grow. it made me want to spend a bright, sunny summer afternoon drinking fresh lemonade with thoughts of beautiful things in my mind. it made me wish the world was beautiful, but it made me realize that, in a way, it is.

Encapsulates Japanese/American tensions through meat

My Year of Meats - book cover picture

Fabulous cynical fictional look at the world of advertising and food. Protagonist Jane is invited to produce a corporate-sponsored documentary on the use of meat in America for Japanese television. Cross back and forth to Japanese housewife Akiko, whose husband works on the Japanese side of the deal. Hilarious, pretty biting and reasonably unpleasant - honest? - about the meat industry. One of the best food-related books I've seen, and I've seen a lot.

Texturing and Modeling: A Procedural Approach - book cover picture

The first edition was outstanding for the sheer breadth of its coverage of ways of producing natural-appearing textures via computation. Coupled with an easy-to-read prose style and good examples and color plates, it'll make you think of ways of doing apparently unrelated things you'd never have thought of otherwise. I only got a glimpse of the second edition, but this has been a busy field the last five years, and I fully expect the second edition to be as useful and interesting as the first.

On the human aspect and impact of the quest for knowledge

The Ascent of Man - book cover picture

I grew in my teens watching, rerun after rerun, Jacob Bronowski's TV series "The Ascent of Man", from which I took my love for science; science as a very human activity, beautifully described by Mr Bronowski, and his words have well resisted the test of time as I read this book based on the series, and which I inevitably lend to anyone I know who have a thirst for the adventure of knowledge.

The Mists of Avalon - book cover picture

This was a well written book that no fantasy lover should overlook, especially if your into Arthurian Legend. But this book goes far beyond telling the legendary story of King Arthur. It is told from the point of view of the women in Arthur's life. This book also highlights religious struggle at the time. The firm believers of the Old ways and the New Christianity that has drawn many Britons to it. I tended to take favor to the pagan side, but I thought both sides were written beautifully. You must read this book.

Our Town : A Play in Three Acts (Perennial Classics) - book cover picture

This play is very moving. It teaches how important the things we take for granted really are. I cannot understand all the reviewers who disliked this play so much because even if they did find it somewhat boring, it only takes about an hour to read: not much of a loss. Maybe one day they will understand the meaning of this play and realize that it truly is a classic. Because it is so short, I'm not going to bother with a plot synopsis. All I can say is: give it a chance.

The Bible for Children : From the Age of Gutenberg to the Present - book cover picture

This book is for you if you are interested in how we, throughout history have changed the way that we present God to children. In great depth, this book shows how the earliest Children's Bibles had a very different way of telling the stories in the Bible to children and how the culture of the day affected what stories were told and how the information was presented. I feel that it is important to look at this today, in order that we are more careful about the theology that we present to young children; theology that can stay with them a lifetime. This book is also beautifully illustrated, with pictures from many very old books and Bibles. Anyone that enjoys church history or history of childhood will appreciate the care and great effort put into this remarkable book.
