A new bedtime classic to rival Goodnight Moon

Book title: Rabbit's Bedtime
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Rabbit's Bedtime - book cover picture

This simple and beautiful bedtime story begins with the mother rabbit tucking in her little one and asking "What was good about today?". With simple text and lovely collage illustrations the rabbit's day is recalled. The little rabbit's day is a study in balance with time for work, play, music, dance, painting, time with friends and time alone, etc. At the end the question "What was good about today?" repeats and is answered with "A lot of things I would say".My kids (ages 3 and 22 months) both love this story and insist on hearing it every night. It has sturdy carboard pages that they can turn themselves (but it is not a true board book). Our 3 year old attends a Waldorf preschool and the rabbit's day reminds me of the rhythm of her preschool day so much that I am planning on buying a copy of this book for each of her classmates. This book would make a great baby gift which I think could be enjoyed from birth to age 5 or 6.

Definitions of Mother

My Mother, My Self - book cover picture

What I loved most about this book was that the women who gave birth to us are our mothers, but women who teach us life lessons are also our mothers. The definition of mother grows with our abilities to accept more nurturers and teachers in our lives. It is very important to accept the fact about our mothers that they were only human and did the best they could, but that's another life lesson that can ripple more globally.Ultimately, this book is about choosing mentors and tolerance for human frailties. I'm glad it's still in print.

a benevolent look at the grotesque nature of human beings

Book title: Winesburg, Ohio: Text and Criticism (Viking Critical Library)

Winesburg, Ohio: Text and Criticism (Viking Critical Library) - book cover picture

This book from 1919 really deserves to be read more often and by more people. It is a collection of 23 linked short stories, and is prefaced by a very strange frame narration called "The Book of the Grotesque." Anderson's basic premise is that any time a person clings to a notion of truth, he or she becomes grotesque. This is an interesting rallying cry for cultural relativism, particularly given the time period in which it was written. The stories themselves, which tend to have a quiet, almost meditative tone reflective of small town life in the midwest, are subtle. They usually concern only one or two people in the town of Winesburg, and usually depict a point where the character goes wrong, usually because of stubbornly clinging to a misguided belief or idea. The stories are further linked by the young man George Willard, who for a while serves as the town's newspaper reporter. Highly recommended!

Great novel!

Waiting in Vain - book cover picture

Compelling! Real! Open! Sexual! These are just a few of the words that come readily to mind about Colin Channer's 'Waiting In Vain'. How often does an author come along who can so openly and convincingly describe the sensitive side of a man? Being a woman, it was like a breath of fresh air to see this 'softer' side revealed in print. Being Jamaican, I found the references so real, they felt almost tangible. Thank you Colin Channer for creating - in your gifted way - such a wonderful blend of prose, poetry and music to make this one of my most memorable novels yet.

Evolution of the Mammalian Brain ca 1990.

Evolution of the Brain: Creation of the Self - book cover picture

Sir John Eccles has written a gem. The book is mostly devoted to the evolution of the Hominid Brain and Skull. There is a good discussion and overview of CNS neurophysiology. This book is the main book to start with on the subject of Brain Evolution. The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution goes into more detail on the Primate Brain. The Encyclopedia should be used as a reference book alongside Eccles book. Eccles understanding of the nervous system was better than most other scientists at the time this book was written. Falk wrote a book worth looking at. Primate Brain Evolution is out of print, but can also complement the approaches in the other texts.

A few reviews gave this book a one rating. Throw their reviews out since most reviewers gave this book a 5 star rating.

This is a classic book to be read by the young, and older folk, especially the former who may never have heard of a guy named Hitler.

I guess you can never satisfy everyone, and some people live to be different from the vast majority. They can say that they trashed Mr. Wouk or Hemingway or Faulkner...on-and-on. It puts them in the spotlight for a nanosecond, and gets people like me angry enough to write about their silly reviews in such forums.

Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries) - book cover picture

The cover art had me interested enough to pick up this book last year and read the back cover. The synopsis had me instantly running to the counter to purchase! I have always loved the whole mystery of vampire lore and my husbands' name is Bill...the fact that Sookie can read minds-but not vampires was another interesting element to the story. It's not Anne Rice. It's not complicated and isn't stuffy. It's a great fun read and like nothing I had read before, so I really hoped for a sequel. I've obviously been out of the loop, since #2's been out for a while! I will be sure to get it!
